Picture Independence Day......add a slice of Black Hawk Down......throw in the obligatory tough Hispanic female marine (Michelle Rodriguez playing .....well......Michelle Rodriguez) and sprinkle the whole lot of CGI with a liberal amount of shite dialogue...and bingo...you have ....Battle: Los Angeles.
Now I sort of enjoyed the action sequences.....I sort of think that most of the movie resembled one of those computer games that I know nothing about...but boy when the movie slows down to let beefcake Sergeant Aaron Eckhart build his bromance relationship with his multicultural and mistrusting marine group....Chris was reaching for his sick bag!....and I was cringing in disappointment
John Wayne.....where were you when we needed you?
6/10 (visually 8/10)
(ps best line of any action movie......as the marines crowd around a dying alien in an effort to find its weaknesses..... the lone civilian woman in the group pipes up "Maybe I can help. I'm a veterinarian"
........beat that
You are a very generous critic! But then again I haven't seen it.
ReplyDeleteI can't comment, I am laughing too hard!
ReplyDeleteCan't win them all!
ReplyDeleteAbout your to die for comment on my blog: You ain't seen nothing yet! That was our front yard -- the desert hills around here will soon burst into bloom and for a few short weeks will put on quite a show.--Inger
Roger Ebert gave it 1/2 star out of 5 I believe, too much gratuitous Violence.

ReplyDeleteI forgave the violence
( it wasnt that bad) I just cant forgive awful dialogue
I am making a wild guess you aren't the demographic they are looking for. Male yes. Over testosteron-ized, 18-24, heavy video gamer... Maybe not so much? This stuff is more mind candy for the "Let's blow stuff up" crowd.

My 25 year old son and his gamer crowd aren't planning to see this movie in the theater, they say they'll rent it on DVD for their once-a-week Bad Movie Night.
ReplyDeleteGotta have a tough Hispanic female Marine...at least since "Aliens".
ReplyDeleteI went to see it because I was guest reviewing it over on someone elses podcast. I was surprised that I actually really enjoyed it. Yes it was cheesy and silly, but for what it was it was fun.
ReplyDeleteThis movie is aimed at 14 year old boys, who will absolutely love it. And as I never really developed past my own teenage tastes I liked it too :)
Roger Ebert did give it a shocking panning - but I think he was very unfair, and not considering who the movie was aimed at (not him).
7.5/10 for me!
I agree. A typical kick-ass flick where true American grit prevailes and defeats the badass aliens - yet again!! (yawn).
ReplyDeleteI reckon they make these feel good, 'triumphant in the face of overwhelming odds' movies, year in year out to make up for being such f**k ups in real world conflicts.
My Gawd that looks dreadful. I think you were quite generous! Give me solid characters and a good plot over action any day of the week!
