Palm Sunday and Queen Latifah

Service in the sun
The small congregation of the St Michael's stood outside in the graveyard next to the 14th Century Church Cross for Palm Sunday service.
Although I am not a Church goer, I stood and watched the service for a while in the bright and warm sunshine, and did so with a great deal of affection.
Now where does that come from?
Chris is third from the right
I am working tonight, so this morning I have tried to take advantage of the springlike day but real life gets in the way, as it has a want to do, and much of the morning has been taken over with the arrival of a new charity case,
The phone went early and yes it was another plea to help out a fellow poultry keeper.
This time the problem was a very loud buff orpington who thinks she is a cockerel
(not good for a semi detached garden in suburbia)
Described as a "big bugger with a large gob" Queen Latifah is a handsome and rather vociferous girl indeed, and on reflection I would have been a fool to refuse her admission to the field population....
so here she stays........
Queen Latifah!

  8. Nice to make your acquaintance QL!

John, maybe it was the fact that the service was outside and not in a confined space.

  9. I heard that Buff Orps layed Jumbo eggs. Hubby may want some because of that.
I'm leaning more towards a mix of heritage chickens like Buckeyes, though I think I want some Marans, too.

She is a gorgeous hen though, John.

As for the affection, it might have been pride of heritage, or some such.
Happy Sunday to you, John. Hope work is easy on you tonight.

  11. I have to admit, there was no way I could pass up your blog post today with the title "Palm Sunday and Queen Latifah" Only you John... ;-)

QL is a beauty. I have two buff Orpingtons and they are my very best layers. Nice, big, golden brown eggs. In fact, I like my Orps so well, that I hatched out an egg that one of the girls (bred to my Blue-laced-red Wyandotte) laid and have my very first "Blue-laced-buff Orpingdotte"! I did a post about her on my chicken blog last night...

  12. Remember Chicken George? I think it's time for you to get a van - perhaps sprayed cerise with "Chicken John" written boldly on the side. You should also have a flashing light on top so that when retrieving chickens in need you could race unhindered through the Welsh countryside.

  13. Is the grass long or is she very low slung?

  14. I'm sorry, John, but that's not a BUFF Orpington. Buff is a golden color. Unless you're meaning "buff" as in "well-muscled."

  15. I think all of your fellow poultry keepers should devise some way of reaching you when they're desperate other than by the boring old phone. Like the Bat Signal. But with a chicken. :)

  16. Adore Queen Latifah, especially her skirt. Wish you lived near enough to introduce her to my orange Buff Orpington cockerel - can you imagine what the babies would be like?

  19. I often watch people, and sometimes I get a surge of warmth in my heart for them, even if they are strangers. I don't know where that comes from either!

Our new chickens are buff orpingtons, but are goldy coloured, and loud, the hen especially. The cockerel had a cold when he arrived so could only do creaky crows, but he is finding his voice now and is starting to sing well. They are grand birds to have around, and I hope Queen L gets along very well with your crew.

  20. Queen Latifa is a beauty. I love Easter time. I went to a C of E school and it was a big time for us. My childhood village looks like it could have inspired the hymn "There is a green hill far away without a city wall" and I really believed that some bugger from the village had hung Jesus in the olden days. I also believed for a long time that Pontious Pilot actually flew the plane and I always visualised him with a white shirt with shoulder stripes. Black and White telly and no DVD's fired my imagination!! xxxxx

  23. They'll be changing your name to John the hens. Or John the chooks. My neighbour has four or five black orps in her very mixed bag of a flock (geese, ducks, bantams, hens of all varieties.) They are big handsome birds.

You're a dab hand with names. Queen Latifah indeed.

  30. My experience with orpingtons has been great! My Buff Orpington rooster is a real beauty, but sadly I've lost all my buff girls to a Bobcat that has been prowling around for the last few months. I've had to pen up my chickens behind 6 foot high fencing in a rather large chicken yard, but it's not the same as letting them free range my whole 10 acres. I have tried repeatedly the shot the Bobcat, but he is a wily creature and still lives as of now. BUT,, his day will come and then I can let my birds out again!

  31. And my buffs were great layers of medium to large size light to medium brown eggs. Good mothers too! They do go broody very well so if you need to hatch any eggs from a non-broody hen, try putting them under your orpington! She's beautiful!

  32. No messing around with her!
