Room

With the Prof away in London and needing a soft seat for my bleached bum, I took myself off to a very early one off showing of the movie Room
It's a strangely powerful film to be sure.
Joy( Brie Lawson) and her five year old son Jack ( Jacob Tremblay) are imprisoned in a grubby single room by the mostly unseen character called old Nick. Jack was born in the room and understands only what his mother has taught him about the world. As their living conditions deteriorate, Joy hatches a plan for Jack to escape , a plan that finally liberates the both of them , and the story then explores how mother and son adjust to life in the " normal " world.
As a study of the power of the mother / child relationship Room excels wonderfully. Room also has a great deal to say about the fragility and the transient nature of childhood, as the more " plastic" and sponge like Jack adapts better to his bewildering new freedom than his fiesty but suddenly directionless Mother.
Brie Lawson and the tiny nine year old Tremblay are simply stunning in the lead roles, indeed they have to be as the whole of the first half of the movie is essentially a two hander between the two of them. Joan Allen pops up in a quietly effective turn as Joy's mother as does William H Macy as her father who cannot accept Jack's existence.
Room  is not an easy watch. But it's a worthy one.
8/10

Btw.....our zip wire experience ( booked for Saturday) has been cancelled due to the weather........
Me thinks that The Prof Is secretly pleased..

  1. The film sounds like a good watch. How's your bum now?

    Johns behind was perfectly peachy
But an 'accident' made it painful and bleachy
A great excuse to have a bum on fire
To cancel the hell ride on a zip wire

I was so looking forward to hearing about the zip wire experience!

  3. That film sounds horribly depressing to me, I need something fun to watch. Do you ever see fun films? Something to make me chuckle and not have to delve into thinking about what the characters are going through? Do they even make them anymore?

Shoot! I was anticipating your zip ride! (That would be fun)

Did I miss the cheese post?

  4. The two in the picture look as though they could be extras from Walking Dead. Doesn't sound a very happy film - I'm with SJQ there - life is depressing enough for most people, without actually paying to see it at the cinema.

  9. Zip line experience cancelled? A substitute experience is required and I would like to suggest an ascent of Mount Snowdon, not via the railway but on foot. The two of you will need to be roped together for safety. The photos will look brilliant in one of next week's posts.

  12. I loved the book and was not disappointed in the movie. The actor who played Jack was outstanding and the rest of the cast was excellent also. It was a hard story, but gripping and touching. One of my favorites of last year.

  13. We have the book and read it ages ago, but now we want to read it again before we see the film, we can't find it, which is typical here. We had thought about going to see it on Tuesday but then found that none of our local cinemas were showing it, so went to see Dad's Army instead! Now I'll have to wait for Room on DVD probably so glad you gave it 8/10......Hope your bum is feeling better!!!!

  15. I read the book. It was quite a read. The pictures my mind created while reading about them captive in their room were pretty disturbing. I'm not sure if I want to see the movie... -Jenn

  18. It's been diary-pencilled to see on 29th inst. Didn't want to, really, as any film featuring a young kid as one of its main characters is one of my biggest turn-offs. However there's been a lot of buzz about it and now, clinched by your own seal of approval, I'm a-going to toddle along.

  19. We both really enjoyed this film. The first half in particular was carried very well by the two characters alone.

It's not a depressing film in any way but one that explores human coping mechanisms brilliantly. I think I also gave it an 8/10.
