Didn't that old Irish BBC broadcaster Terry Wogan used to say something similar on radio 2 in the mornings?
Anyhow, I have fed and watered the father-in-law, then taken him to the station in readiness for his long journey back to Kent, then I bought animal feed from the wholesalers, took Russell the gander to the vets with an inflamed knee, walked the dogs, and sorted the return of some of the Flower Show Cups in readiness for the show.
I still feel I am on catch up
I think this year will be my last Flower Show as Chairman. It saddens me that entries are dwindling somewhat, and I think I may be ultimaetly better served concentrating on entering my own exhibits rather than trying to cajole and " bully "others to enter theirs , trying to do both is sometimes a little too much, especially as I am organising the open allotment day single handedly
At the end of the day the whole experience has to be fun .
I will give the subject some thought

I did that an hour ago ... but then it started raining really heavily and my top of the list job could not be done .... so I put the kettle on again :-)

DeleteHate those "off days"....but with all those critters and fur babies I should think you get lots of unconditional love and affection, which always helps. Your concern and tenderness for the animals touches my heart.
ReplyDeleteI also understand the frustration in unsuccessful rounding up of others to do something they say they want to do....Some times it is just easier to do your own thing, unfortunately...

ReplyDeleteSome of us are born leaders and organizers, whether we want to be or not. Just ask yourself whether running the flower shows brings you more headaches or more joys, and you'll have your answer for next year. If it's no longer enjoyable for you, you're not gonna be as motivated to drum up enthusiasm for it in other people.

Our village has some great festivals and try to enlist new help every year.
ReplyDeleteIt's been my experience that it's good not to stay on too long. One becomes jaded and others feel intimidated at the prospect of taking over from someone who's been so successful. I hope you can find a replacement and then support that person to the hilt, which should regenerate the Show.

You should co-co! I had to take my Mother out for the day.....it'll take me all week to recover! Hope tomorrow's better for both of us (you and me, not me and my Mother). Taking a train across the Forth Rail Bridge tomorrow with my lovable and very loving Grandaughter - much more at my level!

ReplyDeleteBy today perhaps you are feeling differently, but I do believe you would not have written about it unless it had been crossing your mind more than a few times lately ... if the fun has left the room, it's time for a change. I did the same a few years ago with a ten-year volunteer position (should have been two years, but no one else would take over and the group ceased to exist), and it was definitely the right choice.
