.....so said Sammy Davis Jnr.....
I have always thought that our cat , Albert is a spit for Sammy Davis Jnr.
Like the entertainer, he is a slight little chap with more chutzpah than you could shake a bagel at.
He is resolutely cheerful, has coped well with a disability ( he broke his leg badly when a kitten which has resulted in him having a faint limp which often resembles a bit of a swagger) and he is surrounded by his own canine " Rat pack" , who he clearly adores with a passion.
Can you see a resemblance? |
....he also has a heart as big as a lion, for as small as he is, he will take on all comers without pause or thought. When only out of kitten hood, I remember watching him fight with a rat, which was just a little bit bigger than he was and I only let George administer the final "coup de grace" when the rat looked as though he was just about the get the upper hand.
The dogs tolerate Albert., and are careful not to act too roughly with him as he is not adverse in giving them a bit of a pasting if the need arise. He is accepted but not embraced by them, a fact that does not bother him in the least , as he delights in welcoming each dog in turn with a face rub, when he returns to bed after a night's mouse killing.
Mabel wrong footed him only slightly this week, and after a momentary pause to work out that she wasn't in fact Constance resurrected, he gamely rubbed his chops against hers as she stood there, shaking like a bulldog shaped leaf
I don't think that she had ever "met" a cat before.....especially one that could easily belt out "The Rhythm of life"

Dogs give a home a heart.. I always feel
A cat makes a house a home

This is so funny! I think you should rename Albert to Sammy!
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping from across the pond that Mabel has found a new bestie for life. Aside from you of course.

I have to agree. They complement each other in a well balanced pack. Your dogs are great, but oh, that cat! He's wonderful.
ReplyDeleteLooks a lot like my old Nick except that he was a BIG cat.
ReplyDeleteAhhhh, but can he tap dance??? Fun post.
ReplyDeleteWell that's put a smile on my face!
ReplyDeleteNice post! I think Albert is a fine character in your lives! Even in still shots, I can see a swagger!
ReplyDeleteA bulldog shaped leaf - where do you come up with them? Definitely keep that one for the book.
ReplyDeleteWonderful story. :)
ReplyDeleteLovely pic. I went to see a Rat Pack tribute show in Las Vegas a couple of years ago and was slightly disappointed - they never created the characters of the great men.
ReplyDelete"Dogs give a home a heart.. I always feel
ReplyDeleteA cat makes a house a home"
I couldn't agree more, Oliver cat seconds that ;)
Albert looks like a sweet boy, what a pretty face he has !

spittin' image I'd say! handsome feline with his little white bib...and I love that he LOVES dogs
ReplyDeleteI am surprised that with your inability to turn down animals you only have one cat. They seem a constant stream in my life.
ReplyDeleteGreat post.
Very nice.
ReplyDeleteSo happy that Albert got some recognition! He is a character & a beautiful boy.
ReplyDeleteThat was a lovely post - well done Albert.
ReplyDeleteSo that is what's missing around here! Great post John and I love Albert....just the way a cat should be.
ReplyDeleteOh, oh, thank you so much for this whole post dedicated to Albert. He sounds a lot like Aelfy (who is bringing lizards indoors daily now that it is basking weather). He frightened my sister's dog under a chair t'other day. I hope he can reach this face rubbing arrangement with her in time. Lovely cameo of your cat - thanks again :-)
ReplyDeleteI love the way you write. All the animals take on people traits, and you show their heart and soul. Your posts are a treat to read.
ReplyDeleteWhile dogs feel at home in the house, cats make a home of the house. Big difference!
ReplyDeleteThe best Rat Pack film, which included the late, lamented Peter Falk, also with only one eye, was 'Robin and The Seven Hoods' a classic line of which was having asked how a recently disposed of competitor could be concealed in a foundation stone the answer was, 'Well, we had to fold him a bit'.
Must admit that I am not a cat lover. They know this and slither around my legs and leap into my lap with abandon just to creep me out.
ReplyDeleteCats are smarter than I am and at least I have the grace to admit it.
I knew it wouldn't be long before you did a loving post on Albert. *smile*
ReplyDeleteAnd now I'm smitten with Albert, too.
ReplyDelete"Dogs give a home a heart.. I always feel a cat makes a house a home"
This is so lyrical John. Really beautiful.
And...Mabel? Clearly something has happened since I was here last...
Hilarious! I laughed out loud at the term 'pasting'. Cats can also maketh the home one giant fecking kitty litter.
ReplyDeleteThat was a lovely post about a very special cat!
ReplyDeleteYou need to blog about your cat more!!! I love the mental image I got of a shaking Mabel...
ReplyDeleteWritten your limerick yet? ;) Pear Tree is giving you a run for your money!
My cat Maxine looks exactly like Albert, right down to their white white-spotted chests!
ReplyDeleteWhat, just one cat? Maybe that is just how Albert wants it!
ReplyDeleteCats not only make the house a home - they own it too.
ReplyDeleteClearly not a cat to be trifled with, he can hold his own against all comers, even with a limp. Some of the cats round here are total wimps, anything remotely scary and they run like the wind.
ReplyDeleteNice to know more about the four-footed furry creature who has gotten passing mention in prior posts. I have found your last two lines quite true.
ReplyDeleteSame ears. Different tie
ReplyDeleteGrace, my much beloved feral cat, was one-eyed. Not much of a jumper, given that she had no depth perception, but an excellent huntress nonetheless.
ReplyDeleteBefore she was full grown, she killed a large, grey squirrel and displayed him in the guest bedroom. As with all of her displays, only one small spot of blood.
She was tuxedo model, and i'm not sure of her religious background.
She was shy, so didn't swagger like your Albert, but did befriend two boxers (dogs not prizefighters) who lived for a time in the farmhouse on the corner of our former lodgings.
Albert is such a handsome fellow, and i'm glad he still tries to win over your MIL! I do hope Mabel can come to appreciate just how wonderful he is.

To quote you "Beautifully written." I do love an update on Albert, so I thank you!
