Coconut pieces?

Now first let me tell you that I am having a few computer problems, so for a while things may be a bit erratic from now on until Mr Computer Shop geek can sort it all out.... My second point is a bit of a question.... why would someone place a dozen or so small pieces of rock hard coconut shell ( no flesh) in an egg box on top of our kitchen wall?
Now I know we live in a small rural village, that could have been mistaken as the backdrop for the film The Wicker Man, but even I cannot quite work out the significance of this strange offering?
If anyone can work a plausible answer , please contact me
And thirdly, the out and out winners of a traditional Welsh Love Spoon are Kiwi "Lady Mondegreen over at
http://ladymondegreenssecretgarden.blogspot.com/ who got all of the questions right thanks to her quick witted daughter Bironey! and to "Dan" Congratulations to all three of you!
The answers ( if anyone is interested) are Brett Claywell ( Mr painfully Cute) A young Russell Crowe ,Downton Abbey's Dan Stevens, Norman Reedus from The Walking Dead,Lancastrian comic Jon Richardson, actor Jospeh Mawle, crooner and all round sex pot Matt Cardle, Miranda sit encom sweetie Tom Ellis, Reece Shearsmith from The League of Gentlemen and finally the delightfully cute Scott Evans
Shame on Prestatyn resident Gwyneth,( you know who you are), Aussie Carol and Gloria Abyss....who all cheated in order to retrieve the "right" answers!!!!.....disqualification is a nasty word eh?

  6. I've just Googled the significance and it turns out to be an old Mafia signal which means either 'he sleeps with the chickens' or 'the chickens sleep with the coconuts', depending on which part of Sicily you are in.

  9. Perhaps someone is donating an egg carton to you and put the coconut in it to weigh it down so it wouldn't blow away?

Or the coconut Fairy paid a visit...

  10. Coconuts always go to pieces in eggboxes, it's something to do with claustrophobia. Don't be shy, you'll have to shell out for a new one.

  11. I bought my aunt a Dyson, (sorry, I am ablog behind) she is 93. I figure the cost was worth it because I am the one who vacuums her floors. Sad how happy playing with that vacuum makes me. Very sad indeed.

And oh How I wish I were as nice as Joanne but I am not. The coconut pieces are a real death threat. I'll mail my rifle right over

  12. The coconut shell symbolises the human skull. The eggbox symbolises the home. The wall symbolises the barrier between good and evil. Put the three together and I am sorry to say that you are in receipt of an ominous homophobic warning - probably via Rhyl. Time to get rid of your cutesy lapdogs and get a frothing, red-eyed Alsatian guard dog called Satan.

  13. And I thought I lived in Deliverance-ville. That coconut-egg thing is creepy.

All those cutie-boys are too young for my tastes. If you post a bunch of old dudes, I'd know 'em.

  14. How did you KNOW that, Yorkshire Pudding? That's downright scary. Freaking weirdos in the world (not you, Yorkshire, the person who placed the box). I might be very careful, if I were you. Maybe let the coppers know. Get a doberman. Take karate. Invite your bloggy friends over to take a round out of him/her.

  16. It just occurred to me there's a double meaning to the phrase, the Traditional Welsh Love Spoon.

There's a very good cookbook called Spooning with Rosie, the title evidently got Harper Collins all in a spin.

  20. Them Welshies are tricksy. We stayed in a holiday cottage in Old Radnor - years ago - and every night someone tacked *another* dead mouse to the door post.
Though I expect all that kind of thing tailed of once they got broadband....

  23. Oh golly, thanks so much for picking ME (and Bryony) as your winner. What a treat. And for the mention, blush, blush. Now A, would you really want to deprive a lonely old widder woman of a bit of Loving?
Ha, the Wicker Man: twas the feature movie screened at our recent National gathering (after Tim Plester's much gentler 'Way of the Morris')
I think some poor addled egg-box carrying soul stopped to look at your poultry or your dogs or something, putting the box down for a mo, and then walked off without it (obviously).
Now, just when they wanted to get on with a bit of nice cosy button-or jewellry making they can't find their coconut shell that someone across the village had specially saved for them.
How about coconut shell love spoons?

  24. Totally unrelated to your post but I wanted to let you know that they just showed an episode of the "Two Fat Ladies" here in the States. The ladies were in Wales, right up/down the street from you and they cooked for a Welsh male choir. In the end they had a picnic overlooking what I think was Colwyn Bay. It looked beautiful, thought it was the Cote d'azur! You live in a really beautiful neck of the woods!

  25. PS Just seen Wanda's comment about Old Radnor. That's where my ancestor's come from!
While I was prowling around the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford during my UK trip last month, the voodoo item that filled me most with dread was an ox heart stuck with spines and it didn't come from foreign parts: it had been found inside a chimney in Somerset - where my more recent ancestors come from!

  29. At first I was inclined to think it was a warning for you not to tell about the argument the other morning, maybe signifying that's what your skull will end up like if you do.

But thinking about people's absentmindedness (well ok, mine), I think someone ate a coconut and put the shell in the egg box to take it out to the bin, then forgot they had done that, and the next time they looked at the box they thought "Oh I'll just give that egg box back to John" and didn't notice that there was something in it. Or another member of the family took the egg box back and just presumed the coconut shell was a gift for you!

Could it be a rodent that brought the coconut shells?

  33. Depends entirely on how hairy the coconut was.

  34. Following our visit to the Horniman Museum yesterday I have found the answer for you. There we saw a big ugly crab that only eats coconuts. So obviously one has visited you and tidied away after themselves

  37. I was thinking of the song, 'I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Cocoanuts' as i read this entry and the comments, until i got to Nota Bene's and then thought, 'Oh, dear, John's got crabs.'

Then the full import of that sentence struck, and i've been giggling. Sorry, John.

I do hope Mouse's explanation is correct.
