I worked last night, and just about kept going until ten minutes ago, when the lure of coffee in a sunny window, won me over. I don't feel too guilty for sitting down....despite being watched from the sofa by two sets of interested eyes , willing me to take them out for another walk
Although I am not a churchgoer I am always happy to help out with Church activities and I remembered that I promised to take all of the Church tinned goods that were donated at the harvest festival down to the homeless shelter in Rhyl today. The weather has been terrible, wintery, windy and very wet this morning, and the down at heel part of Rhyl where the shelter is located couldn't have looked any more depressing.
The staff were friendly when I turned up and ever so grateful for the donation
which they said was one of the most generous in the district. Funny that the church here in Trelawnyd is one of the smallest in the diocese.
When I got back to Trelawnyd, I delivered some eggs and briefly got sidetracked by Auntie Glad who had left her usual "obtuse- I have something for you" message on our answerphone. I called around to collect a batch of scones ( for some reason she hates stating on the answerphone that she has actually made me some scones, preferring to say that she had "an item" that needed to be collected!)
I took the scones, and went to clean the Church as the weather improved a little.
With the sun streaming through the stained windows, it's a lovely place to relax in, so before I got stuck in with the hoover I sat on a pew and chomped my way through the bag of scones.
I don't think anyone would have minded.....
......I didn't leave any crumbs.............................................................
That's a beautiful church. Can't beat the little oldie ones. And hey, you cleaned up after yourself.
ReplyDeleteThat shot of the church interior is so beautiful...I love the light.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful place to sit and eat a bag of scones! Or perhaps to lie down on a pew and take a nap...
ReplyDeleteYou are such a community minded person! That church is positively gorgeous and you shot it just right.
ReplyDeletePS The dogs are adorable.
What a beautiful setting to just sit a moment and reflect.

ReplyDeleteI clean the church..I dont go to chruch
x
That is really beautiful...
ReplyDeleteSimply beautiful church. I wish I had an Aunt Gladys.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a rebellious pre-teen we would sit in the back of the balcony of our church and eat candy. We were considered 'bad' but if I had cleaned the church I would have considered myself deserving.
ReplyDeleteA modern version of Bread of Heaven!

The dogs look like toys. Like Pear Tree Log, I too wish I had an Aunty Glad
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! So peaceful. xo
ReplyDeleteI would love to attend a church that looks like that. It's beautiful, but simple and humble at the same time. Huge high-dollar sprawling edifices strike me as being more monuments to man's "greatness" than houses of worship.
ReplyDeleteTrue story: When we visited my mother-in-law last year, I helped her clean her church. It totally cracked me up to catch her filling the "holy water" receptacles right out of the tap.
John I'm 100% sure that no-one would have minded you enjoying Auntie Glad's delicious scones. She's a real little treasure that one. Wasn't that good to have all that tinned food to donate to Rhyl's homeless.
ReplyDeleteI think your version of 'not going to church' John is much more what God had in mind anyway.
ReplyDeleteMy neighbours sent me over dinner last night (hubby is away for the week)...Laurie is sort of my version of Aunty Gladys.
I'm with Jacqueline on this one, John. x
ReplyDeleteAh, scones! Is there anything better than homebaked scones? I agree with Jaquelene too, your church activities are about caring for people. And scones are a just reward for a job well done, I think.
ReplyDeletegood on you for cleaning the church despite not going to church. Loved the shot of the dogs, with their look of hoping a walk will be in order at some point.
ReplyDeleteGill in Canada
What an adorable photo of the dogs, they do look like toys!
ReplyDeleteDid you eat the whole bag of scones to yourself?
John, your posts always make me homesick for a place I have never been. Thank you for pics of a place so lovely and for reminding me that people ( you and your community) are still good and kind.
ReplyDeleteXO Linda
I hope Pew didn't mind you sitting on him to eat your scones.
ReplyDeleteThose little dogs are adorable.
ReplyDeleteI had a lovely Welsh Aunty Glad too. She used to let us pick a pickled onion out of the jar with our fingers LOL
The church is really pretty! Auntie Glad spoils you, Lucky you! :O). Someday I may have to see about a Teddy Bear doggy. They are the darn cutest things, and they don't even have smushed in faces LOL.
ReplyDeleteMaybe, John, you do 'go to church' since you sit and reflect, think, ponder etc. That's what you do when you go to church in't it?
ReplyDeleteEven if you are in your pinny whilst your doing it.
Love your dogs little scarf.
Chris it'!s her harness!
ReplyDeleteHa, looks like a scarf. I need my eyesight checking out.
ReplyDeleteThe pair of them are so perfect I wondered if they were toys at first!
I can't think of a better place to enjoy the goodness that is an English scone. And no dogs begging for your scraps.
ReplyDeleteWell, in future if anyone tells me they have an item to be collected, I shall be very very interested and my tastebuds will be quivering in anticipation....

