A Funeral day

The view from the Gop is quite beautiful in nice weather, and I took the dogs for their walk slightly earlier so that people attending Mrs Ellis' funeral could park in our driveway. I didn't know Mrs Ellis, but it was clear by the hundreds of people that crammed themselves in and around the Church that she was a popular and well loved woman.

I was thankful that the weather was good this morning, funerals are hard enough to deal with in sunny weather but seem a damm sight worse in rain. The cockerels called back and forth to each other as the funeral procession passed by, I hope people didn't mind too much.
I wrapped up some duck eggs and packaged some broad beans, and took them to Mrs Jones. I caught sight of her looking the mourners arriving at the church from her house on the main road and knew it would be another particularly hard day for her. I am glad I called in.

I am a firm advocate for organising your own funeral; as years go by, and the number of funerals that I attend increases, my resolve for doing so increases tenfold. I won't divulge my plans too much except to say that I would insist of the theme music from The Archers when the coffin is carried in........... not too tacky????

  1. Hey Frodo, is that a pic of the Shire? LOL It is beautiful scenery. My uncle's funeral was in May, and I am seriously considering my own funeral (though I"m only 33, you never know). It's quite funny that you did not know this woman, nor did you technically attend the funeral, but it has dominated your blog! I must say with your descriptions of all the surroundings, sounds like a place I wouldn't mind visiting someday. Have a great weekend!

  2. The Lady that was buried today was Pat from the village, she was one of the most friendliest straight talking women I have ever met. I beleive that some time or other she had minded most of the children in the village and supported the local school.

It seems apt that she had dominated your blog as she was well known throughout the village, hope you dont think i hijacked your blog. She was one nice lady.

  5. Not sure John, but she was always at the hall to support anything going on.

  6. "chicken boys" yes the photo IS the view across the valley from the Gop Hill, which is an ancient hill fort overlooking the village....
yes we have had two funerals at the church this week, I guess they do dominate my blog but as my field backs directly onto the graveyard...
By the way the original welsh name for our cottage is TAN Y Funwent which means UNDER THE GRAVEYARD!
