A Very Danish Seduction

Norman Reedus in The Walking Dead
Well in the absence of redneck zombie killer Daryl Dixon and the other WALKING DEAD survivors of the undead apocalypse , I have been terribly in need for another group of interesting tv despots to hang my hat on so to speak.
Now this does not mean that I am being in anyway disloyal...no, not a bit of it.... But a girl needs to have an interest on these long, long nights of darkness and cold

BORGEN is that stopgap
for those that have not seen it. Borgen is a Danish version of The West Wing without the long corridors.
Instead of Martin Sheen and his Donny Osmond mouthed President , we have divorcing, mother of two Birgitte Christiansen as a feisty, black coated, and liberal as fuck coalition prime minister who is
not only a shit hot leader, she cleans her own house, works from home when the kids are ill! And shags her chauffeur when the need arises.
Yes , it's all very European.
Working alongside her delectable spin doctor, Kasper (Johan Philip Asbaek, below) Birgitte ducks and dives all manner of political shenanigans whilst under the watchful gaze of reporter Katrine Fansmark (Birgitte Sorensen) and the scene stealing alcoholic Hanne ( Benedikte Hansen , below) and throughout series 1 and 2 the story lines ( as they have a want to do) zig zag between political intrigue and the personal relationships of the main characters.
It's all very adult,
It's all very interesting
And it's all very entertaining
Oh, and there's not a bloody zombie in sight.

  1. Have you ever watched Breaking Bad? 5 seasons — that'd keep you busy!

    1. Never heard about it. Hannah but the synopsis on Wikipedia looks interesting if not a little bleak

    2. I only recently discovered it, and have had a solid diet of it via Netflix streaming - up through season 4. I'm trying to find season 5 free online, then when it starts up again in July I'll be ready. It's very dark, John, but oh, so entertaining! After all, you watch zombies, so drugs and murder shouldn't stop you! :)

  2. I'm awaiting the next Game of Thrones (so I can lust over Kit Harington and pray for a shot of Jason Momoa as Khal Drogo) meanwhile I'm surviving on Supernatural and Criminal Minds. I'm about to hit up Spartacus Vengence too, but that's ENTIRELY for the history, you understand, and NOTHING to do with the sweaty, mostly naked homoerotic subtext. Nope, not at all. My TV is sadly not high brow, and mostly guided by hot boys.

    1. I liked the first Spartacus
Such a shame any Whitfield died
Btw he was born only 40 miles or so from us here

  4. Jenny suggested to me that the poster in Katrine's flat about Woodward and Bernstein might be a trailer for something later in the series - Hanne and Katrine doing some Woodward and Bernstein thing of their own perhaps. They're certainly getting pretty feisty with their boss.

  6. My hubby watches sports and realty shows and other than The Good Wife and the very funny Modern Family, I watch British TV. That is about as European as we get here.

  10. This probably wouldn't 'go over' in North America because it deals with real everyday things along with man's weaknesses. A little too realistic for the general masses here I'm afraid. It'll take some time......

  12. I had been looking forward to the BBC's new production of 'Blandings'. What a terrible let-down. A good cast; but totally mis-cast. Blandings must have been moved to Essex.

  13. Yes,Borgan is fascinating on all sorts of levels.Unlike Anglo-Saxon politicians, these Danes appear to have an inner emotional landscape.[I write this comment with the UK House of Commons Live on telly.......I see no emotions there!]

  15. Sounds like a good one. I shall look out for it. I am very much enjoying the new Revenge season. It is so bad it is good. Lots of people dying and a central female character that is pretty fab. It did have a cute labrador dog too but it died end of last season. Thanks for the TV tip.

  18. After reading all the comments, I'm now drooling at the thought of new shows to look for. Wish I had a cable lineup that included BBC - you have some darn good TV shows! I'm a scifi fan who never watched Doctor Who until a couple of months ago - found it on Netflix and have become hooked. Even watched many of the classics, but prefer the new ones. I'm also on my second tour of Torchwood. Love your version of Being Human over our copycat US version, but it is also good. And, of course, I'm fascinated by Downton Abbey. Back to the US - I also live and breathe Supernatural (those boys are HOT)!! Sorry - rambling.

  19. I am obsessed with The Walking Dead! I don't know how I've made it these past few weeks while it's been on break. It's coming back on the weekend before my birthday, so I consider it a great birthday gift :)

  20. I just finished Season 3 of Boardwalk Empire. Very, very violent but enthralling. Steve Buscemi was terribly good. My favourite character? - Richard Harrow - a sweet, sensitive killing machine.

Breaking Bad was very good also.

Oh well and this comment was made in front of a bloody zombie audience. Yes sir, it was recorded live in front of a dead studio audience...

With that, I shall now go and watch Coronation Street....

  23. Hi Chris,
'The Walking Dead'??? Now wash your mouth out with soap. You will be telling us you read 'The Mirror' next. Being avid 'West Wing' fans, with the COMPLETE box set of dvds that we watch EVERY winter (and yes, CJ is sooo hot when she does The Jackal!), I think I may give 'Borgen' a try...it sounds pretty good, if a little Danish.

  24. Shagging the chauffeur??? Obviously BBC4 hasn't quite got there yet or I've been very unobservant.

  25. Yes John you spoilt it for me too, I haven't viewed that episode yet. Although she is a red blooded woman it would have happened sooner or later she just would have not had the time to date so when in Rome !!
Pleased to see I am in good company, so far all the series that I watch have been mentioned apart from Mad Men- the wire Blue bloods and back for series 2 Stella. What do you think of him then ? bit grubby greasy I thought, looks like a dirty boy (in the best way)OH thinks he is miscast though and doesn't like him at all.

Really enjoy reading your blog and so glad you posted this when you did. I've been off work sick for 3 days with a cold and have watched both seasons 1 and 2. It's brilliant and yes, the Danish do things well.
