Wet and dark and miserable.
18 th century cottages don't do well in such weather as their thick walls and small windows heighten the gloom, and so to keep your head above water, every lamp has to be switched on in every corner.
I've just been sitting at the kitchen table, deciding on what to do today.
I'm rapidly beginning to hate Saturdays .
For me, they are becoming somewhat lonely days.
Mind you a quick glance at the calendar hanging up by the door has perked the old tits up so to speak.
For on it, scribbled under today's date is the words Theatre lunch!
I'd forgotten but a couple of Samaritan chums and I had planned lunch out followed by an afternoon performance of the acclaimed Theatre Clwyd production of Lord Of The Flies.
What larks pip!
Ok , an all female version of flies won't be a bag of laughs but it will be stimulating and a respite from the miserable weather
I was just digging out my best Walking Dead T shirt to iron when my sister in law messaged me about an impromptu family meal planned for tonight. The meal is a belated celebration of my sister and brother in law's 50 th wedding anniversary
Gifts and cards for a 50 th wedding anniversary can look so old fashioned and frumpy and so not in keeping with my sister's personality so I've now decided on buying them bunches of sunflowers in celebration.
You can't get any more golden then a sunflower.
Hey ho
Glad you’ve got some plans. Gotta keep those tits perky. I hope you have a lovely day.
ReplyDeleteBest way, who wants a loads of 'golden'stuff to add to their 'silver'stuff from the 25th anniversary, which just collect dust.
ReplyDeleteYay, forgotten but happy plans to brighten your day and an unexpected invitation (bonus). Are you working tonight? Enjoy the outings!
ReplyDeleteI once had to drive to mid Wales from here. When I left it was a hot, sunny day so I wore a light shirt. By the time I got to Brecon I had the heater on in the car and it was pouring with rain. I stopped at a greasy-spoon and as I stood shivering and waiting for my breakfast, a local said, "Just come from England have you?"
ReplyDeleteAin't that the truth Tom. I used to spend my summer holidays in Betws-y-Coed with family and as soon as we spotted the "Welcome to Wales" sign the heavens opened. It was uncanny. I guess it's green for a reason isn't it.

DeleteMy parents, aunts and uncles had caravans on the North Wales coast so I spent a lot of time there as a child as did my own children. We visited Betws-y-Coed a lot and still do as my brother now lives in North Wales. It could be sunny beach weather on the coast but drizzly by the time we got to Betws. Still worth visiting though as it's a beautiful place.
DeleteMiserable weather always makes situations feel worse. Glad you have some plans for the day after all.
ReplyDeleteI too was sitting in my chair last night wondering how to get thru another weekend when a friend called wanting to go to a craft fair today and lunch and casino tomorrow. Something to look forward to....much brighter! You have a wonderful time.
ReplyDeleteEnvironmentalists say that we should conserve electricity. Switching on all the lights is rather naughty. It's nice to get out and do something on a miserable day.
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing naughty about lighting lamps to relieve the dreariness and retain sanity!
DeleteI beg to disagree madam. The Earth's resources are finite.
DeleteThink of the dreary days as an opportunity to put the lamps on, snuggle in and get cosy. Enjoy your outings, both lunch and an evening meal out, no cooking - bliss!
ReplyDeletePerfect gift for the “golden!”
ReplyDeleteSounds like the day is going to be better than expected!
Good news . . .
Wishing you a fabulous day xxxx Sophie.
ReplyDeleteHave a fun and distracting day. You are the sunshine of the day.
ReplyDeleteYour day sounds lovely. Sunflowers are a great gift.
ReplyDeleteHot and sunny here but Saturday just the same.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, it is wet, dark and miserable in Wales.....'every lamp has to be switched on','beginning to hate Saturdays','somewhat lonely days', 'won't be a bag of laughs','old-fashioned and frumpy'.....sheesh, cheer up Buddy, worse things happen at sea but the trick is to keep breathing and not allow the water to go over your head!Happy Saturday to ya.x
ReplyDeleteI think you're going to have a good Saturday after all.
ReplyDeleteYour day won't be too gloomy with those outings!
ReplyDeleteExcellent choice !! It will be all bright and happy and cheerful. Enjoy your day :)
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you'll have a better day despite the rain. All the best,John.
ReplyDeleteWith all your Samaritan and inpatient experience you probably don't need to be told that doing with your spare day may be a better way to cope with loneliness. I floundered with weekends a when I split up with an ex years ago; then I decided I was going to make them me days when I did things I loved, be it binge watching old films or series I loved or learning a new crafty skill. Thanks to that I ended up learning to make wine, soap, laundry liquid, crochet, chutneys and jams and then getting an allotment. At the end of my 'grieving period' I had a whole new bunch of hobbies, lovely friends and had come home to myself again. ((Hugs)) on a horrible wet weekend. xx
ReplyDelete"Come home to myself" - what a lovely expression, but oh so true!
