"Funny" animal videos often leave me just that little bit cold...
this short one I did find somewhat amusing
last night I witnessed something that was not quite as "fluffy bunny" as this video
A youngish crow sneaked underneath one of the hens' arks and was busy stealing some corn when two hybrids cornered him. Within seconds several more hens had joined in the attack and amid a flurry of pecks the crow tried hard to retaliate. The fight proceeded outside where within seconds the hens had mortally wounded the crow and literally one minute after it all started the crow was left gasping its last on its back and the hens continued with their foraging.

Gosh, that was short!
ReplyDeleteThat was pretty good. But I think I'm the only person in the world who didn't like "Inception". I know, I know...
ReplyDeleteThey are surprised, especially the kitten in the beginning of the clip. Have a great weekend, John. Greetings from Jo, Kenya
ReplyDeleteThere's definitely a darker side to chooks.
ReplyDeleteI once tried to intervene (too late unfortunately) whilst a gang of hens in a neighbour's pen pecked another hen literally to death, seemingly for no reason at all. Appalling.
Still, as scarecrow's go, that's not a bad deterrent.
Yes Craig, I agree - Inception was shit!
You know I always cheer for the underdog so at this moment, first thing in the morning, I'm feeling a little sorry for the crow....
ReplyDeleteRed in tooth and claw. And beaks.
ReplyDeleteChickens were velociraptors in a previous life.
ReplyDeleteThat was a very cute video! We had a crow steal one of our little peeps about a month ago. Mister saw him flying off with the chick but there was no way we could catch the blighter! =(
ReplyDeleteHeard the term "A Murder of Crows", but never it that context1
ReplyDeletevery early here John...when I read your post, my sleepy brain read 'cow' for 'crow'...made for an interesting few minutes as I visualized those killer hens going after a heifer!
ReplyDeleteI think I need another sip of coffee!
So there's a new title for your comic book series - "Revenge of the Killer Hens". I hope you have plucked the crow ready to make a delicious crow stew.
ReplyDeleteI have a whole new perception of chickens/hens. I am contemplating vegetarianism!!!
ReplyDeleteI guess that's where the "Bloody Hens!" came from....
ReplyDeleteIf I remember correctly Dad use to "debeak" his chickens (which is really just removing a tiny portion of the upper beak) to prevent them from cannabalizing each other. Chickens are nasty pieces of work.
ReplyDeleteLoved the video. I wonder what they know that we don't?
I'm with Kim. Gads, I'm a little sick to my stomach.
ReplyDeleteInception . . . I've seen that look on patients' faces before - usually when I'm getting ready to start an IV or put a catheter in [right?] Thanks a lot John, now I'm going to remember this video and struggle not to laugh.
ReplyDelete[I am feeling sorry for the crow though]
That is amazing John - I have never heard of it before but I know that hens can be cruel. One of mine is being bullied at the moment and spends her nights in the nest box because the others wont let her on the roosting perch.
ReplyDeleteits a first for me weaver
ReplyDeleteI have often seen them stalk and kill mice and voles and peck at other birds, but I have never seen such a sustained and violent attack on a larger bird before
Don't mess with the hybrids!!! Eeek!

ReplyDeleteI was waiting for a message at the end of the video, but ....nothing. Kind of creepy.
ReplyDeleteThe crow did what was natural to him, hunt for food and the hens did what was natural to them-keep what they have (handed down from somebody) and not share. It is kind of the story of what goes on so much in the human world, isn't it.
Your hens aren't exactly cuddly critters, are they? They must be some pretty tough birds to take on a crow and win.
ReplyDeleteI don't feel so guilty for eating chicken anymore...
ReplyDeleteJesus... and I used to think I wanted chickens. Didn't know they were such murderous critters.
ReplyDeleteNot sure about the vid, but I think your hens were getting their own back! Our flock is constantly being stressed by the presence of crows and would probably love the opportunity to get their own back!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the short & sweet video. By the way, I don't know how you cope with those heartless, vigilante chickens and the other murderous wildlife.
ReplyDeleteThose eyes!!! Chickens can be mean...especially when it comes to sharing food but GEEEZ! I agree with Chris...they do have a dark side. And I'm with Kim...I feel a bit bad for the crow as he didn't stand much of a chance. Oh well...that's life on 'farm'.
ReplyDeleteWell. And I thought the idea of being savaged by several house dogs and a very pissed off and hypertensive gay queen with murderous intent was terrifying.
ReplyDelete(Did those animals in the video just hear about the fate of your crow? Maybe?)
Seriously though John, your girls have had their food regularly stolen by rooks, seagulls, and family members of the dead guy, been harassed, intimidated, and brutalized by foxes and badgers, and even had one of their sisters eaten by a pig. For godsakes, these girls don't have a dark side...they're just fed up. They can't take it anymore. I can totally relate. You go girls! Just beak the bastards and maybe that'll teach 'em some respect.
Dxxx :-)
