  5. Dogs ought to be compulsory for small boys, and anyone older than a small boy too.

  10. the family cannot have a dog, they all work long hours which is unfortunate....
perhaps its nicer just to visit dogs on holiday
they hold a mystique for the little one and he can enjoy them all the more

  11. Boys (and girls) need pets, we always had a dog when I was growing up, BUT we had a stay at home Mom too...

  13. Why not let him OFFICIALLY adopt one of yours. You could look after it for him, feed it, etc. And he could have a certificate saying that he is the owner!

I like the reason you give, John, for Leo's family not being able to have a dog. Too many people make that mistake resulting in a miserable animal.

When my son was about seven he too wanted a dog. Fine, no problem. Since I work from home there certainly wouldn't have been any issue over the dog being lonely. However, whilst I may be called a soft touch I am no fool. So I told the Angel that he can have any dog he likes providing he realizes that a dog needs to be walked (even in the rain, and in the early morning too). No, not me. Him. I also reminded him that what goes in will come out, and it is our civil duty to clean up poo after our dogs. That was it. All went quiet on the pet front. Though got some goldfish to fill the gap. Then he had his eureka: A cat. And a cat it was. Needing space and independence. Come and go as they please. Coming to you if they want to be stroked, leaving you, like Albert, sweet half dead tokens of their love at your feet. And doing 'their business' among my flower beds. Not a poop scoop in sight. Only me with a little shovel. Perfect.
