What Is Your Best Friend Event?

Who do you spend time with when you want some friendly time?
I don't mean people here.
We all have a best friend who you can laugh and cry with ....no ...I mean who is your best friend when it comes to your own company?
If that statement leaves you scratching your head .let me explain with an example.
My oldest best friend has always been the cinema.
With the Prof talkng research and eating Swedish meatballs all week, I shall be having some sneaky indulgences at the " flicks"
Today it is Eye In The Sky with Helen Mirren, yesterday it was Midnight Special with the strangely attractive Joel Edgerton. Tomorrow afternoon I got the last seat in the Theatre Clwyd showing of Spotlight.
Escapism a la Hollywood for sure but beggars can't be choosers .....art house foreign movies are not thick on the ground in North Wales.
I will indulge myself with some film reviews tomorrow.
I love movie going in an afternoon. I love near empty cinemas, I love to go alone . I love not speaking with anyone else and I love to get there early without the palaver of clamouring for a seat.
If any of you ever see me in my cinema seat on a rainy afternoon , leave me the fuck alone ...
I'm having fun

What is your " best friend" event?
Answers on a postcard please.....

I've never had a best friend forever, although I thought I had at times. My partner is the same. My best friend is walking and taking photos. I like to do so alone. I couldn't bear anyone asking, so what are taking a photo of now? Or worse, can we speed it up a bit?

  3. My best friend event......in a vintage/antique/thrift shop by myself, slowly going through everything and wondering what brought this item here and the story behind it.

  4. A very long walk. Preferably with a dog. Preferably on the fells. Clear skies, fresh air, views for miles. Early in the morning so nice and quiet. X

  6. A bit of shade on an empty beach for me.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Sitting on a smooth bit of rock on a craggy beach, with the waves racing in and crashing noisily onto the rocks. No-one close by chattering away at me. The beach has to be deserted, except for 2 or 3 people in the distance throwing balls for dogs.

  8. I agree with you; a day at the movies, getting lost in a story, would be for me.

  12. Having my route planned, fresh batteries in my GPS and a few hours going geocaching on a sunny day. I love solving puzzles, seeing different scenery and getting some exercise as well.

  13. Same as you, John: cinema! Looking forward to the reviews, I haven't seen any of those films yet.

  14. The battered old sofa, from my great grandmother, in our sitting room, with a glass of wine (or earlier in the day, a cup of tea) and one of three things to read: an E.F. Benson Lucia book, a Pym novel, or - and it's odd, but a book I adore - James Pope-Hennessy's life of Queen Mary.

  15. I love to putter around the house. Right now, I'm repairing and refinishing a small oak, arts and crafts style plant stand that has seen much better days. You couldn't pay someone for all the work I have put into it. How did I acquire it, you wonder? I was finishing an oak, arts and crafts library table which my partner owns. Sensing I was nearing the end, he sashays into the back garage where I work and just leaves the plant stand on my work table and walks away. Not a word of instruction or explanation, but none were needed. I knew what he wanted. I also love to garden, plant flowers, weed, trim etc. but none of us cuts the grass. We pay a neighbor with a tractor to do that, freeing me to work on other projects inside and outside the house.

  16. I don't have any people best friends but my 'other' friends are craft or garden books, writing, painting, drawing or sewing. I am quite happy with my own company, a pile of books to read or a crafty project to get stuck in to.

  18. To walk for hours in the countryside is wonderful. So much to see as you plod the yards and the miles. To me that is the best kind of self-therapy. But I would hate to be part of a walking group. All that idle chatter would spoil the experience.

Sitting by the open back door during a good thunder storm, a long cycle ride on a warm Sunday morning before the rest of the world is out of bed, a walk in the middle of nowhere with the wife, and being creative in the kitchen while listening to music and enjoying a nice bottle of Rioja.

  21. Kayaking up a small, slow, lonely creek from its mouth at the sea until it gets too shallow to go further. The not-so-silent quiet that is filled with small noises of birds, insects, wind through the leaves is my best friend. I don't get to visit this friend very often, but each visit is a distinct pleasure and rejuvenation of spirit.

