Well said. I miss all those things on your "missing" list. I used to think that those white poodles that were popular in the 1960's did the white dog poo's xxxx
ReplyDeleteI nearly put poodles on the list!
DeleteNo shortage of housemartins here John - all our window sills (and our car) are covered in their s**t - now that the first batch of babies are flying the air is full of them. I love them.
ReplyDeleteAgree with the rest though. Having been to hospital to see the consultant about my ankle this week I was struck by the awful way people dress these days when attending a hospital appointment - flesh in huge quantities, bra straps, off the shoulder tatty T shirts, dresses more suitable for the beach - and (on the hot day) folk who were sitting in the sun waiting and therefore very sweaty when they went in. How do you nurses stand it?
PS The Queen still sports her headscarf though.
How do you nurses stand it?
DeleteWE HOLD OUR NOSES
Plenty of white dog poo in my yard due to Harriet's daily bone. Dries solid in the sun and explodes in a fine white asbestos like powder when hit with the lawn mower. Can I claim for poopestosis?
ReplyDeleteJan Yeppoon QLD
You have a good case
DeleteOh please do! I want to see how many more boxes I could tick LOL
ReplyDeleteSuch a brilliant post!
ReplyDeleteLLX
... common people ... Oh, the horror!
ReplyDeleteYes....bloody awful
DeleteNow I want to find a dirty postcard to send to you.......
ReplyDeleteOther things we don't see much of any more...school caps, catapults, aniseed balls, public conveniences (The Victorians would have been appalled)
ReplyDeleteThings we see too much of....mobility scooters, tattoos, MacDonalds litter, privet leaves, computer viruses and spam, The News (why are many of us so obsessed with it anyway?)
I always liked spam
DeleteEspecially with a nice bit of picalilly
I'll send you a box of wasps!
ReplyDeleteYou used to send boxes of white dog shit, I seem to remember.
DeleteOnly when he's had the wasps.
DeleteA lot of your 'don't see' list reminds me of my 1970's childhood. Some things are missing for obvious reasons-handwritten letters=computers
ReplyDeleteTypewriters=computers
Dens & little boy gangs=computers?
Dogs must not be fed bones anymore as my two poo white after a bone eating day. Don't miss wasps.
We call 4 x 4s ULVs - Unnecessarily Large Vehicles. ;-)
ReplyDeleteNow that you mention it... But the gangs of little boys hang on in my neck of the wood. Evocative list.
ReplyDeleteYou want wasps back? I've got 'em. How many do you want?
ReplyDeleteunfortunately, i have some bad tattoos.
ReplyDeleteOh dear.......posta photo of em
DeleteI read something on the BBC news app today about a priest getting killed on his way to midnight mass. No wonder you don't see them on the street anymore.
ReplyDeleteI grinned widely at wooden ball car seats.
Excellent list of observations - and you're quite right about all of them. I'd also add that we see far too many nail / manicure bars on the high street these days too.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea what you are talking about
DeleteTeehee
Great post. I miss old ladies with gumboots and aprons on.
ReplyDeleteGumboot!
DeleteNow there's a memory
landline phones
ReplyDeletedaily newspapers
streetcars
mom-and-pop stores (as opposed to big megachains)
sidewalks
I've noticed the same things...
ReplyDeleteToo much 'country'music!
ReplyDeleteJane x
Dearest sweetest Heart, I so agree with you. Particularly as I have never ever owned a brown suit in my life. Maybe now is the time. Where does one find white dog poo? I clearly never stood in any. If I had I'd remember.
ReplyDeleteModern parents? You mean those who keep yapping away into their assorted what's it phones instead of giving their kid some attention? Orphaned before death.
Am not inclined to sport a moustache - not even to please you, John. There are limits. However, will send you a clean handwritten postcard.
Don't make me nostalgic: Yes, what HAS happened to those tiny red critters on a stone in the afternoon sun?
U
Sending you some postcards for your viewing pleasure.
ReplyDeletePlease publish Gail's postcards John! I would add children dressed like adults to your list although it's not too bad in our village. Also, can I add Flashers to the things we don't see any more? They were EVERYWHERE in the 1970's. Not that I'm bemoaning that fact....just an observation obviously. x
ReplyDeleteThey are cracking em.... Will do
Delete'Common people' just common in the UK? None over here.....nothin common bout us!
ReplyDeleteI still send postcards and hand-written letters to my friends... provided they give me their mailing address!
ReplyDeleteI'm also starting to miss the old days... *sigh* I hated it so much when old folks always talked about the good old days (which were never good anyways; talk to my mom!) and now I'm one of them! *double-sigh*

ReplyDeleteRe where have all the wasps gone.
Gone to heaven
DeleteNope, they're here, John. I'd be happy to send some back to you, we've way too many here...
DeleteHappy Sunday to you, John. ♥
Gone to hell.

ReplyDeleteWe called those babushka's where I grew up. The headscarf. Later I learned it referred to the old woman, too. Generic old women or grandmothers.
ReplyDeleteI think the last time I saw a typewriter was in about 1997. No one used it. It gathered dust in an office, a relic of days past. I write personalized letters to some people.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
all the type writers reside in interior designed houses in the US if all the blogs are to be true. They put them on tables in halls and call them vignettes.