DeleteI used to always feel that way on sundays. I met a friend where I worked and she always wanted to go out on Friday or Saturday night. I was not a bar kind of person but I would go now and then just to have something to do. But Sunday’s were long and lonely. So I would get myself dressed up and take myself shopping (looking mostly as I had no money to spare) or to a movie. It was the first time in my life I did anything by myself. Now I do it whenever I want. When the time is right, you WILL meet someone else, and you will be happy again. Maybe happier than ever. I am. It took time to heal though. Hugs
ReplyDeleteJohn, I think you might prefer the rain and gloom to the semi-blizzard going outside, it's 20F, and apparently going to snow all day. Winter has arrived to the Rocky Mtns. It'll be 4 wheel drive to the store today. My friend L. left yesterday after flying up from LA to see me through the left heart cath last week, and after she leaves I always feel a bit desolate. It passes, sometimes reluctantly. Cheers my friend.
ReplyDeleteMike
Colorado always seems like the barometer to indicate how soon winter is coming for the rest of us. As a NJ resident, I am displeased by this. Stay warm!
DeleteMissFifi
Unknown. I don't live in Colorado, that's the minor league rocky mtns state. I live in Montana.
DeleteTwo fun occasions today -- enjoy!
ReplyDeletea dreary lonely day has turned into a quite busy day with friends and family.
ReplyDeleteI've been using all of my parents silver stuff. It goes through the dishwasher and on to the table. I never made it to 25 and sometimes that gets me depressed...but then I look at the 3 spouses my ex has had since me and think of the lucky escape.
ReplyDeleteHow lovely to discover you had plans to meet a friend for lunch and a movie, then to get an unexpected invitation for dinner!!
ReplyDeleteYour idea to give sunflowers for the golden gift is inspired and will be beautiful.
Enjoy it all!
And keep a few of those sunflowers for yourself.
ReplyDeleteSunflowers will make a lovely present especially on wet dreary days. What a good idea!
ReplyDeleteMy 50th is a few months away and I think sunflowers would be perfect! Good choice!!
ReplyDeletePersonally I could see taking myself off to the pub and sitting in the snug with a glass of wine putting the world to rights. But then that's just me.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a nice day! Have fun and enjoy friends and family! If you have your health, you have everything!
ReplyDeleteFrom very wet South West Wales - reports are saying Wales has been hit by the worst flooding in 30 years! John is right - it is very, very wet - and we are used to rain! Fun things to do sound just the ticket!
ReplyDeleteAn all-female "Lord of the Flies"? Now THAT's a concept. Sorry it's rainy there -- somehow in London we've had a really nice day!
ReplyDeleteGlad you are having an unexpected busy day to brighten you up. The sunflowers are a great idea. I might just steal that idea for the next 50th we get invited to.
ReplyDeleteSunflowers sound like a wonderful gift. Gorgeous and nothing to store after they are gone but the beautiful memories.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your Saturday outings!
Sunflowers would brighten any day. Great idea! And for th cottage, too.
ReplyDeleteSaturdays are my worst days by far John - I think it is pretty normal. Dark dismal days don't do a lot to cheer one up either. I thought Rachel planned her Saturday very well indeed today if you read her blog today, and mine turned out well as I went into town with my son and his wife - but keep busy dear heart and I hope you enjoyed your day once it got going PS Sunflowers great idea!
ReplyDeleteMmmmmmm...I am beginning to forget what a weekend, let alone a Saturday, be these days of career change my friend. Perchance you need a hobby to ease the way to dotage my good man? ;-)
ReplyDeleteGlad you had something lined up to fill the void. Saturdays are usually a day of cleaning, grocery shopping, food making... I was just saying to my husband how boring we are, but I guess we have each other to be boring with. -Jenn
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of Sunflowers. Especially as we head into fall and turning the clock back. They are such a welcoming flower. Glad you had unexpected plans and hope you enjoyed them all!!
ReplyDeleteHope you had a good Saturday after all. And sunflowers make everything better, kind of the chocolate of the plant world:)
ReplyDeleteSounds like a lovely day John hope the rain lets up by tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteIt is rather soggy here too, which is quite exceptional. Normally the land and air are as dry as a bone.
ReplyDeleteFollowing my husband’s unexpected death I found weekends the most difficult. Even these many years later if I have a meloncoly day it’s usually on a weekend.
