Bridget Jones

The luminous and talented Zellweger

Much has been made of Renee Zellweger's " new look" over the past year or so.
I couldn't care less about it all, I really couldn't as in Bridget Jones' Baby with her rosy faced scrubbed clear of make up she looks fabulous, mature and sweet as a nut.
Shame the same cannot be said for the film.

It's a right old dog's dinner.
Now in her mid forties, Bridget remains a London singleton. She has split up,from long term partner Darcy ( Colin Firth- who now looks incredibly old and rather odd after a whole new set of teeth), Is slightly isolated from her three ""best mates" who now all have partners and children and finds herself battling hipster new blood at work, all things that the average middle aged Bridget Jones fan could identify with and would enjoy on film. But the writers have thrown into the mix a who-is-the -daddy mystery farce between Bridget, Darcy and an " attractive" American ( Patrick Dempsey) as well as shoe-horning in minor subplots featuring Bridget's harridan of a mother, exasperated father and an ill advised and un funny cameo from Emma Thompson playing a bad tempered  obstetrician

Apart from two slightly amusing set pieces there is only one laugh out loud moment when the three leads get stuck in a revolving door of a hospital accident and emergency department ( a wonderfully funny bit of slapstick)  But the rest of the film is a let down which is a shame as Zellweger is an actress of some charm and talent.
6/10

I've got a run of night shifts now, so shall be a bit thin on the ground. We've got a workman coming round too, to re roof our outside toilet! Happy days for Winnie.......difficult sleep days for me no doubt.....hey ho especially as the new mattress is somwhat " springy" the Prof and I seem to rolling about on top of it like two fat toddlers in a ball pool!

  1. I saw Ms Zellweger in a TV interview promoting this film. She looked anorexic. I preferred her curvaceous look. I wonder what's next in the sequence? "Bridget Jones's Hip Replacement"? "Bridget Jones's Funeral"? I would definitely pay to see the latter.

  3. I did see the first one, but usually find sequels disappointing. What has she done to her face; plastic mish-mash?

  4. Not seen any of the films. If the only amusement is a bit of slapstick, perhaps it is not for me. Not that I don't like slapstick.

I don't like a springy mattress but I suppose it could work in some way for you and The Prof.

    1. It saves going into the house to use the main bathroom when one is dirty from gardening!
Ours is also a great centre of spider breeding!

    3. My grandparents had a nice indoor toilet and one built on the outside use for gardening. In addition my grandmother insisted my grandfather use the outside one for his bowel movements.

    2. LOL! My daughter used to watch that show. As an ex-dental hygienist I get what you mean. When some celebrities get their teeth done they wind up with either a mouth full of Chiclets or your aforementioned Bingo look.

  12. I haven't been the slightest bit tempted to see this movie, I must admit.

  13. I thought it would be a bomb. The plot sounded like they tried to stretch out the delight of the first two movies to the point of the ridiculous. It is sad that they did this and I feel bad that Renee made her comeback in this disaster. She is a very good actress who probably did this for the money.

  14. The last movie I saw Colin Firth in was "Kingsmen" a couple of years ago and I thought he looked terrible then. WAY too thin and pinched looking. I'm worried for the man.

  15. I didn't think much to the first one, didn't bother with the second so don't think I'll watch this! My wife probably will though!

  16. Zellweger is a good actress in a world of crappy parts and plots.
Too bad the same talents that wrote/made the original film weren't there for this one. I was in the mood for something like and clever.

  17. When I first saw the promo's for the film on TV, I thought: Too bad they couldn't get Zellweger to reprise that role. I sure didn't recognize her. I don't care for her 'new look'. Your review will bump the flick down from 'check it out' to 'when it comes to TV'.

  18. I haven't seen the films or read the books, but from what you say about the who-is-the-daddy mystery, maybe it's a prequel to Mamma Mia!

  21. I've seen the first two movies...but i'am not a huge fan. After the previews i had decided not to see the new one...they just all looked so old and tired... Colin Firths appearance shocked me as much as Renee's... The last movie i saw him in was The Kingsman.... very good movie by the way... and he did look rather thin....Did you see him in the Kings Speech? another good one from several years ago.. So sad to see our beloved actors and actresses getting old...ofcourse that means we are getting old too...lol Hugs! deb