Oh dear, I must get rid of the old black 'Underwood' I have sitting on my hall table! I only keep it as a reminder of my secretarial past, nothing remotely interior-designed about my house!!
DeleteImpetigo. Ringworm. Rickets. Aah....happy days....
ReplyDelete.....consumption......and flea bites too
DeleteMonths and months of fresh air and good food in The Sanatorium? Can you imagine that happening today - you'd be hurtling down the Liverpool Pathway before the ink was dry on your first sputum test...
DeleteI was never a
DeleteOver of the pathway.. Though it had its uses
Looking after a dying patient is common sense
John in all seriousness, I found out this evening that my dear friend's sister had TB and it was either that or pneumonia that killed her 4 weeks ago aged 63.
DeleteTV is on the increase
DeleteEspecially within the aisian community
So sorry
OMG Ringworm! LOL
ReplyDeletein town today, John you would have thought you were the Queen of England.
All the commoners, with their bra straps showing with boob tube dresses, showing tattoos on shoulders, boobage, arms and the new craze I have seen lately is long poems or songs from the top of the thigh to the knee of younger ladies. And that was just the ladies.
Lets not talk about the extremely drunk men in the street with their bum cracks hanging out and the boys who walk along with their trousers belted below their bum and 5 inches of pants showing. they have to walk bow/gangly legged to keep them up. it flits across my mind to go up behind them and yank them down... lol but that would be wrong obviously
What about scouse eyebrows can I throw those in the mix?
Now WHAT IS a scouse eyebrow, dare I ask?
Deletegirls with eyebrow that look like furry caterpillars that have been dipped in boot polish and stuck on their face.
Deleteis it me or are young girls trying to look like pantomime dames?
they are prettier with out all the make up
I fully concur with the previous speaker x
Deletesorry I forgot to say the boob tube dresses were on ladies like myself, rather on the large side! my own fat is offensive to me let alone anyone elses
DeleteSemi-interesting fact: Street-urchins in the East End of London would fake white dog-shit to sell to tanners, who used it for some unspeakable purpose in the leather industry. About 300 years ago, my family were East-End tanners, so they probably fell for the same old trick.
ReplyDeleteYou know a lot about shit
DeleteI am intrigued - how would one fake white dog excrement? There may still be some call for it?
DeleteI will send you a handmade dirty post card!
ReplyDeletexoxoxo
I want to live with the common people. I keep up the memories of seventies porn movies and continue to wear a moustache!
ReplyDeleteFun fact for you.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in a mid terrace which was actually a third of a mansion that was originally owned by the bamforth family - the people who created the dirty seaside postcards. There was a postcard museum in holmfirth up until recently commemorating them too.
It is interesting dan
DeleteI think I saw the curator interviewed on FLOG IT recently
Who says you are fat John? At least not the photos you post.
ReplyDeleteI still see too many wasps here and some how manage to get stung. And wall paper is out around here.
ReplyDeleteBut way too many bad tatoos on too much flesh from people talking loudly on cell phones.
Great lists! Me and my sister used to say that white dog poo came from white poodles!!! I have no idea why we said that!
ReplyDeleteWell, you did bring back some memories. White dog poo, maybe the dog food has changed. Doilies, they use to be everywhere. Cinzano Bianco that dreaded drink that drove everyone mad, and it was supposed to be sophisticated. Oh the square ice cream in a wafer, they should bring that back, what a memory.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid the gangs are still here. Maybe that's because they moved up to East London :(
Summer has hit London, so I know what you mean about flesh, there is nothing left to the imagination and bad tattoos are all over but wait until they get old, ha ha ha ha.
I now feel the urge to send you a handwritten letter - a habit that I keep alive and well as I frequently pen letters to friends and elderly 'non family' members who don't have the dreaded internet or who can't text oh and of course my new penpal on death row (not sure that will last tho)
ReplyDeleteLots of white dog poo round here - our two eat bones!!
ReplyDeleteOff your list we also have -
Wasps
Hedgehogs
Moustaches
Square ice cream in a wafer
Rain hats
Little red spiders on hot paving stones
Doilies
High Tea
Headscarves
Fishmongers
House martins
Cinzano
Sugar puffs
Personal, hand written letters
Children's dens in the countryside
.... and of course the - White dog poo
You should make your own ice cream wafers, it's a really cheap way to buy ice-cream in the long brick, you just have to get it home from the supermarket rather sharpish!!
All the wasp population of the entire land was in my garden around 5pm this afternoon just as we were eating. The old lady bloomers hang on my next door neighbour's washing line every Monday and you'll find the square ice cream in a wafer in my mother's house!! lol Great post!
ReplyDeleteHad a wasp sting me this weekend, sadly....he is now deceased. Funeral arrangements are pending.
ReplyDeleteI miss those hip hugger elephant bell bottom pants made of corduroy!!! Now THAT was a fashion statement you aren't likely to miss. Scratch that, I don't miss them, just the memories that accompany the era.
Great list!!!
