Handy Hints

I adore the handy hint section in all of those down-at-heel ladies magazines. Of course I only read them at work and in the doctor's waiting room...but as they give me so much unintended pleasure, I am contemplating subscribing to the likes of "take a break" to make sure I have my fix so to speak.
My very favourite handy hint comes from Viz which offers the following:-
Keep you loved ones alive...when you lose an elderly relative, always keep their false teeth.....when washed they make ideal pastry cutters!
Dog food ambrosia
I do have a useful handy hint of my own..and it's a little advice about keeping your animals ticking over when the elements are against you.
Always make sure that you give your girls some protein occasionally. The cheapest way is to buy some of those dreadful smelling bargain basement cans of dog food from the supermarkets that cater for the more budget clientele .
THEY GO ABSOLUTELY friggin nuts over it.

  1. Rather have dog food than use false teeth for pastry cutters...

  2. It might make our bird feeder a bit mushy...

  3. Goosy goes nuts for tinned beef and will fight the dogs for a share. It is so funny to watch a goose beat off two hungry dogs!

  6. ha! I asked my mother for my father's false teeth after he passed away - she thought I was crazy. I wasn't going to use them for anything, just store them in remembrance.

  10. I'd forgotten about Viz! Is it still going? I'm not sure what happened to my granddad's false teeth but it looks like I missed a trick there.

Got round to watching the chauffeur episode of Borgen yesterday.....I think that might be rearing its ugly head again in a future episode! If I see the word Borgen in any of your future posts I'll know to look away quickly...

  11. oh dear, you've brought back terrible memories of guilt now ! when my dear Mother passed, well before she passed actually, she said I was to make sure she had her teeth in for burial - you guessed it - I forgot ! I was so upset/stressed with lots to sort out - I left them in a drawer. If you're reading this Mom - sorry ! perhaps you've got some new ones now ??

Moving swiftly on ........ when I had my hens I used to put fish meal in with their dried corn/wheat etc., you can get a 2 kg bag from the cheapo shops for £1.00 in the pets section (fishing bait)

  12. I like the good old fashioned cleaning tips.

The pies would look like they'd had a bite taken out of them!

  13. Oh, my...

Never thought of cheap dog food for the birds - I have some in the cabinet that the dogs turned down... will give it a try for the wild ones.

  14. I've handfed lots of orphaned baby birds (mostly songbirds) and moist puppy food is perfect for feeding them. Usually baby robins or sparrows can be fed bits of dog food on the end of a toothpick. They do quite well and thrive on it, so I'm sure it's a good nutritional boost for the chickens!

  15. That false teeth comment puts me in mind of Joe Orton keeping and using his deceased mum's set as a prop for his 'Loot' (I think). Not quite as disrespectful as he'd have liked, methinks.

  16. I'm glad you mentioned that you need to wash the choppers before you use them for pastry cutting. Still not appealing.

The crows have been coming to the bird feeder. I'm wondering if they remember how last winter, when it got so cold like now, that I had tossed a few dead mice out there? Phoebe's been hunting down cellar, but nowt yet. I'm glad of it personally and praise her for her sentry efforts at keeping our cellar and home safe and rodent-free.

  18. Thanks for the feeding tip, buddy! I've been wondering how I could add some protein to the wild turkeys diet! I'm just giving them cracked corn and stale bread crumbs. They forage during the day but I wonder how much protein they can find.

  19. Since I know nothing about chickens but the thing about cheep dog food is that what goes in the chickens comes out in the egg ? Or is this the lets keep the chicken alive through winter worry about eggs later ?
I know Weaver help the Hedgehogs through winter with some cat food she leaves out.

    cheers, parsnip

    1. A bit of extra protein will just keep the birds going in this bloody snow
There won't be a problem with the eggs
After all chickens are in fact omnivorous

  20. Top tips - for the tip minded. Love it. The best tip I ever saw in Take a break or the like, was from a woman in High Green. Don't throw out your old tights. Plait them and make lovely tie backs for your curtains. I bet they look fab! xxxxxx

  21. I haven't heard of Viz - but I have now. The tip surely came from the Steptoe & Son episode when Steptoe snr removes his teeth to make the marks around the edge of a pie crust...

I used to use blood and bone for my chooks. It's quite cheap for a bag. I mixed a generous scoop in with the cooked potato peelings and water while its still hot. I figured warm food means they had to use up less energy to bring it up to body temp.

You have to watch out the dogs don't get into the bag tho'.

  23. There are certainly plenty of takers for the dog food.

The wild birds are eating us out of house and home at the moment and there's not even any snow here.

  24. I find that my feathered girls John go absolutely raving made over anything which is not their normal everyday food - every time they see me emerge from the house they come running from all directions.
