I See You

Terry, my Flower Show nemeses popped up in the lane this morning.
The usual gauntlet has just been thrown down
It's quiche Lorraine handbags at Dawn.
I think we are going head to head in the boiled fruitcake, biscuit and boiled egg categories too!

With non of the responsibilities of help running the show Terry said sagely
" We can just enjoy the competition this year!"
" Bring it on bad boy!" I told him

Good luck, weren't you placed in two out of those three categories last time?

    1. lol it's historic and a bit of fun... you have to boil your egg and present it on a saucer on top of some lettuce

    2. ... and pray your yolk is perfectly centred when the egg is cut in half by the judge!

  17. I think that it is all fun. I honestly didn't know people still had flower shows before I found your blog. I thought that those things died with Bewitched and the Andy Griffith Show.

    1. Hi Linda, here in Thornton Cleveleys, near Blackpool, will be having our annual flower, arts and craft show, on 17 Aug. It's been running for 77 yrs.

A flower shoe is such a pretty event. Thinking about the backstabbing, last minute arrangements and desperation about flowers is just the icing on the cake. Or the filling in the quiche, no?

Village shows can be awfully competitive; a friend's mother (in her 80s) demanded a 're-think' by the judges as she had won the 'best Victoria sponge cake' prize for the past 4 years and was awarded 2nd place. Gasp, horror! The judges stood firm and she walked away muttering 'a conspiracy'.

  30. Had to giggle at the handbags at dawn comment. When Sir was nursing in EAU he said you could lay money on the fact that when they were moving a female patient he was the one wth the handbag dangling on his arm🤣

Don't let yourself be talked into helping out last minute with car parking duties or raffle ticket selling etc. Doers always end up being asked to help with stuff.
Just enjoy the show this year
Good luck with the baked goodies entries.

  33. I once burnt boiled eggs (forgot about them, pan went dry, and the shells were scorched).

I love boiled fruitcake, so I'd be willing to travel to judge this event.

  34. With reference to the 12 Swiss rolls, I had a similar go around with Victoria sandwich. I'm the go to gal for British baking among my Canadian friends. I was requested to make one for the nursing home tea. Not an easy task when flour and sugar are processed differently, measurements and temperatures have to be converted and appropriate pans are hard to find. Trial and error eventually produced something close and I grew fat on the rejects.
