On Friday I collected prints and paintings bought a while ago before lockdown .
They have been framed and hung in the cottage alongside the drawing by Monika's daughter
The whole personality of the cottage has changed over the last two years
It's mine now
I took the opportunity to go shopping and went to Waterstones to look and smell the books.
And saw something I bought on impulse
Not a book,
Not stationary, pens or magazines
But a Chameleon
A cheefully stuffed chameleon with odd eyes
I'm fucking 58 !
He's now sat beneath my art wall,
swinging his leg at a Jaunty angle
And smiling his odd smile at the world
What's all this about?
I think it may be the many facets of You John that drew the 2 of you together x
ReplyDeleteIf it makes you happy that is all that matters.
ReplyDeleteI don't want to count all the stuffed animals I have from Japanese manga to Scotties ! I am so much older than you.
The first thing I bought after my divorce was a Japanese Kitchen God Statue. Worth every penny.
It's about whatever makes you smile, what amuses you. We are close in age, and I have a smiling Raggedy Ann doll for the same reasons. May we never stop being child-like like this. - Mary
ReplyDeleteHe pleased me
DeleteI love the Chameleon! If you saw it and liked it why the hell not and now in a perfect place.
ReplyDeleteHe's cute
ReplyDeleteNever too old for a cuddly toy. Heather
ReplyDeleteone of the design gurus over here said we all need to have some wimsy in our home...
ReplyDeleteA bit of whimsy never hurt anyone. p.s, my dogs would nick that off the radiator and its innards would be all over the floor!
ReplyDeleteWhy not?
ReplyDeleteit's your house and your art and your love of all things whimsy. I like the chameleon.
ReplyDeleteI love your new little family member♥♥
ReplyDeleteSlowly but surely shedding your old life and embracing the new. Chameleon-like donning a new suit, new colours, new art, new carefree you! I do hope so.
ReplyDeleteLX
Maybe he is a metaphor
DeleteThat could be exactly it, well spotted Lettice :-)
DeleteI look forward to seeing your art wall as it looks with the new additions! Love the jaunty chameleon, too! In our den, we have a jovial Kermit the frog and in my sewing room I have 3 Doozers (think Fraggle Rock). All are nod to the children within us. :)
ReplyDeleteHugs!
Babs I don't feel too self conscious now
DeleteWe're in good company!
DeleteI trust Maxim Dewitt is well out of dog or cat range!
If I don't show up here for a while, we'll have lost power as Isaias is headed sort of this way.
Hugs!
Love it!! Do you name your soft toys? You're loosening up and creating "your space" so of course there's a soft toy or two. I love your art.
ReplyDeleteHis name is maxim Dewitt
DeleteLove it. Think it is called connecting with your inner child and letting the inner child escape and play. Everybody needs to play. Does not matter about age = like time that is a man made thing. Whatever makes you happy it is all very subjective. Love it that you are letting go. Love the Chameleon and love his name. xx Pattypan x
ReplyDeleteMax de Witt! ..now you know where's he's from ?
DeleteAh, the gentle reassurance of a stuffed companion. Now perhaps a bowl of warm rice pudding with cinnamon sprinkled on top.
ReplyDeleteYou should name him Karma
ReplyDeleteGood idea
DeleteHa!!! Culture Club and Boy George would be so pleased to have been remembered. :)
DeleteThat name was my initial thought too - just for the RECORD, you might say.
Delete"I'm fucking 58!" made me laugh longer than I have in a while. Thanks, John!
ReplyDeleteIt shocks me everytime
DeleteIt's karma man! Karma, karma, karma, karma, karma chameleon
ReplyDeleteOh god

ReplyDeleteIt's because you're finally feeling comfortable in your skin, and in your place, enough to not overthink everything. It's because you're fucking 58, and you don't give a flying fuck what anyone thinks if you bring home a stuffed animal on a whim.
ReplyDeleteThe best answer of the night
Deleteyou are discovering aspect of yourself for the first time. and it's fun!
ReplyDeleteI guess u are right
DeleteIt means my dear you'll always be young at heart! We get a second childhood...mine has lasted 10 years so far.
ReplyDeleteYes !....It's about being free and independent with no criticism of anything you do...enjoy.😁💕
ReplyDeleteFreedom of expression!
ReplyDeleteI have a stuffed bear sitting on my dresser made by my clever younger sister from my older sisters pj's. It's a memory bear and we all have one. Nothing wrong with a stuffed animal if that's what you want. I love the expression on his face... and those eyes!
ReplyDeleteJo in Auckland
Love your new guy!! He is very unusual and charming! (as are you!)
ReplyDeleteIt's like peeing on a street lamp, your marking your territory and making it all yours. So other dogs can smell it too.
ReplyDeleteYou need to smile at him , he just makes you happy and happy is what you deserve.
