I went to the soft opening of the semi finished Theatre Clwyd tonight and what a beautiful renovation it is and will be. Gone has the glum 1976 claustrophobic feel where white concrete, red bricks, gold and glass has made way to a lofty airy modern space filled with wood, natural colours and soaring windows overlooking Mold town and the surrounding green hills.
The arthouse cinema will make a return too……..how wonderful
The musical Tick Tick Boom was a little dated and shouty for me. But it was professionally done acted and sung , and beautifully staged. But I’m a sucker for a good song, and Jonathan Larson’s musical didn’t have many.
Which was unfortunate
Hope the beautiful and new interior and window views off-set the less than satisfying performance with too few outstanding songs. Nice to have been out and about!
ReplyDeleteHugs!
Read you every day John, really enjoy the blog (and the pets). Just a shout out to all the film buffs in blogland, lovely New Zealand film out “Tina”. Very N Z but really feel good.
ReplyDeleteWhat a shame about the musical, but the theatre does look impressive. A light, open, modern space. xx
ReplyDeleteThe theatre looks terrific! I saw the movie adaptation of "Tick, Tick, Boom" with Andrew Garfield. It got an Oscar nomination, I believe. I wouldn't bother watching it again.
ReplyDeleteLiked the building but not the musical. You broke even.
ReplyDeleteGood news that the arthouse cinema is returning. Seems like a really big improvement on the building too.
ReplyDeleteThe new Theatr Clwyd looks beautiful - Terry Hands would have been so proud to see his baby return fresh and new born. Not surprised at your reaction to Tick Tock Boom. Have always found Jonathan Larsen to be seriously overrated. But at least you went; and to be impressed by the new look building rather than the show is totally the right result!
ReplyDeleteI remember the building when it was new in the 70s, and was one of the first group of staff in Oriel Theatr Clwyd. That looks a definite improvement!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the movie “Tick Tick Boom.” But I can’t remember a single song. That tells me something.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great renovation.
ReplyDeleteThe renovation is attractive, open and airy. Shame about the musical, though.
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize that Jonathan Larson wrote "Rent", which I loved. I'll take a look for the netflix movie "Tick, Tick Boom". I wondered what Jonathan had died of and assumed, wrongly, that it was AIDS. He died of an aortic dissection. He had fucking chest pain, they should have been able to diagnose it.
ReplyDeleteI saw that years ago, in New York, with Molly Ringwald playing one of the leads. I liked it OK, but I don't remember much about it except her.
