Sixth Sense

I didn't take to him immediately.
I had been talking to his partner at the door when he suddenly appeared behind her.
He had one of those hormone filled expressions on his face
It shrieked, ( well bellowed) for me to keep my distance.
I sensed a controlling and overbearing man.
He talked over the woman and didn't smile once when I rattled on

The afternoon had been filled by smalltalk and the selling of raffle tickets
Scottish Margaret is going to celebrate her golden wedding anniversary very soon. Alan Walker bought 20 quids worth without batting an eye and I caught up with Pippa's new herbaceous border as she scoured her purse for change.
Small talk and chat.
That's what village life is about.
That sixth sense that tells you something is off is a powerful feeling. Within a second I felt I had read the relationship that I had no real knowledge of and I walked away from the house uneasy and unsettled.
Behind closed doors eh?

Sounds like a bastard. I'd keep a discrete eye on that one.

  2. sadly, there are many many homes where that scene is reality. my ex-husband was a control freak; only one reason why I divorced him.

  3. I believe my sixth sense for that kind of situation is weak but once i see the signs I wont doubt myself again.

There was a couple came to my church, they had five young boys. A few weeks before Christmas he complained to me that his wife was sick and he had to manage the house as well as going to work. He told me she had a UTI and then h e told me she wasn't getting better because she was too sick to walk to the docs. I knew he had a car so I gave him my stoniest look and said that the housework would be easier when he stopped work for the holidays. He never spoke to me again and she left him within weeks

  4. Sometimes it spills out into the open but only to go back behind closed doors again. It is a very sad life for many.

  5. What goes on behind closed doors, eh?

  7. That sounds like my first husband. It got so bad he even accused women of fancying me.. I had no life and no friends in the end.... Thank goodness I left. The women's reguge was a very safe place to rediscover who I was.

    2. good on you, cherie! no woman (or man) should have to take horrible abuse from their spouse/partner.

    3. I'm no shrinking violet but the way Voldermort managed to isolate me by alienating everyone was quite insidious. I pity those that have to deal with these ba@@@@@tards behind closed doors without the resources that I had. Anna

  14. I know what you mean about the Something Off feeling. And I know what you mean about what goes on behind closed doors. I hope you don't hear in due course of some domestic tragedy....

  15. Sixth sense without a doubt but you're also a highly skilled, trained professional who would recognize the signs blindfold. Without tipping your hand, do you have someone in law enforcement you could casually mention this to?

  19. I have always been able to take one look at someone and instantly be able to sum them up. Only trouble is, this comes with the sort of face that shows every thought within so if I don't like someone, they will know that fact!

I suspect your chap would be one of those with a crushing handshake too. I feel sorry for his wife . . .

    1. It is impossible to take one look at someone and "instantly be able to sum them up" You have no idea what has just happened in their life. Someone's might look grumpy because they have a toothache, for example.

    2. Sorry, but I have only ever been wrong once, and that was an extremely shy introverted sort that I couldn't "read". I am an empathic person and stand by what I say.

      Delete
    3. I will also add, I am probably a bit more than just empathic because I can also tell when a letter will arrive - sometimes totally unexpectedly - and next post, there it is. Same with phone calls. Not all the time, but it happens when I am relaxed and "open" to such insights. The knowing what people are like is a real gut reaction.

  22. Perhaps a whispered word into the ear of the local constable might be in order. Just so they can cast an eye upon the goings on. You wouldn't want anyone to be hurt when perhaps it can be prevented.

    2. This poor guy, he certainly is being painted with an evil brush, so to speak. Surely ''benefit of the doubt" should prevail, since John spoke to the couple for only moments. If John is worried, he could casually befriend the woman, in his busybody travels. No need for the constable or a hitman, yeesh.

    3. Agreed.... Maybe the post just underlined my suspicious nature?

  25. I was listening to a Radio programme about 'domestic abuse' last night. The strangest thing was why people stayed in the abusive relationship for as long as they did.

  26. The trouble is John that some women put up with that sort of behaviour all their lives instead of breaking free.

  27. I have been thinking about this post a great deal. You may have jumped to the wrong conclusion in which case you have judged this man on a few seconds.
If your instinct is right then you really need to look further into this.
I befriended a young girl whom I thought was being bullied on her way to school. I felt she could come to me if she needed a bolthole, she's blossomed into a wonderful teenager, school prefect & looking forward to college.
Sometimes just a sentence can help.

    1. Indeed. Who knows what is the truth. The post is not about what was the truth... I probably will never know if my instinct was right or wrong. I wrote just what i thought and what i felt.....

  31. Reminds me of the time my friend and I at Chelsea flower show accidently squirted orange juice on the coat of the woman in front. We were helpless with laughter and nearly wet ourselves sniggering. Must be a nurse thing.
