Ghosts

The final dogwalk of the evening is a short one.
We amble down the lane and away from the last street light in the village to the gate of Graham's field. The field is always dark, but you can clearly see the far boundary field hedges and trees  set against the sky perhaps four hundred metres away.
It always reminds me of the country set of the film " Night Of The Hunter"

Last night, my teeth were set on edge , by the eerie sound of badgers fighting somewhere over in the riding stables. Their bickering upset the dogs who pulled at their leads, so I hurried them down to the field gate so they could do what they do so we could get back to the comfort of the log burner.

As the dogs sniffed and spun, I looked over the black field at the outlines of the hedges and trees set against the sky and immediately saw the silhouette of a man, standing very still .

I don't know if it was the badgers, or the fact it is almost Halloween or the fact that man was standing very still in the middle of a black field in the middle of the night but I almost crapped myself and seconds later we galloped home like a herd of schoolgirls.

The start of this clip of Night of the Hunter is one of
the most terrifying ever made......
its Mitchum's scream that makes it

So what " supernatural " ghostly experience have happened to you my readers?

I love ghost stories....especially as it is almost Halloween !

THERE WILL BE A PRIZE FOR THE BEST ONE!

( ps this morning I realise that the ghostly silhouette was probably the figure of the guy who lives part time in an old caravan on the other side of the field...he was probably out having a wee or a
Cigarette........I had forgotten about him last night.....in all the hysteria of the dark.

Pps another village ghost story can be seen on my history blog

  1. Hi John. I was going too blog about ghosts. I once looked out of my kitchen window just when it was going dark and an old shadow of a grey lady with a pointed nose and a cape with a hood looked back at me. I shouted to my wife and she just saw it glide past the other window. We realised we had just seen a ghost.

Next day we were looking at old family death certificates we have collected since we came to Ireland. My wife noticed my great grandmother had died the same before that we saw the ghost. Could it have been my great grandmother's ghost we had seen?

I think when you see a ghostly shadow it makes you believe there is an after life.

I used to live opposite very old pub that was haunted; one quiz night I was aware of a figure behind me, so curled my arm round to prevent this person from seeing my answers lol When I turned my head around to give them a piece of my mind for trying to cheat, a figure in a dark grey longcoat and wide brimmed vanished into the fireplace..................... he's been seen outside too, in the beer garden x

  4. Oh I have a few ghostly tales, but I'll just share one here...

When I was in my early 20's I had a dear friend -Cyn- who lived in southern Indiana, in one of the areas which was first settled. Her farm was one of the oldest on record and had mile after mile of stacked (dry) stone walls crisscrossing it. The entire farm was haunted and I had many strange experiences there, but the most peculiar/frightening involved one of her small herd of horses... a mare which was close to foaling.

The mare was on pasture, away from the rest of the herd, and Cyn's oldest son had taken some grain out to her. Cyn and I were feeding the rest of the horses in the barn, a couple of hundred feet from the mare and behind a few trees and one of the walls. Josh had given the mare her grain then turned back to the barn, getting perhaps 30 feet away from her, before she screamed... we could even hear it clearly at the barn. Josh, of course, whipped around to see what was happening and the mare was nowhere in sight.

We all ~ Cyn, myself, and her three older children ~ piled into the pickup (we thought Josh had been hurt) and headed for the pasture. All told *maybe* three minutes had passed, at most. During that time not another peep was heard from the mare. We found Josh across the very large pasture, just beyond the treeline; he was bent over and vomiting copiously, as we pulled up beside him we saw why:

The mare was lying just under a huge old, gnarled Eastern cedar, on a bed of fallen autumn leaves and her belly was slit open, with no sign of the foal. Cyn sent Josh back to the house with the other kids and had him call their vet... when the vet arrived Josh escorted him to where we were with the mare's body. The vet took one look and radioed the local police, according to him it would be impossible for such a clean cut to be made without using a scalpel.

Not wanting to look at the body more than we had to, Josh and I walked along the wall around the pasture where we, quite literally, stumbled over one tiny hoof sticking out of the ground beside the wall. When we called the police over to see what we'd found, the police then called in a bulldozer and operator. It took only a few minutes for the foal's body to be unearthed from it's place under the wall... only that one hoof exposed.

Over the years I've asked myself particulare questions many times 1. How the mare could have ended up across the pasture, (maybe 1/4 of a mile from where Josh had been feeding her grain) and screaming in the few short moments it would have taken a young man in prime condition to walk 30 feet?

    2. How the foal's body could have been buried beneath a dry stacked stone wall without disturbing it, or the ground and leaves, in the three minutes it took the rest of to reach the pasture?

    3. And most disturbingly of all: What could have done all that and in such a short amount of time?

It was so bad, investigators from Crane Naval Base were sent out after one particularly horrible animal incident.

  5. I was around 7 years of age and on my way home from school, walking alone and past a very old, uninhabited building some distance away, across a grassy field. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw movement and looking across in the direction from whence it came, I was startled to see a sheer gossamer curtain billowing eerily outwards from an open upstairs window in the deserted building. My neck hairs stood on end and a shiver shot down my spine. I momentarily froze, unable to move at all, but as soon as I could, ran away as fast as My legs would carry me. I stopped briefly to look back, but there was absolutely no evidence of what I had seen. The windows were all shut tight. It had not been a breezy day, either. I have never forgotten the experience, or how I felt at the time.

