The girls have started to bang out the eggs now that the days are longer and somewhat warmer. Yesterday I collected two dozen from 30 laying hens, so I have had a small surfeit to sort out.
So the incubator is back in use on the kitchen top. In three weeks a motley group of chicks will hopefully be hatched, and the circle of life will continue quite wonderfully.
Of the original 12 laying hens I bought four years ago, seven old girls remain under the watchful eye of the geriatric Stanley. they are still laying eggs, which I guess is a sign of them being happy contented hens, here's hoping the new chicks will be healthy, happy and ALL FEMALE.....yeah right!
If only ....
ReplyDeleteOur eggs started hatching last night. There were three chicks this morning, two black australorps and a RI Red roo/black sex link hen mixed. I saw a couple of other eggs cracking, including a mixed bantam egg. Come on hens!!!

Fingers crossed for healthy little girly chicks.
ReplyDeleteI refer to mine (and the silkies) as boys in a kind of reverse psych/wishful thinking/backwards magic thing.
I'll let you know how it turns out.
Good luck little eggs xx
Ooooh, that must be so much fun to incubate eggs!! Since your girls are laying so many eggs, are you going to incubate more.....and more.....and more? Wishing every egg in the pic all turn out to be girls.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to seeing the circle of life continue as you become a proud Papa of all girls in 3 weeks!! :-)))
ReplyDeleteMay you have all girls that lay double yolkers! Hah!
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I will be incubating or not. One of the hens gets broody on occasion, and I usually end up with one or two(or more) that way. Now, if I don't have a bobcat considering my flock the local KFC, we will be fine...
Have a great one,
Cat
Sweet deal, I have two broody hens sitting nests. I can't wait to see what comes of them, its their first hatch.
ReplyDeleteI may just pull out my vintage incubator, which I found for a song on eBay last year.
