Blog Reality

Dan at (http://allthatcomeswithit.com/)
This afternoon fellow blogger Dan drove over from West Yorkshire to collect a handful of the runner ducks as a present for his kids. He is the first person from the strange world of blogland that I have actually met, and I must admit it felt just a little weird actually meeting someone whose words you have read over months and months of perusing the more interesting of online diaries.

Blogging has all of the benefits of reading a good book. Your imagination takes flight and all of those connecting "holes" in the narrative are filled with your own creativity and invention, so the reality of meeting a blog character, could well be a bit of a challenge to one's mental image of that person and indeed to the reality of the place they choose to show you through blog photographs and imagery.

I have mental images of.most of the  blog writers I have chosen to follow, even though I already know what some of them look like.
Maura,Kim and Dia in my mind, all have a look and the warmth of someone like actress Emma Thompson; whereas someone like  Tom leaves me with an impression that he is a kind of impish Nigel Havers......Jim, I am sure resembles everyones' favourite uncle and Tracey MUST have a bit of a young Joan Rivers about her......sigh, I could go on and on ........suffice to say that Dan, well just was  like I thought he would be, affable and down to earth.

Anyhow the rest of the short and cold day, I have been catching up with coop cleaning and field tidying. The fox is back as the the remains of the young cockerel that survived the snow last week was dotted near to the turkey enclosure. He must have been late back to roost on Saturday when I was away! I couldn't find him on Sunday when I returned!...turn your back for one minute and ALWAYS something happens eh?....I told you that he was on borrowed time

  1. The runner ducks are gone... do you miss them? I imagine that meeting a blogger would be quite interesting! I have pictures in my mind, as to whom I am writing, but they all seem to be like my oldest sons etc. So many mushy hearts. :-)

Too bad about the cockerel, but, sometimes you gotta be the bear and sometimes the honey......

    Have a good afternoon!

  5. Poor little cockerel, well it was probably inevitable...

If you were to come to my house you would be greeted by me holding spray bottle (full of water), air horn and tennis racquet.... my four dogs would greet you very raucously, and jump up and down all over you and I would be fending them off with my aforementioned "weapons" all the while looking like.... Julia Roberts..... tee hee hee xoxo

Now, from what you tell me, we snuggle under the same eiderdown so where's THAT conversation going to lead!!

  7. Aww John..you made me cry when you compared me and Kim and Dia to Emma Thompson. I have always loved her in anything I've ever seen her in...especially in Last Chance Harvey. Anyway...thanks for the kind comparison X That's too bad about your young cockerel...we had a young beautiful Leghorn cockerel who just wouldn't stay in the chicken area and our big Shep got him (and it happened while we were away in Canada) Oh well..that's life on a farm. That's nice that you got to meet Dan..I hope his children love their present. I hope you're having a good day! Maura :)

  8. Sorry to hear about the cockerel, but as you say, it was inevitable.

    The circle of life continues.

Have a good rest of the week and stay warm!

  9. I'm sorry that young bird didn't make it. Foxie had a nice meal though. When are you going to get your GOAT! After reading all about ME how could you possibly resist getting a fluffy, snuggley Boer doe? Tee hee. xxxxx ooooo

  10. Interesting that you got to meet somebody from blogland! It's easy to open up to a world of strangers, but meeting somebody face to face is always more challenging. But we all feel the same way. Believe me, I had to think forever before I even added my photo to your list of followers. I made sure that it wasn't a closeup. Didn't want the world to see my imperfections. On second thought - what am I talking about? I don't have any imperfections. At least not in blogland. Hehe!

  11. Thanks...good description, except I have wrinkles. What comes out of our mouths is so similar though! xxx

  12. oh, I'm so sad for that cockerel, he was a bit of a survivor wasn't he? but nothing foxes foxy for long.
So, you had a pixie hat did you? bet you looked cute in it. lol

  13. I've always loved Runner Ducks, they are so comical, I'm sure the children will enjoy them.
Wouldn't it be grand if we could have one BIG blog party, and meet our followers in person, I'll be working on that one.
I see the snow has been putting extra chores on you, especially keeping the water bowls filled, I 'spect we love it's magic only from the inside of the window pane.
Poor cockerel, and so it goes....
    Stay snug !

  14. Those Runner Ducks would make me a nervous wreck! I'm sure the quail were feeling a bit nervous with Albert sizing them up.

  15. There is a saying - "Never meet your heroes". Should it be extended to "Never meet a blogger" too? :)

As I said to you today - I've met quite a few bloggers over the past year or so. Some of them met my expectations, some exceeded them, and some were very nice people - but there was a lack of chemistry between us.

Anyhow, you are one of the bloggers I've really enjoyed meeting and it was very exciting to see Boris, Constance, and "the field" in the flesh. It felt like meeting celebrities!

Thanks again for the ducks. I could hardly hear the radio on the drive back for all the quacking.

As soon as my wife saw them she said "OK, I'm won over" although I'd forgotten I hadn't told her I was getting four rather than three.

They are now happily throwing themselves against the walls of their new home (or at least are doing every time I open the door anyhow).

The kids have named them: Splash, Dash, Mouse, and Scaredy Saxo. I fully expect the names to change at least 12 times before they finally stick.

  16. Thank-you for the kind compliment John...I also have this image in my mind of bloggers and someday I hope to be able to meet a few of them. I’ll probably never get to meet you and will just have to be content with the image in my mind of you as a debonair blend of Cary Grant, Rupert Everett, and James Herriot all rolled into one!! :-)

  17. Oh, and maybe a little Joan Crawford too John! :-)))

  18. I wouldn't mind meeting your fowl before they all get munched by a fox, John. (Nigel Havers indeed... mutter, mutter...)

  19. I guess the fox thinks its got a right to live as well and probably has a den of young'uns it wants to feed?

  21. I also wonder what they would sound like in the real world......

I agree too bad about the cockerel.

  22. Over from Dan's blog, and I must say this post is really insightful. Well done! Glad to have found your blog.

Also, in case you were wondering, I'm often referred to as someone with the looks of a Victoria's Secret model, the wit of Tina Fey, and the brains of a prominent neurosurgeon. Now if you ever read my blog, you'll have an accurate mental sketch of me.

I know!! I remember the first time I heard you talking in one of your videos I was so surprised. I didn't even know that I'd filled in an imaginary voice for you in my head until I heard your real one and discovered it was different! Strange how our minds do that, isn't it? I suspect that's why it's so hard to make a movie out of a widely read and beloved book.
Can you imagine meeting someone online and falling in love without ever seeing or hearing them? How in the world does a romance like that EVER survive a meeting in real life?!
I LOVE Dan's description of the ducks:
"They are now happily throwing themselves against the walls of their new home..." These runners have to be the strangest little birds I've ever heard about!
    Dia
p.s. You remind me of this guy named John Gray in my head...maybe you've met him? He's a fabulous Welsch chap who's into animals, home life, nursing, neighbors, writing, Life's little moments, and some wicked funny humor. :-)