ReplyDeleteit is a trait of welsh terriers
they sit and watch!
Wonderful post. Your dogs look like big stuffed teddies on the couch.
ReplyDeleteI am not surprised your small church makes the biggest donation. So many of the bigger churches have forgotten what they are for.
And a pretty church it is.
Honestly, at first I thought it was a photo of two stuffed bears. Adorable. Sitting and watching indeed! Munching down scones in a quiet church sounds like a wonderful meditation...and good for the soul.
ReplyDeleteThankyou for the photo of your church. I always notice it when it's in the background of your other photos. I can't help thinking that I could do with you here. There're dead flies everywere!
ReplyDeleteWe have a working bee this coming Saturday and one of our old ladies boils the kettle on a pew, lays out her delicious baking on another, then calls us to morning tea and we all sit around making crumbs to sweep up with the dead flies.
Your Welsh terriers are almost winning me over! If I ever decide to own a dog...
You're a wonder...always busy, caring sharing working! The church definitely has a beautiful simplicity, lovely photo. I love Aunty Glad and the way she asks you to pick up your scones...my great aunts and older friends I've had would do that same "obtuse" thing...had to love them though!!! I applaud you for hauling the canned goods to their destination in Rhyls on such a dreary day...well done "thou good and faithful servant".
ReplyDeleteThey're lovely, John, no question.
ReplyDeleteBut those two staring at me would freak me out. Almost like they're trying a bit of 'mind control'...
...wrrrwrwrrwrwrwrwrrw 'OPEN THE TREAT CUPBOARD DAD, OPEN THE CUPBOARDDDDDD'
If it is cold and wintery then those needy would ideed be in need of your gifts!
ReplyDeleteThe church is a deligt - I really wish we had more aged structures like that here in Australia. Our early churches and chapels sem to have been designed on a fairly common model. The best I've seen is a fairly "new" chapel at St Joseph's College, Hunters Hill. I would love to see it when full of boys and the college choir in full vice!
Lovely! Aunt Glad scones and a beautiful wee church. When my lady makes scones they are like rocks. Tee hee.
ReplyDeleteI like your new lightbox gizmo, or have I just not noticed it before?
ReplyDeleteI can't think of a better spot to enjoy your scones (do you say 'scons' or 'scowns'?) with lashings of butter I hope.
And a cup of strong tea?
Looks like the perfect place to have a perfect scone!
ReplyDeleteThe church is lovely.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice lady.
What a beautiful church ....a perfect place for a quiet breakfast.
ReplyDeleteThe dogs really do look like toys.
And, you ate the scones BEFORE you hoovered, so you could clean up any errant crumbs.
ReplyDeleteI wish i could hug your dogs, they look so cuddly.
My late grandmother never liked leaving messages on my answering machine; i wonder if Auntie Glad feels the same way. How lovely of her to make you some scones.
And good on you, Johnthedogs, helping out in the church, transporting the goods to Rhyl.
megan
OMgosh, the Welshies look soooo sweet there together on the couch. Who is it with the darker tan fur? Booth Hootie and BabyRocketDog had dark tan fur, but it has faded like your pooch on the right. Do you strip them?? I just can't do that to mine. It seems so cruel pulling their hairs out like that!!
ReplyDeleteI grew up Catholic, and am now devoid of religion, but I still love churches, especially beautiful old ones like yours! And I'm a sucker for incense and stained glass and candlelight.
