  1. And I am glad you are in such high spirits even in the absence of Chris. Have a good night.

  2. Even though it's effectively round the corner, I've been a happy tv spectator. Helped by the wonderful service on the BBC website, because the downside of the Olympics happening in your timezone is that you're stuck at work when most of it is happening.

I won't even drag myself into town tomorrow for the men's marathon. The train I need to catch to get to the parts of the city with the best views (Guildhall, Leadenhall) don't run in a Sunday.

Yes, it felt like an imposition at times. Yes, it's going to cost us for years to come. But if Ray Davies sings Days at the closing ceremony, I'll be blubbing like I had a medal round my neck.

  3. I do think you do deserve to be proud. Although the ref for the women's soccer, Canada against the USA match, needn't be proud, as she did a terrible jobb!!!!

the olympics have always made me proud...and I have always supported it from the start...
it is a positive that we need to celebrate.... especially in this climate of depression and recession x

  5. Yes, you folks have done a marvelous job. I've watched damn near all of it on the telly except for water polo, team handball and soccer (sorry world, it bores me silly) and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. I also applaud NBC for showing ALL the sports cause I got to see lots of horse stuff, plus some things I'd never heard of (flat water canoeing, air rifle). It's been great!

  6. And it's been a real shot in the arm for Britain as a multicultural country, too, which is a Good Thing.

  7. Hmmmm!Water polo is a tactical and physically demanding sport that merits inclusion. Soccer/football, I have my doubts. I will make an independent post on 'Olympic Sports'!

  8. PS - what now happens to all the 'plastic Brits' like Porter, Hindes, Murray, etc? Do you put them back in a cupboard until next they are needed?

  9. As an American watching daily, I must say I'm very impressed by what your country has put on. Well done! Gold medal to those in charge!

  10. I've loved the Olympics too, and one of the things I really enjoyed was getting to know about Britain!

  11. Let me get this straight....you are PROUD!
And rightly so I might add! I enjoy the Olympics more when they are not in North America......always good to get a new perspective.

  12. I've enjoyed this year's summer Olympics more than any I've ever seen. I was able to be home and watch some sports during the day that you never see here in prime time TV. NBC has done a great job in covering all the games. I applaud all the athletes! I'm still upset that I missed the opening ceremony!!

  13. John, I agree with you 100%. Suddenly so many people are openly demonstrating their national pride. Councils have tried in the past to ban the flying of the Union Flag, but heaven help them if they ever try again. Even the French couldn't really find anything nasty to say about us... and that takes some doing!

  14. Absolutely, J.G.! Not only have these been the best Olympics ever, take it from me that won't ever be a better one! If I'm wrong, sue me! - though I may not be around for many more of them.

(altogether now)....."GOD SAVE OUR NOBLE QUEENS....

  15. You see, I'm so delirious myself, can't even get the words of our very own National Anthem right! ;-)

    sour grapes! sour grapes!

  17. Absolutely !!
I was fed up with so many things about Britain and not the slightest bit interested in sport but have found myself glued to the tv every night.
It has been the boost we needed in this country at just the right time. We'll still have far too many unemployed etc, etc, after all this is over but we'll have something very good to look back on and be proud of.

  18. Sour grapes? JohnG - no! Just disappointment!

  19. Wouldn't it be great if all celebs were treated with the same respect and courtesy (and even pride) as the participants in the Olympics?

  20. It certainly was a trouble-free and perfectly run Olympics.(well, it WAS held in Great Britain wasn't it?) I just watched the closing ceremony and the celebrations especially when Mo Farah stood on the podium. Have a great weekend, John. Greetings Jo

  21. Jo (above) must be a clairvoyant; the closing ceremony isn't until later tonight!

  22. Ive never had much interest in Sport, but after giving birth to a sports mad Son, Ive had to show some enthusiasm - and I have to say Ive loved it all (except for the football). We have had to watch most of it in a pub on holiday, which has been wonderful. Ive loved the whole flag waving year so far. x
