Yes.. there is absolutely no indication that either film is in Fact French and subtitled!
Clever marketing by the Americans no doubt as subtitled films in the US never EVER do very well at the box office.( did you notice that the only word uttered was "Amelie"?)
This "subtitle snobbery" is rife in this country too..even down to the renting of dvds at our local video shop.....as the few "foreign" movies for rent ( always on the bottom shelf) have huge red stickers on them "warning" the poor unfortunate shopper that they are not in English! (and should therefore be avoided!)

The sellers of pirate DVDs and whatnot on sale in the streets of Costa Rica and Nicaragua make it plain when something is available with English subtitles, or Spanish ones, or whatever it is their customer is seeking.
ReplyDeleteIt might mean them borrowing a pair of glasses from the vendor of same on the next street corner, but they'll check it thoroughly before you buy it.

I can't speak much French but I adore French films and have absolutely no trouble in reading the subtitles and watching the flick.

Saw 'Swimming Pool' Dir. Francois Ozon the other day on dvd. I can't imagine a film like this would get past the first pitch in tinseltown.
Two of my favorite films! Anyone who passes them up is missing out on some very delightful hours of bliss.

ReplyDeleteThink yourself lucky - the Germans dub every film made into their own language. A lot worse than American voice-overs on trailers, vous ne pensez pas?

ReplyDeleteWe have a video store in town that stocks a lot of different titles, and they have a Foreign section. The only requirement for that section is that the film is in something other than English.
One time at my old location, i rented a movie with DH. We didn't realize it was in French, and somehow the subtitles were switched off. After several minutes of viewing he asked if we couldn't please try to find a way to turn on the subtitles so he could understand what was going on. I understand French and hadn't noticed their absence. That's when i knew he had risen above that "subtitle snobbery," and was glad of it.

I hate that! Movies with subtitles are so much better than when they're dubbed. Or worse, remade into English-language films.
