Bada- bing- bada boom!

"Our" dog breeder once gave me a bit of invaluable advice about the vagaries  of dog illnesses.
"Don't worry too much about your dog" she said brusquely "as long as it will eat a piece of toast!"
For some strange reason dogs seem to love toast.
In our house, given our more cosmopolitan tastes, the dogs will do ANYTHING for a quick bite of a bagel.
Now we don't do those awful "traditional New York"  bagels that come in a synthetic pack of 5....no sir---ee......we wouldn't wipe our bums on something as artificial as those.. no we, as a family are addicted to freshly baked bagels from Sainbury's bakery which are as traditionally tasting as ones we have eaten in the deli's of New York.
Mabel had a real talent when it came to eating bagels. Given the size of her chops, she could get a whole one into her mouth without watering an eyeball. The terriers are much more civilized in their eating habits and will line up rather politely at the breakfast table, ever hopeful for a the odd morsel
They don't get a lot though
Bagels are an impressively low 3 points of weightwatchers

Tonight we are off to Bangor
For those that don't know Bangor is North Wales' only University City.
and apart from being the academic centre of excellence, the place, in my humble opinion, is a shit hole.
With a non student population of a mere 13 thousand, Bangor is more like a parochial small town rather than a true multicultural city, but occasionally something of interest can rear it's head amid the handful of Welsh "Weatherspoon" pubs, Greg's the bakers and Blodwyn's Beauty Parlour
Tonight Bryn Terfel will be singing to mark the centenary of "PJ Hall" at the University and we have tickets!!!... which is a real treat.
Janet ( sister) has been conscripted for hen duty, so we have no need to rush back..... and may even have time to share a little pinot before driving home...... mind you where we are going to find a wine bar in Bangor  that does not cater for the Lambrini brigade?

  1. Have a wonderful night out.
Some cats are rather partial to toast as well. My father poked a hole in the flyscreen next to the breakfast table and each morning would feed fingers of toast (and vegemite) out to the cat who had just rushed outside to enjoy his second breakfast. I don't know whether my father or the cat were the most peculiar.

  4. When you think of it humans aren't designed to eat toast either.

  7. The French have yet to discover Bagels (they must be foreign!), so our lot will have to remain deprived.

  8. As you motor back from Bangor in your bouncy Berlingo, I imagine that you and Chris will both be singing, "Didn't we have a lovely time the day we went to Bangor?"

  10. I agree, John, once you have a bagel right from the fired ovens, you will never care for another store bought. Unfortunately those where left behind when we head up here further North out of the City.

  12. Lulu has never tried bagel, only because I never think to buy them. She does, however, adore Derbyshire oatcakes, warmed up and served with cheesy egg (scrambled egg with cream cheese melted into it). This is what she has for breakfast every morning. We have to make do with Shreddies !!

Enjoy your concert. Lambrini is better than nothing when you're desperate for a drink - maybe not !!

  13. We had a wonderful cocker spaniel, Meg, for many years. At the ripe old age of 14, at the mere whiff of freshly baking toast, was known to run up or down three flights of stairs!

  14. Oh......Bryn Terfel......oh would I ever love to see him in concert....one of the most incredible voices of all time... Enjoy!!!! Now I have to go and make some toast!!!!

  15. There. You've nailed it. I used to walk my Roxy a couple of times a week to the local bagel shop a couple of miles away.I haven't found a decent bagel in 2 1/2 years here in AZ.
High class pooches you have :-)

  16. Vagrancies? I think you mean vagaries, old bean.

I was last in Bangor in about 1973, and quite liked the place, but it sounds like it's gone horribly downhill since then. Bangor in Northern Ireland isn't very inspiring either, though it does have a rather lovely coastal walk along Belfast Lough.

  19. I'll never be able to eat another bagel without thinking of the image of you wiping your bum with it. I think the dogs like the bagels because they are so chewy.

  22. Enjoy your evening out!

My favorite bagel is encrusted with salt, toasted, buttered & not shared with my dogs. No sir, not a bite.

    Who am I kidding.... xo

  26. My spinone (Monty) gets worked up at the same time of night and rushes over to the grill barking for toast. He is obssessed with it and also very partial to a bagel. I am very envious of your tickets for Bryn Terfel. I hope you both have a great time. Lily. xxx

  27. So, I take it that handsome devil is Bryn Terfel (my, look at all the vowels in his name!)... I will have to check him out on YouTube -- need to expand my musical horizons. Those packaged bagels are disgusting; they're not even bagels really. Have a grand time in Bangor (well, enjoy Bryn Terfel and hope you find a drink).

  28. By the time you get this you'll be back from your night out...hope you both had a good time. My hubby used to eat a bagel every morning but burned himself out on them so I haven't seen one in the house for quite a while. Looking at this one in your photo makes me think it's time to head to the bakery! Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

  29. Toast! That explains it! My Dad was sort of the pied piper of dogs in my growing up neighborhood long after I'd grown up and gone. Down one street lived a pair of standard poodles. One or both would get out of their yard on occasion, find Dad at his house, and end up getting a treat of toast. It became a ritual - dogs would get out, run the neighborhood to my parents' house in time for breakfast, and get their toast. I always wondered what the attraction was!

  33. I like my bagels with peanut butter (crunchy of course!!) and an apple... cored, and sliced..... delicious!! Sounds like a good night out in Bangor.... and if you're REALLY stuck, I always find wetherspoons pubs to be great places to go "people watching"!

  34. I've been told that toast helps clean a dog's teeth and presumably, if it's burnt toast, the charcol will help cure farting.

I worked for a music company whose staff suggested that Bryn was a dead ringer for Desperate Dan!

  35. Ech, I did like a bagel mid-morning, but I now have this horrid image.