  25. I used to have the 'Perfect Day' occassionally... when i was still working. A day off often translated to a trip into town , grab a big drink at Sonic, carry it with me while i made the rounds of all the craft stores.. taking my time , by myself, thinking up projects and things i could make, taking myself out to lunch... to a nice salad bar...then catch a matinee of a movie that did not interest anyone but me... get some popcorn.. a candy... settle in and not have to worry if anyone else was enjoying themselves... was hubby bored... was he enjoying the show... nope just me..I know how to be my own best friend... i'm comfortable in my own company. Many people are not and that used to surprise me. But then i was very much a loner as a child. It feels good to get back in touch with me. Hugs! deb

  26. I love a deserted cinema on a Saturday morning, no kids going to the loo every 2 minutes. Or a Sunday afternoon Agatha Christie marathon, Poirot or Marple I'm not fussed...

    ReplyDelete
  27. A whole day of sewing. Nobody else in the house requiring feeding and watering or making a noise. No washing machine going just the sound of my sewing machine as it churns out either a garment or a quilt.......bliss.

  28. Books, radio.......and (of course) cinema, preferably with a sparse audience - but SOME audience.

  29. The internet has basically become my best friend--or at least the friend I spend the most time with these days. It was a friendship I resisted at first as I'm basically a technophobe. Before the Internet, it would have been the media in general--books, movies, TV, and comics. All of which can be found on the Internet, so maybe THAT is why it's my best friend!

  30. Riding my lovely old chestnut mare, just rambling about the hills, going where we want at the speed of a horse. Dogs alongside, protecting us from vicious squirrels and bunnies. The more hours, the better.

  31. A train journey on my own. An empty cinema I also love. Most of all being incognito anywhere, nobody knowing where I am.

  32. My very best friend is my book, whichever one she is - I'm fickle. I take her everywhere with me. Propped up on a collapsible book holder, she conspicuously dines with me in low class and high class eating establishments. We start the day together and end it side by side.
I try to be as loyal as I can because she is so herself, but the occasional sneak out to the movies where I too can arrive first to sit silent in an almost empty theater (with my own snack hidden in my purse)and the feeling that this movie was made just for me is companionship equal to my written friend. And I love! to be alone.

  35. For me it is sitting down in the evenings at my worktable and drawing something.
It could be for a project or just what I want to draw. Just me with the Square Dogs sleeping, no phone calls people to talk to sometimes a book on tape or a favorite movie on really low.
Or I sit outside in late afternoon and watch or draw all the birds flying around below, or whatever critter has moseyed by.
Just very nice quiet me time.

  43. Hi John - I've been lurking for a while, decided it was time to respond. My best-friend-event has to be garage sales (car-boot sales to you I think). I love going out quite early on a Sat morning, with no more than $20 in change, just to see what treasure I can amass from someone else's junk. If the weather is foul, then a thrift shop of any kind will do.

  50. Love reading , gardening, walking, listening to music by myself and dance like a looney , nature, watching the ocean , bush walking , time with family , taking a moment to just zone in on the moment. Sometimes little moments in life need to be appreciated and I try to savour the moment. On a Saturday afternoon I occasionally lie down for ten minutes and I listen to the notices in my neighbourhood. The faint sound of lawn mowers, birds and whatever is happening . This ritual is strangely calming and zen like . Pottering in my garden and planting things is one of my most enjoyable things to do. I love going to the many wonderful markets around here. I also love where I live and going for a drive and absorbing the natural world around me. The older I get the more enjoyment I have in simpler things.

  51. I love going out to lunch alone, eating something nice and taking a book along to read.

I also like sitting outside on clear nights with a glass of wine.

  52. If it's a crying day I go to bed.
All other days it's the cinema. There is one I have discovered recently which is art house, tastefully decorated, fully accessible for my mobility issues and has a wonderful cafe. That is my dream day.
Unfortunately, most days i cant afford the travel time or the ticket & parking prices so I go to the crappy local. It's not as perfect but it's still the cinema

  53. The bookstore is where I want to be alone! Especially if there are new novels out that I if interesting. And magazines to gaze upon. No talking or being polite. Just the written word and maybe photos.

  58. It used to be carboots, especially in Winter. It was magical to be up and about in the darkness when so few other people were. I loved the quiet and the stillness of the drive there, the anticipation of what I might find, and the rummaging. Since disposing of the car 2 years ago I don't have those moments, and none of the other things I love to do has quite filled that gap.

  59. I love a lot of the above, reading, music and quiet days. However, I really love to sit on a train, preferably going through the countryside, and look out of the window at the world going by. Love Andie xxx

  63. I have a choice of four, all equally soothing and restorative. A visit to the cinema ... almost any film will do, sitting on the steps to Llandudno beach and looking out to sea ... preferably with a Pug at my side, a brand new book with a big glass of wine or a big mug of coffee, a tin of shortbread and a new box set (my last binge was Weeds ... all eight series).
