The Last Ghost Hen,Youtube, and A Chillout Sunday

Ruth, the last of the Ghost hens
One of the last ghost hens died this morning.Nearly a year since they first arrived.
Now only one of the fat, physically challenged old girls remain on the field. and despite probably having a heart not unlike an average obese beer swilling chav, she looks in remarkably good health.
I shall miss having these birds around the field when she finally succumbs to multi organ failure.
Their valiant battle with enforced in breeding has given them a semblance of a normal "green" life......indeed the final girl (who I have named Ruth) Laid a perfect small egg today...it is a nice reminder that she is in fact acting like a proper hen.
Her star shining brightly just before it fades.............

Last night we chilled out with a kind of "you tube" night.
Now this is a bit of an indulgence as it comprises of us all choosing our own favourite you tube clips in turn.....a bit of a nostalgic wander down memory lane....and an occasional boring one for the other "watchers" if you pick something a little off the wall!
Here is one of Nigel's favourite choices.....what ever happened to Kathy Kirby? answers on a postcard

Chris (his sun hat) and Nige

The rest of today has seen us lazily mooching around the cottage.
We braved the chickens and had a peasant and pleasant lunch  in the sun on the field......
Later , when it's cool I will plant my potatoes out, tidy up the cottage which resembles a bomb site and perhaps catch up with some blogs.........

ps a new arrival is being delivered to the field tomorrow , his name is Russell

  1. It will seem odd not having the Ghost hens on topic.... I hope Ruth lasts a good while yet. An egg! How about that? Good for her!

Of course you know by now that I am on dial-up, so I don't get around much. Was thrilled that I got all your pictures to come up from your hike! Beautiful!

Hanging around today, myself, I cannot start the rider so I can move it to get the push mower, so shall call in a service and to h___ with it. NOT my problem!

    Have a great evening!

  2. Kathy Kirby! I haven't thought about her for ages. I wouldn't have given her one even when I was 12.

  3. I have one old "mutt" hen that is one-quarter meat bird. One of my 4-H kids turned his project birds loose after the county fair (on his goat farm). They crossed with his other chickens. Even a quarter blood makes her a huge, slow bird that eats a lot and lays relatively small eggs. But she's an old sweetie and pretty hardy and it's fun to have her waddling around.

Well bravo to Ruth...and an egg too!

Sounds interesting to do a YouTube entertainment! Now I'm going to have to look up Kathy Kirby to find out who she is!

    Enjoy your chill out Sunday!

  6. so Even Ruth had her swansong

White chicken, who living had no egg,
when Death approached, unlocked her silent vent .
Leaning her breast against the grassy hill,
thus laid her first and last, and laid no more:
"Farewell, all joys! O Death, come close mine eyes!
"More Geese than ghosts now live, more Fools than Wise."

  8. That's sad that a chicken died today. I guess they don't live that long especially if you 'rescued' them from a bad situation.
Intriguing....I wonder what will be arriving soon.

  12. Well done Cathy! And well done Ruth. I hope she lives a long time yet and doesn't have to farewell all joys for a long time yet.

And when it comes to food peasant is best. Those tomatoes look very delicious. Home grown, I hope!

  14. It's a shame you're down to only one Ghost Hen John but you've done very well to have kept them alive this long. Ruth's wattles and comb look so bright and healthy and look at that...she laid an egg! Congrats! Looks like you and the guys had a nice weekend and you even had good weather to boot...good for you. Hmmm I'll be watching to see who and what Russell is! Have a great week...

  15. The sound of Kathy Kirby took me back to Sunday's when I was a kid. We listened to Billy Cotton's Band Show and Two Way Family Favourites on the radio (which was actually in the TV).

  16. I think it's great you gave those ghost hens a good year! Hopefully the last valiant hen will surprise you by living longer than you expect. :)

    Looking forward to Russell!

  17. "a heart not unlike an average obese beer swilling chav"

Just about fell off my chair laughing at that!!

As for the ghost hen, I'm sure she lived out her last days in happiness at the love and care you provided her :)

  18. Sorry to hear about your hen, I found my recently departed hen's part burnt head in one of the dog's mouth yesterday so much for asking the OH to sort out disposal ! :-(
    Sigh .....

And so, down to one. Ruth. I like that name as I had an aunt Ruth once who looked...surprisingly enough...a lot like your hen. Doughy white and overweight but so very sweet and gentle.
Oh John. I feel a little more emotional than I'd like to admit as the ghost hens have always held a tender place in my heart. Kind of like vulnerable, clumsy, and slow yet oh-so-endearing side characters that you fall in love with in a really, great book. Who would have dreamed that one would still be alive this far out? (And laying eggs no less!) You've done such a kind thing with them.
And that picture...you're all wearing short sleeves already!!? How is that possible when you're at a higher latitude than I am?
    Dxxx
