An overheard gem

Last night I went to see a pretty average Iranian Movie entitled The Hunter at Theatre Clwyd....it was an so so movie and an average night.. but the whole evening was elevated by a chance moment
As I was looking at the art exhibition in the long gallery, I could just about make out singing coming from the studio theatre....I stopped by the studio door and realised that they were in full rehearsal for the forthcoming production of Guys And Dolls!
In the more or less deserted theatre ( there was only two people in audience for the movie) I stopped and listened to a cracking rendition of "sit down you're rocking the boat" it was lovely too......I absolutely love a show stopper!

  2. Hmmm.... Now I'm gonna have to go and rent Guys and Dolls. It is one musical I've never seen, nor played. So glad you got such an unexpected treat!

  6. Oh, I love Guys and dolls...well, I love all musicals really! I remember Shirely Jones, Barbara Streisand, all those leading ladies in such great productions. They certainly don't make moveis like they use to, do they?

  7. I'm a sucker for musicals.
John, have you seen "Black Swan"? I saw my first movie in years, ("The King's Speech") and I enjoyed it so much, I'm ready for more!

  8. Ahhhh! Stubby Kaye with his butterball frame kept his real name a secret for his entire career. He was born Bernard Katzin. He created the role of Nicely-Nicely Johnson in "Guys and Dolls" singing that rousing show-stopper "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat"!

Thanks for that lovely memory recall!

  9. I've always been a fan of musicals. When I was a kid, still at home in PA, we'd go to NYC at least once a year to see something on (or off) Broadway. I guess I wanted life to be like a musical, and when things didn't work out that way was sooooo disappointed. Ahhh well. Look forward to hearing about your local production!

  13. We staged this when i was in high school. The boy who played Nicely-Nicely Johnson was Paul B, who had a wonderful bass voice at 14. He drowned out a chorus of 200 singing that, and it was indeed a show stopper!

I was surprised at how many of the words i remember to that song (i was stage crew and became a de facto prompter).
