A First!

Now I like a new experience just like the next man, but one would have thought that a Primary School Sports Day may not be high on the list of a middle aged, somewhat cosmopolitan country homosexual with time on his hands!
strange as it would seem I rather enjoyed myself
For yesterday the affable despot Jason invited me to an alien land full of egg and spoon races, javelin throwing seven year olds and balance-the-bean-bag -on-the-head multitasking!
Yes it was Liv and Eve's school Sports Day at the village school.

It's rather sweet to be included in such an experience and I must say within minutes I was transported to those old fashioned primary school sunny afternoons of the 1960s where Fat boy Gray came almost last in most races , just beating a hyperventilating lad called Allen who wore a surgical boot

Today, unlike our sports day, the onus is on taking part and obtaining a prized " sticker" rather than just winning a cup or shield although it was nice to see young Liv fist pumping the air when she slaughtered the opposition in everything she took part in......
Today's School Sports are also attended by parents and grandparents who were marshaled with much skill by the wisecracking  head teacher with a megaphone. No photos can be taken which was a shame as it proved to be a rather naive , innocently sweet afternoon which was capped off nicely by a collective " marathon " where the entire school of all ages and both sexes galloped like loons around the racetrack in organised chaos.
I came away smiling and ever slightly melancholy for never having experienced the very individual joy of attending your child's sports day!

I will leave you with some more novelty veg entries
Keep em coming! And please send them as adownloadable attachment
I am having problems with some sent by email
Thank you all for your time and efforts

  1. Having been brought up in a household of sports-mad boys I have a deep loathing of any sport. Even seeing my own child participate in sports day was a day to be endured (I think they felt the same). I much preferred the school plays.

  2. How sweet to be invited to Liv & Eves sports day. I did love the pre school ones. My gangly, long legged Joe was so fast & first over the finish line every time until the stockier soon to be rugby playing boys developed !

  3. Like Andi, sport and me have never mixed - mainly because I was so bad at it and I do like winning.
But it does sound to have been a fun day John - largely due I suspect to the attitude of the head and staff who made it a day when winning was not important.

    1. There is a mixture of kids in the school, including some special needs kids, so the enjoyment for everyone to participate rather than win is evident anyway

  4. It sounds like a great day. But I'm not sure I like seeing your banana in that black thong. Leave something to the imagination.

    1. I know ! we have albums and albums full of 2 children, through the years, in races and school contests ( much like your veggie contest here) ..I don't look at them all the time but I can bring out a photo to use as blackmail lol or just a teary eyed hour spent Remembering.

    2. I was just looking at that photo and thinking if men and women ran that race, who would win .. I would think while men might be more athletic, women are so very good at juggling things ... running through the house with an egg in a spoon might be easy peasy for a woman.

  10. Oh John you've just revived memories of our eldest daughters best sportsday. She was running quite quickly in her race then realised her best friends (twins) were behind her. She stopped and waited for them and they crossed the line as a trio, hand in hand. So sweet. Nowadays she'd probably climb over their prone bodies to come first! x

  11. Oh how I hated those sports days...when I found out our only child felt the same way I released her from her misery...there's no need to put a child through that.

  12. Field days are so much fun for the little people and fun to watch....especially if the drama of winning is set aside.

    1. Our son went to a nice school that had field day and parents brought picnics and after all the sports events, everyone had a picnic on the lawn.
This school was the Elizabeth Morrow School .. one of the nicest schools I have ever seen and we were so glad to be able to send him there.

  13. We went to all our children's sports events and also all their band/plays/marches/ceremonies. Now we do it with our grandchildren's events and those bleaches/chairs have gotten less comfortable as our buns no longer have much padding.

  14. My Boy Scout did not have children for reasons beyond his control. He adores them and they flock to him wherever we go. I see his pain as we watch particularly touching father/child scenes in movies. I cannot imagine what that is like.

  15. In my day it was called a 'sports day', the first three got medals and that was it; I get really tired of this pc nonsense. Everyone has a talent in life or a gift, it needn't be sport and getting kids hung up on 'not winning'. That's life. Participate, you win or not, leave it at that. Going back 40 years at my last sports day at school, horror story, one of the father's in the 'sack race' had a cardiac arrest and sadly died.

  16. I was definitely NOT an athlete growing up (or now, for that matter) and so it always surprised me when I saw our two kids doing well in various sports (and wanting to do them, being happy to take part). We would call it a "play day" here at our schools. The real thing would be called "track and field day" where results would be recorded and then students would qualify to move on to the next level of competition. -Jenn

  17. My son wasn't a 'natural athlete' when he was young, but he thought very well!
At his nursery school sports day, (he was three), there was a 'water carrying race', it didn't matter how fast or slow the children went, the person with the most water left in their bowl at the finish line was the winner.....I have never seen a child walk more slowly, ever! By the time he reached the finish line two more races had been run, but he didn't spill one drop of water! It was the only ''Winner's Medal' he got until he went to University and became sports mad!

  20. I don't think anyone will be able to top that last entry! It could have only been improved by putting the banana in a mankini rather than a thong!!! I am glad that you were able to experience the school sports day. I bet Liv and Eve loved having you come along.
