Texan politeness and 21's injection

Now I am not really a fan of "tv research"
Generally there are more holes in it than a slice of Swiss Cheese, and for the most part it is designed to be somewhat overly dramatic rather than intellectually rigorous .
Always a case of styleover substance
The general premise of this video centres around an actress/waitress being "homophobic" to a gay parenting family at a Texan cafe and the subsequent intervention by the general public when they challenge the waitress' rudeness.
As you may have expected, ( well I did), the rural community seems to be able to challenge the waitress' behaviour much more vociferously than the reported " city" diners did and although the video does flag wave the anti homophobic reaction amongst the Texan population, my thoughts on the matter centre around the fact that Southern people just do not tolerate rudeness in whatever form it is given.
Anyhow stick with the video!, and whatever you think of the diner's motivations, it does indeed capture that nice part of human nature
(look out for the letter that one young man presented to the lesbian couple....it's very moving)

21 had her second antibiotic injection this morning, which was an interesting experience to say the least. Jabbing a squirming piglet up the arse is a two man job and with Chris being away for the week, I was left lacking manpower, so eventually I had to conscript the help of  neighbour Pat, who fortunately,  is an old hand at piglet wrestling,
The second injection was therefore given right on time, and the little sow is looking just that little bit better this morning and has been able to put her sore leg down onto the ground for the first time

Thank goodness for good neighbours
and thank goodness for kind Texans

  2. You've done it again - master of the one-liners that you are. "Jabbing a squirming piglet up the arse" is an image that will stay with me for the rest of the day.

I'll look at the video tonight, as I have a feeling that it will put me in the wrong head-space for the rest of the day, but it (subject matter of title) sort of relates to that email I sent you...

  5. Thanks for posting that video John... I found it quite moving. A bit disturbing when they switched from women to men and less people spoke up. But for rural Texas, I was surprised and encouraged by the reaction. Glad to hear of 21's improvement.

  6. Glad to hear 21 is getting better!

Funny (in a sad way) that no one in New York would speak up. :/

  7. Glad 21 in on the mend.

I am pleased to hear something positive about the States. In my experience, the southern states, in general, are more hospitable and believe in standing up for the rights of all humans.

One common statement is, I may not believe in what you say(believe) but I will defend to the death your right to say (believe) it.

There are many labels and many misconceptions with those labels. For instance, I am from Arkansas so therefore, I am an ignorant, inbred hillbilly.

I, too, would come to the aid of any one being treated unfairly...have done so in the past and will continue.

I was very impressed with the video and was very pleased that, this time, the South did win.

  8. I love this show. Many times I am disappointed with people's non-reaction to a scene that is definitely wrong, but those few people with courage who stand up and speak out against an injustice are heroes. I am sure many more want to be, but because of fear or not to call attention to themselves, sit quietly by.

  9. 21 look so sad. Me want to hug pig! :(

Thanks for the video. Very heartwarming. It's been going around quite a lot lately but always a pleasure to watch again.
Yet, I wouldn't walk on the street of any city holding the hand of my boyfriend unless I'm sure that we're not going to be harrased. Even today, one cannot be sure of being "rescued" by passerbys, and there are still too many event of people being beaten.
In other word, the video doesn't make me feel safer in this world!
    Hugs
    Jon

  14. 21 is adorable! As I am reading the post before heading off to the office I could not watch the video but get the drift. I would not tolerate any rudeness either in any form or to anyone. I can (and have been) quite outspoken. It's the Jersey Girl in me. xo

  15. Very refreshing to see people stick their heads above the parapet like that - on the whole sadly missing from our own society these days.

We both know, John, that you will NEVER be able to send that little pig off to the bacon factory...

  19. Not surprised that in the Texas scenario there were more stronger feelings (pro and con) expressed. Where an issue is contentious it generates strong feelings. Consider the reactions in the more 'liberal' state where comments such as "It's none of our business!" occurred - 'More liberal' often means that even 'hate mongers' are given a voice as being 'more liberal' can be an excuse to accept anything.

  23. Damn my slow internet. It has taken me half an hour to watch the ABC vid but, having seen it in bits for quite a while now, I have some conclusions ...

That I felt completely manipulated by their editing and filming (or I would have if my brain had not been removed by decades of American television).

That American waitresses are probably seen as the lowest of the low anyway and the most susceptible social demographic next to AfroAmericans garbos or Latino cleaners, fair game for this kind of entertainment, because people are quite happy to put a stroppy waitress in her place. Try a drunk Facebook CEO next time.

That Donovan must have made the producers cream in their pants. Spot on Donovan. (He WAS very cool).

That there is some good manners in there but good people would reject that kind of behaviour anywhere.

  24. Wow, John, this video makes me proud to call myself a Texan! I would be one of those people who would most definitely intercede any kind of prejudice in public. Thanks for posting it!
