Two Words

By uttering just two words Pope Francis has proved himself to be a coward and has made a hero out of a stupid small minded woman
It has been reported that during his " secret" meeting with Kim Davis ( the Kentucky Official that refused to officiate at Gay weddings) he hugged and whispered to her  to " Stay Strong" .and by doing so, he has undone much of his perceived good works since his inauguration in 2013.

I am not angry, just deflated

  2. I waited and withheld my approbation whilst everyone was going on and on about the sainted Francis. Recently, I'd begun to cautiously hope.

Nope, he's a religious politician, adept at talking out of both sides of his mouth. He should make a name change, from Pope Francis, to Francis the Talking Mule... it's more appropriate for his temperament. Perhaps Matt Damon should consider a similar, though more forthright, name... to Matt the Jackass.

Sanders is known as a leading progressive voice on issues such as income inequality,[7] universal healthcare, parental leave, climate change,[16] LGBT rights, and campaign finance reform.[17] He rose to national prominence following his 2010 filibuster[18][19] against the proposed extension of the Bush tax cuts. He is also outspoken on civil rights and civil liberties, and has been particularly critical of mass surveillance policies such as the USA PATRIOT Act,[20] as well as racial discrimination in the criminal justice system. He has long been critical of U.S. foreign policy, and was an early and outspoken opponent of the Iraq War.

As I've said on another blog, perhaps during this hush-hush meeting The Holy Father (Bless his red cotton socks!) rebuked her for her multiple marriages and divorces and warned her that in the eyes of God she'll forever be living in a sinful, adulterous relationship unless she returns to her first husband. 17. When I was still a raised and a believer Catholic, I thought the Pope could do no wrong, of course, Then I grew up. At least I grew old if not up, and my faith went the way of the high button shoes. I never forgot what my Grandfather said I cannot tell a prop of what, but what he said I have never forgotten " Ah, the Jesuits, the black popes (meaning everything was done in the shadows. away from the light) the hidden hand that moves the puppets, the éminence grise". I don't know what to think, I am deflated too because for a short while I thought maybe there is hope, the man embraced an Imam and his good friend the rabbi at the Wall. Maybe now everyone can work from whatever we believe into joining together, mutual respect, acceptance, all the things that most religions seem to be very poor of these days. Now that hope has been completely destroyed by him embracing the poison.

The question is why? why to even come closer to someone so toxic that nothing he could say or do now would make this right? The only god she must believe in has to be the one that grants the 5 minutes of fame to those who care little about anything else but themselves. I still would like to know why.

I do wonder, though, would the Pope or anyone else in the western world be encouraging radical Islamists to be strong in their convictions to eliminate the rest of us? Devotion to a God could justify a variety of things.

  21. "It was reported..." but it might not be true or it may be taken out of context.

As a friend of mine posted on his Facebook wall, "Do you think the Vatican kept it a secret that the pope met with Kim Davis? I don't. I think they thought it had no significance whatsoever, as she was
paraded before the pope by politicos and other self importants. To him she was just another pilgrim. Let it go America. Her fifteen minutes are over."

  27. My thoughts on this .. as a non Catholic also ..
If he was a doctor or a lawyer or business man, and some woman told people that he said something "off" .. He would be given the right to defend himself and she would have to be able to prove it in some way.
Fair or not, one of them is lying and they have to be able to prove the accusation.
Otherwise, a possibly innocent good man that people look up to, has been slandered and his character somewhat ruined.
Of course, from my own experience, men in positions of "power" often abuse that power and do bad things ... doctors and lawyers to name a couple. But at the same time, this is the Pope .. Do we really believe her story ?

I sure wouldn't have wanted to be in the Pope's shoes when he was asked to meet with Kim Davis - he was damned if he did and damned if he didn't. Imagine how you would do his job if you were him - it's pretty hard to make much forward progress without being thrown out - and then what progress could you make at all?

A New York Times article suggests that this and other remarks made by the Pope during his US visit seemed to be trying to shake up peoples' established beliefs about their own rightness and other peoples' wrongness. As someone who went to Catholic school and no longer practices, this whole situation makes me think about my mom who taught me to question the teachings of the Church. It also reminds me of one Sunday how during the sermon, our current priest at that time proclaimed he had a hotline to God. My mother nearly choked and said, "No one has a hotline, we can all talk to Him when we want." And so as far as I am concerned the Pope means nothing and for all the good he could do, he wiped it by vindicating her "religious" bullshit. Leviticus hates on divorce too lady, you ain't special.

  44. I am disappointed too... I'm a 'born RC', then grew up and became an Anglican. But the wish for the RC church to reform and stop doing harm (especially in the sexuality area) is still there. I had hopes Francis was heading in the right direction, but it seems to be all talk. Perhaps he was manipulated into this meeting, but it's damaged his image, and as, unfortunately, so far, IMAGE was all he had, that has set back my hopes. I pasted a piece from The Guardian on my Facebook page and I'm interested (unsurprised) that it's got no comments, it was anti-pope, and most people I know have wanted to think the best of him...

  48. Not sure what exactly the controversy here is, or at least why the Pope should be called two-faced. Last I checked the Roman Catholic Church wasn't just against same-sex marriage but same-sex heavy petting, same-sex holding hands, same-sex kissing on the first date, and same-sex passing mash notes in algebra class. Sure, the Pope a while back expressed tolerance toward homosexuality, but homosexual thoughts, not homosexual deeds. Clever of him. If you can't do the deed, then you just bang your head against the wall trying to extinguish the thought. Suffering in the name of Christ or something like that.

