Whilst on our early morning walk Dorothy was set upon by a black staffie type off it’s lead.
She was still on hers, we had just gotten out of Bluebell.
The staffie circled once then clamped onto her throat before I could stamp on it
I stamped on it until it eventually let go
Mary biting at its arse in typical terrier style.
The dogs owner threatened to “fuck me over!”
I yelled back so loud that he sloped away very quickly his dog hanging from its collar.
The air was blue.
Dorothy was terribly shocked and bleeding and was shaking and whimpering long after I had cleaned and photographed her wound on the kitchen top.
She’s not long back from the vets and I’ve taken her to bed to rest under the duvet
I’ve informed the police
Poor baby. Why do people not keep their animals on leashes! Sending prayers for quick healing and hoping she recovers mentally too.

ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry for you both John-That is exactly what I fear each day-my thatch was attacked by a big dog whilst he was on his lead and at first the idiot owner apologized until next time I saw him and asked him to put his dog on a lead while we passed by-the bloke turned on me and refused-I told him "you need to keep your dog under control at all times-its the Law"arse ole said-"it is under control"he did grab its collar xx(the police hopefully should find him and insist he at least pays vet bills) xx

ReplyDeletePoor Dorothy! I'm glad you saved the day and that she's been to see the vet. Cheers for Mary's efforts to rescue Dorothy! Good, too, that you notified the police because the other dog is dangerous and its owner is irresponsible. That owner should pay your vet bill.

I have a dog that is also very fearful. Partly it's her size but also it seems to be something within her. All sorts of things spook her - loud noises, fireworks, lawn mowers, vaccuum cleaners, the slightest change of routine, car trips, other dogs (though she loves cats). My heart goes out to them - I can't imagine what it's like to live with that level of anxiety.
She was attacked a few years back by a large dog on the loose (as with Dottie, Sophie was leashed). When the dog owner eventually caught up, she said that my dog must have sent out strange signals as her dog had never done anything like that before. Of course, asking around I found out that was not true. I had picked up Sophie and tried to keep my back to the attacking dog, who was very strong and it bit my hand as it tried to drag Sophie from me. Sophie was screaming in terror. Again, the owner said I'd done the wrong thing to pick her up and that I should have left them to "sort it out themselves". Easy to say when your dog weighs close to 40 kg and mine a paltry 3½ kg!
Some people do not deserve to have a dog.

ReplyDeletePoor Dorothy - just as you were improving her confidence...well done for getting it off her, without getting bitten yourself. The same thing happened to us when we were out on a walk, that dog's owner wasn't surprised, and seemed to think it was rather funny. It was obvious the dog (a border terrier) was on a mission as soon as we spotted it. Why do these horrible people think it's acceptable to allow their dogs to run loose?
ReplyDeleteI've often said that you can judge an owner by his dog. If you've got an aggressive dog, you know the owner's an asshole too.
ReplyDeleteNot necessarily so. One of mine is not good with other dogs, but the rest are. She is just very reactive. However I keep her on a lead. Not much I can do if another dog runs up to her though, except try to put mys4lf between them. She's never hurt a dog though. I'd have paid the bill if she did.

DeletePoor Dorothy! I hope she's doing ok, and that the other dog owner is tracked down, fined, made to pay all vet bills, and barred from owning dogs. It will be a fight, as you know he'll lie and do everything he can to avoid being found responsible. I don't understand how people think being nearby with their dog off-leash is having them under control.
ReplyDeletePoor darling doggie. Why don't people keeps their dogs on leash. When I walk in parks with Bounce where the signs say Dogs On Leash I don't like when off leash dogs run up to us. Of course the owners always say their dogs are friendly. I do carry pepper spray attached to Bounce's leash.

This upset me so much.
While out with my two JRT's I saw an old lady and her Yorkie set upon by an Alsatian type dog. As I had a walking stick with me, I stuck it under the bigger dogs collar and twisted it. Eventually it let go of the Yorkie which was in a bit of a state. The owner of other dog was having a go at me about my stick!!
ReplyDeleteCut a long story short my two were stunned into good behavior - for once. Me and older lady hauled our dogs off to my car. I took her to the local vets, her pup was in a right mess. Fortunately it survived but was put of walking for ages.
The Alsatian and owner disappeared over the horizon of course.
The dog that attacked mine just ran at us for no reason -I was trying to protect my dog between my legs under my long winter coat trapped against a fence but the other dog just pushed past me-when the owner eventually appeared and I was on the floor protecting thatch and crying-I remember him saying"she can be a bit funny when she's on heat"-my thatch is a boy and also it sounds like it wasn't the first time x

ReplyDeleteIt brings back memories of when our Whippet was set upon by the farmer next-door's hulking Rottweiler x (Huntaway). My husband grabbed it by the collar and was strangling it when said farmer came out and just suggestedwe let the two of themfight it out. Yeah, sure, you help me bury mine afterwards then?
I had a fool of a neighbor suggest that for his dog and my cat, who was so would up after being charged by the dog I couldn't grab him.

Some dog owners are clueless when it comes to their own dog. Clearly, you and Dorothy met up with just that dog owner. Bad behavior from the dog and the owner. Let's plan for extra treats and hugs for Dorothy today!

ReplyDeleteGolly, you will ALL be traumatised by that. I hope Dot’s injuries heal cleanly and the experience hasn’t set her back too far. Perhaps carrying a deterrent, like pepper spray or the dog-equivalent, might be worth considering. We live in a suburb with lots of dogs and children and you never see a dog off leach, except at the designated areas… mind you, we’re a fairly posh area, and it wouldn’t be the case everywhere.

ReplyDeleteI hope you've been to the Police over this incident. Staffies, pit bulls, etc, are all very dangerous dogs, and should not be off a lead outdoors. That man must be prosecuted!

ReplyDeleteI am sorry to read that your sweet Dorothy had such a painful thing happen to her. It was a good thing you were able to get that dog off of her like you did without the dog latching onto you. Often those types of dogs will not release once they get something in their jaws.
ReplyDeleteMany years ago a Pitbull climbed (or was put) into our back yard while our big oversized Collie and Sheltie were out in our fenced back yard taking their morning constitutional. That lousy Pitbull horribly mangled and killed our poor 14 yr old Sheltie, and attacked our giant Collie, but didn't manage to kill him because of how huge, thick boned, and tall he was, and how thick and long his white neck ruff was. The Pitbull managed to bite the top of his head and damaged our Collie's ear and then the animal control and a police officer arrived.
They couldn't get the Pitbull off of our Collie and had to shoot the Pitbull dead.
Our Lance (Sir Lancelot) survived with several stitches in the top of his head and stitches to repair his ear. Lance was depressed about the death of his best friend Dandy the Sheltie, and I think getting hurt so bad by another dog. Sir Lancelot was never quite the same after going through all of that. The Collies that I have had in the past were very loving, sensitive dogs, like your Dorothy is.
