A Little Post About Lurve!

Valentines day....PAH!

I popped into Sainsburys yesterday, to get neighbour Trevor a chicken dinner and a paper. You couldn't move for men pawing carefully over buckets of flowers.
It wasn't much of an uplifting spectacle.
I'm not an  overly romantic animal. I find large romantic gestures somewhat cloying!
Does that surprise you?
Answers on a postcard please!

I had only two serious " boyfriends" before the Professor came along. I did however kiss quite a few frogs in the search for Mr Right but that was a long time ago in a country far far away.
There were no Mr Right's before the Professor......Mr Self Obsessed certainly, Mr Straight acting too and surprisingly Mr Getting-married-to-a-woman ....oh and lets not forget Mr Charmless, Mr Bad Breath Mr Strange Sex and Mr Mommy Lover.....like I said ......I kissed a few frogs
Before all that I did date a few women, two of which I am still friends with today.
Dating women may not have been fully satisfying but it was more civilized I always thought

However, despite my lack of a romantic personality, I must say something here
The Prof and I were married two years ago next month and my wedding day was the best day of my life.
It was the best thing I ever did!
Hey ho..there....I have said it!

I'll leave you with this tiny animation I made last Spring....it has nothing to do with Valentine's but it has everything to do with lurve
It shows an old Welsh Terrier chasing bees in our back garden

  2. I guess most of us have worked our way through a string of Mr or Ms Not-Quite-Rights. Glad you eventually found "The One"!

  4. I too kissed many many many frogs. RTG and I are at 25 years married. I never dated other women cause I don't swing that way.

  5. I had one Mr Not Right before meeting the love of my life. 35 years and still going strong!
So glad John you found your one and only.

  6. Years ago my husband was with friends at the pool hall on a Saturday. One fellow called to order flowers sent to his wife as it was Valentines Day. All the others lined up and did the same including my one and only. The bill came a few weeks later. When my hubby opened it and saw how much a dozen roses cost he almost passed out. The last flowers I ever received from him! We will be married 53 years this coming November so I believe that says more than the flowers. Happy Valentines Day John!

  9. I think the only romantic thing the wife and I ever did was getting married on Valentines day.
Now we regret it because it's impossible to get a table at a restaurant on our anniversary. Never mind - despite the lack of nauseating slushy romantic stuff, we've still managed 22 years.

  10. After kissing lots of frogs ... and toads .... I met and married my Mr Wright just after my 18th birthday. We lasted 26 years. I then divorced him and then met and married my Mr Right, we've been married 10 years this year, true love at last :-)

  12. To find the one to be by our side for all of it- well, nothing could be better on this earth.

  13. I bet your last Scotch egg on this earth that, in truth, you are a romantic. Which, considering that you are British (and a bloke), doesn't make it easy for you to admit to.

Happy Valentine to you and the Prof, and steer clear of Supermarket flowers and cellophane - what are professional florists for if not to add a touch of class?

  15. I found a home made Best Grandma Ever valentine on the counter this morning, and the maker will find chocolate and flowers tonight. It's not a bad tradition to foster in the pure of heart.

lol ... I started young with the Mr Wrongs ... running away and getting married while not even out of my teens yet !
I might have blown it that time but then I met my Mr Right and weirdly, we were never apart from those early days when we met .. I had flown in to NYC on my way to Europe with friends .. I never left NYC. We were married since ...1971.
And his thoughts on Valentines ... "he didn't need a made up holiday to buy me presents or to tell me how much he loved me."
lol, he was all talk ... he bought me some of the most gorgeous presents for Valentines <3

  24. My first husband was big with the "grand gesture" that reflected back on him as the giver, but when it came to the everyday things that really show that you love a person, not so much. My now husband of 40 years makes the bed, does dishes and laundry, and sees to it that my car is in good order because he worries about my safety. I'll take that over fancy gifts any day. Happy Valentine's Day, John!

  25. The best Valentine's day I've ever had was a year when my best friend lived with me and my daughter. When we all got together for dinner that night, each of us had brought gifts. I picked up flowers for boquets, Zoe got each of us a small box of chocolates, and Lisa got each of us a small heart shaped pin. So, we all had chocolates, jewelry and flowers! No men needed! :-)

  28. Love the gif! My February is ruled by the birthday of my eldest(22 this year..!) and our anniversary on the 23rd(23 years now..!). We usually save our energies and cash for those dates as they have real sentimental value for us. Exceptions happen mostly due to some eye catching idea or item, like the string of heart shaped fairy lights that still hang out on the porch in all their red glowing glory! Sorry about the above delete, I should have proof read before posting!

  29. I love that animation. And yes, I think you are a bit of a romantic even if you don't like to admit it.

  34. Romance and love are not the same thing in my book. Mr GBT and I have been together nearly 27 years....in the early days I told him not to buy me a Valentine [we don't bother now anyway]...I was quite surprised when I got a card and even more so when he told me he had taken me at my word and not bought me one. Now that was an interesting conversation...I did find out who the sender was and was not impressed by his impudence. Arilx

  35. We are not into the commercial Valentine's stuff, but have been very happy for nearly 41 years.... and I was fortunate, I didn't have to kiss any frogs ... well, if I'm honest, one who I was keen on would have been a disaster, fortunately he was a disaster with someone else.

John, you are a real romantic, underneath the practical-dog-poohed exterior, you give that away with your frequent, loving comments about the Prof..... that is so much more convincing than overpriced flowers on Valentine's Day.

  36. Whether single or coupled, I have never liked Valentine's Day. Why pay $50 for roses that were $25 the day before? And the pressure to give/receive gifts is a pain. The hype has always been too much for me. Luckily, my hubby is A-OK with it. We exchange cards and kiss and go about our day. It's worked for 30 years, so if it ain't broke....

    1. My husband referred to it as the Hallmark Holiday.
But he still did the Valentines thing very nicely :)
Today in his honor, I am wearing a necklace that he bought me for Valentines a long time ago.

  39. I like the bobby photo. Your history is not dissimilar to mine. I settled for Mr Almost Right which in time turned into Mr Right. Btw, I think you made a typo, you said it is nearly two years since your wedding. That simply cannot be true.

  42. Thankyou for sharing. And thankyou for the animation..was that Meg chasing bees?
I needed that little bit of doggy luurve today..my Bella (small white & not so fluffy these days) has been diagnosed with hypothyroidism which explains her thinning coat. But she is as I write this undergoing major surgery and is very ill so may not make it. The love & devotion our dogs give us is worth so much more than gifts of the tangible kind. Exx
