  1. That cartoon takes me back too :-) To sneaky moments with mags that may have been my father's. Picture Post, Pix maybe, and an introduction to something I didn't quite understand.

  2. Well, that settles it then. I didn't know whether to describe myself as a geek or a nerd. Guess I'm a geek. (But I do NOT bite the heads off of chickens!)

I think I'm a "gerd" not quite geek and not quite nerd..somewhere in the middle.

  5. Hahahahhaa! I have just written a draft post on 'nerds' for my Monday blog... complete with a picture of Simon Pegg for this book (I love him and I LOVE Shaun of the Dead).

  9. did you know that the word Geek comes from English dialect geek, geck: fool, freak; from Low German geck, from Middle Low German. The root geck still survives in Dutch and Afrikaans gek: crazy, as well as some German dialects, and in the Alsatian word Gickeleshut: geek's hat, used in carnivals, whereas, A "Nerd" is a derogatory slang term for a person typically described as socially-impaired, obsessive, or overly intellectual. They may spend inordinate amounts of time on unpopular or obscure activities, pursuits, or interests, which are generally either highly technical, or relating to topics of fiction or fantasy, to the exclusion of more mainstream activities.

The first documented appearance of the word "nerd" is as the name of a creature in Dr. Seuss's book If I Ran the Zoo (1950), in which the narrator Gerald McGrew claims that he would collect "a Nerkle, a Nerd, and a Seersucker too" for his imaginary zoo.

  24. Yes John, being a geek must be wonderful. But if you have been brought up to mind your p's and q's it is very hard to get into total geek mode. I would love to be like that but struggle with things like 'what will folk think' - luckily my son is an absolute geek and I am so pleased.

  25. May I recommend visiting a professional counsellor in Wrexham? Ms Jenny Ta of Acacia Anenue, Wrexham, Wales FU2 1DK. You pay £30 an hour and lie on her couch while she sorts you out.

  26. I was never a geek or a nerd. I was a hippie.