Seems to me that this is about the real, complete, YOU being able to emerge. I do like that stuffed fellow; he has a smile that makes me smile :)
ReplyDeleteLike a chameleon you are changing into the person you were meant to be and that has enabled your home to become the "yours" that it is meant to be. He is perfect for you and your home!
ReplyDeleteI would have bought him too and I am quite a few years older than you.
ReplyDeleteIt's a cushion in disguise!
ReplyDeleteTrue dat
DeleteI have stuffed mice all over the place and a few stuffed rabbits, too, and I am 70!!
ReplyDeleteOh what fun. Shows your as mad as the rest of us.
ReplyDeleteWhatever makes you happy.
ReplyDeleteLovely chap. And maybe it's time to get some real life chickens, sheep, ducks, turkeys etcetera back into your life. The Ukrainian village restored?
ReplyDeleteI like the chameleon I think he has a jaunty attitude, and looks quite at home a happy nod to go along with the fresh look in your home and garden.
ReplyDeleteI would have had a hard time walking away. He's so cute.
ReplyDeleteHe is rather endearing is karma chameleon.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt the ‘trick cyclists’ would have a field day with the fact it is a chameleon and your current state of play. The rest of us will agree that it is a cute quirky addition to the jolly old homestead and will bring a smile to your face every time you look at it.xxx
ReplyDeleteYou're fucking 58, I'm fucking 59. You've just added a jolly and cuddly chameleon to your home, I've got a baby doll and two teddies I've had since I was a baby plus quite a collection of dolls I've collected these past few years ~ not to mention other bits 'n' bobs that might be considered childish or even odd by "proper" grown-ups ;) I say life's too short to "adult" all the fucking time ~ if it makes you happy, go for it
ReplyDeleteOoh I love the chameleon! x
ReplyDeleteWhat is it about? It's all about you becomng YOU John. Welcome to both you and your new friend.
ReplyDeleteHe's great. I'm not into soft toys but I have a large stuffed reindeer on my hearth. I'm 64 but in my defence I was only 62 when I bought him.
ReplyDeleteLove your chameleon. He reminds me of a baby parrot with those big eyes.
ReplyDeleteI think he's brilliant, it's that cheeky throw away look in his eye, that says 'take me or leave me, I am who I am'.
ReplyDeleteYou are bloody blossoming John and it's wonderful to watch after the shitfest of a year you had last year.
Maybe he's like some of your other "pets" over the years. You took one look and thought, "Well, it's all up to me. No one else is going to take THAT home."
ReplyDeleteDon't worry, John. I'm fucking 68 and have a garden full of flamingoes. Love Mitchell's comment. You take back your space, John - and isn't it a great feeling? xx
ReplyDeleteYour adorable chameleon is a magnet for smiles. We are never too old to want reasons for that.
ReplyDeleteIt's all about balance, John.
ReplyDeleteYou've started something now that you have admitted a fondness for soft toys... You will be getting all manner of weird and wonderful things sent to you... Would you like a Luna Lapin? (google it, if yes I will make one for you)
ReplyDeleteBut I'm not gone of them lol they irritate me generally
DeleteA representation of change
ReplyDeleteYou brought home a fantastic art piece. I’d have snapped it up in an instant.
ReplyDeleteMy husband gave me a fabulous hedgehog stuffed animal last year. We are who we become. I’m 73 and still evolving.
I don't know what it's about, but as I once owned 120 stuffed animal penguins and still have about 20-30, in addition to a wombat, dodo, kiwi, flamingo, and other exotics, and a husband who sleeps with large stuffed sheep, I can assure you it;'s nothing to worry about. Besides, the chameleon is cute!
ReplyDeleteIf we could post pictures in here, I would show you some of my menagerie of stuffed animals and I'm going to be 77 on the 21st! I have a big, fluffy dog that I got at Walmart a few years ago! A friend who designs and creates the cutest whimsical creatures has provided me with a delightful Wizard, his Elfin wife and her tiny elfin baby; a basket of cats; a bird in a hanging basket, a very whimsical and shaggy lion ... they are all items that I LIKE ... not because anyone else liked or agreed to them!
ReplyDeleteMy apartment ... my own personal collection of goofy things that PLEASE ME! OK .. I think you get the picture!
Sometimes, your inner adult has to step aside & allow the child that remains have a moment in the sun.
ReplyDeleteI have a collection of cuddly toys - many are of less usual creatures, such as sloths & anteaters, plus several lemurs. As to the chameleon - I'd call it Clem.
The Chameleon is a reflection of you. The many changes of you if you like, over recent months. That is the attraction.
ReplyDeleteI guess u could be right
DeleteYou are keeping yourself happy John by indulging your inner child every so often. Nothing wrong with that no matter how old we are. I’m jealous actually as now I bloody want one..
ReplyDeleteIt is all about “Living John” . . .
ReplyDeleteAnd rightfully so.