As for Kim Davis, she's a Pentecostal. They speak in tongues. As someone mentioned earlier, the Pope likes to speak out of both sides of his mouth, so maybe there's some common ground there.

Reading these comments, I was surprised at the general tone of disappointment, and perhaps shouldn't have been. This Pope has raised peoples hopes much more than I realized. All I can say is that the secular world is FINALLY coming around to acceptance of LGBTQs, and that maybe it's better to focus energy and attention on that. Keep your eye on the ball, in other words.

Speaking of the secular world, as an elected official Kim Davis is part of it. To paraphrase the heterosexual Harry S. Truman, if you can't stand the secular heat, stay out of the secular kitchen.

Almost makes me wonder if other agendas weren't at work here, and on that front, I wonder if the Pope wasn't understanding that appearing to support Kim Davis meant advocating breaking laws. (Not cutting him a break, but the man can't know everything.) Anyhow, this is just too big a mistake not to make me deplore it, as well as wonder. And "reporting"? That's the term for when you want to put out an idea, but you can't confirm it. And that is so blatantly what the conservative religious right wants to convey that I'd doubt it.

I live in Kentucky (but not native; California transplant). There is a lot to love here, but stuff like this is not one of them. Kim Davis is no way, no how a hero. She a bloody bigot and a hypocrite to boot. Yeah, married a zillion times, but also inherited the job from her mother and already is setting up her son to inherit it from her. And from what I hear, it is one of the more highly paid jobs in Rowan County -- no wonder she doesn't want to give it up! The cash from all her witless followers is just an added incentive -- what a gig.

Anyhow, while this has definitely put a dent in my Pope appreciation, I suppose I hadn't hoped for too much anyhow. No matter what, the man--however progressive he might be--is up against centuries of not-so-very-stellar values.

Jeez, I don't comment often. Probably a good thing, the way I can ramble on . . . May I add before I go, however, that not all of Kentucky is like Kim Davis. The state's two largest cities, Lexington and Louisville, both have *significantly* high and active gay populations. :-)

  70. I work for local government and as such I have to work with councillors who represent the BNP; an organisation I absolutely do NOT agree with but if I refused to work with them I'd be fired because that's part of the job and I don't have the luxury of refusing to do part of it - most civil servants don't.and I can't believe this woman is allowed to get away with this crap. If she can't do the job she should step aside and let someone who can do it, rather than ruining what should be a wonderfully special day for the celebrants. As to the Pope I may be mistaken here, but I thought he was meant to be a leader of a Christian faith and; again may be mistaken here as I'm not a practicer of that faith (or any); but I thought one of the basic tenets of that faith was love of one's fellow man; surely this is the message he should be taking forward not 'love of one's fellow man but only if they're not gay'. Seriously as long as it's between consenting adults and doesn't include children or animals who cares who does what with whom and how. That's why it's called a private life.

  72. That's HER version of the story. We have not heard Francis' side so how can we judge fairly . . . as if we have any right to judge. We have a right to our opinions but "let he who is without sin cast the first stone." From more recent statements coming from the Vatican it appears that Kim's version of events was a little cockeyed to say the least! As a journalist myself I see this as a great fault in today's journalism: it is all played for sensationalism and divisiveness and, in that respect, it is wildly succeeding, unfortunately.

  73. An article in Mother Jones today clarifies that Kim Davis was part of an hour-long press-the-flesh session of a lot of people invited by a papal envoy in Washington, a conservative who was appointed by Pope Benedict. Pope Francis, who is just handed a list of names, is unlikely to have known much at all, if anything, about who she is or her circumstances. He spent probably no more than 60 seconds shaking her hand and giving her a rosary before moving on to the next person in line.

Or at least, that is what MJ is reporting and I'd believe it before I'd believe Kim Davis.

  75. This Kim person has a right to her opinion; what she does not have is a right to that high paying job that is funded by taxpayers including those who seek marriage licenses according to the law.

The Vatican is now doing a pull back from their original statement saying that she was in a group of many other people who he met with. Who knows, it is the old tale of he said, she said. I just hope she goes away and makes no noise or news.

  76. WAIT, there's more! It was the Vaticans ambassador to the US who invited Kim Davis to a group audience with the Pope. Wasn't something the Pope asked for, wasn't private. Here's the story now: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/03/world/europe/pope-francis-kim-davis-meeting.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&module=photo-spot-region&region=top-news&WT.nav=top-news&_r=0

  77. Hello, I am thinking as Joy is - how the whole situation has been misunderstood. The press release has obviously come out as I saw it on here: http://www.occupydemocrats.com/pope-francis-kim-davis-is-a-liar-and-i-dont-support-her-bigotry/
Having worked in gorvernment with the people whose job it is to organsie Minister's itineraries etc, it's not very surprising that this happened - Popey wouldn't have had half a clue about it and it's like saying that someone who went to the Queen's Garden Party had been invited to Bucks for an intimate dinner with her. And clearly here are a few staffers at the Vatican who don't have much truck with Frank. I wonder if the offending staffer will end up on Craggy Island with an old drucnk and a half mad intern, like Father Ted? ;-) Either way, for me it isn't about defending the Pope but restoring your faith in humanity xoxo