I haven't any really scary ghost stories...we have sounds and smells and movement out of the corner of our eyes...the feeling of always being surrounded by family...the creepiest thing that happens is the pounding on our front door. One night the pounding was on the side door and was just horrific. I looked through the blinds on the door and put on the light but no one was there (or running down the street laughing). Since then it's just one almighty pound on the front door and it's over.

The house I grew up in is in Curzon Park North in Chester and had been in my family since it was built in the early 1900s, so we have photos dating from many moons ago, and the riverside in Chester has never looked like that.

When I opened my eyes I noticed a huge pair of hob-nail boots jumping up and down in the middle of the room. When I told my Mum after she said that a giant of a man had lived and died in that room. He was known as....... FEET.

  12. No ghost, but perhaps a polterguist? I needed vanilla for a recipe and knew I had some in the cupboard (spice shelf). I hunted and hunted. I knew it was there somewhere. Couldn't find it. Took out ever single item, looked at it, put it down and eventually emptied the shelf. No vanilla. I put everything back. I turned away for a minute, turned back - the bottle of vanilla was front and center with everything else moved away to set it off. I nearly jumped out of my skin. Grabbed my camera, took pics, but didn't want to touch the thing for quite some time. I still get chills....

  13. I would have expected you to stick around to see if that was Andrew Lincoln lurking in the shadows.

    My Story:
I was alone in the house (except for our two black cats). I was lying in bed reading on the top floor of our very large 3-story house in the foggy hills of San Francisco. I suddenly imagined something passing to my left near the foot of the bed. When I turned in that direction, I saw a shadowy image of my sister (dead, by that time, more than 15 years). She was standing and calmly looking into my eyes. Within the split-second it took me to tell myself it was my imagination, I noticed both cats staring fixedly at that same spot near the foot of the bed. Just as quickly, they darted in terror from the room, nearly slithering on their bellies with their ears back. I looked at my sister and said, "Yeah, Dale, I'm doing alright." With her lips pressed together in a satisfied smile, she nodded her head gently and was gone. It made me believe in something -- even if it's the fact that the cats and I shared a vivid imagination.

    2. It's odd. As time passes, I find myself more and more incredulous. As if someone else were telling the story and I'm just humouring him. At the time, and for a number of years after, I couldn't shake the fact that both cats saw SOMETHING exactly where I saw her and it scared the daylights out of them. So, I guess, I think about it at this very moment, I do believe what I saw that night.

  14. I was changing schools so we had a huge bunking party with all my friends. We stayed in the shell of a house with a fireplace, no power and only lanterns for lights. We had told the normal ghost stories and someone needed to take a wee.

I went outside with them and while out we checked out the basement below the house. There was sheet iron leaning against the wall. We found an old pair of roller skates, the kind with keys, and let them rumbled down the tin. We heard the screams from the house and were delighted with our successful scare.

When we finished business and returned upstairs, every one knew it had been us. We counted heads and every one was there by the big fire place still nervously laughing about the scare.

Then we heard one skate roll down the tin. Then the other. Every one was there! There was no way the skates could have rolled down this metal with out assistance. I knew where I had left those skates!

The mystery was never answered. The skates are still around but not in the basement, the tin long removed. I find myself listening on a quiet night to see if it will happen again.

  15. Years ago, I sang in the Canterbury Cathedral and, during our preparation for the concert, stayed in a dorm on the King's School campus. The night of the concert, I ran back to the dorm to deal with laundry since I was leaving the following day. As I entered the stairwell, I heard the creaking floorboards and footsteps of someone walking down the hallway and climbing the stairs in front of me. When I reached the top of the stairs, I saw a shadow of the person turning the corner and I followed, however, just as I turned the corner, the noise stopped and I realized I was alone in the hall. I told a security guard about the experience and he said every guard on the property had experienced some sort of sighting, and his stories were much more interesting than mine! I think areas as old as Canterbury must have so many memories imprinted on them that you can't helput see flashes of the past periodically.

  16. I have at least ten good ones but I'll just mention that we co-own, with a friend, a small cottage on a bay on a barrier island in North Florida. No bridge there, no commerce. Just some houses and beach and woods and swamp. The little house we own definitely has a poltergeist and it seems to mostly show itself to me. I have never seen it but it is mischievous, especially when I am there by myself. It has moved books from a bedside table to behind the bed, it has moved a little cosmetic bag from a window sill INTO the toilet. It started a toaster oven all by itself. It sometimes turns out lights. And one day (and I swear, I saw this) it moved a notebook from a little kitchen bar right to the floor.
Yet I never feel threatened by it. Merely annoyed and slightly amazed. It seems to me to feel pissed off at my presence. Native Americans lived on that island thousands of years ago. We find their pottery in the bay and on the shore.

  17. My house was built in 1940 by a fellow who moved here from New Jersey, with his son. Their name was Amity. Mr. Amity built the house himself, even digging the basement by hand. The son, and relatives of the Mr. Amity's second wife, have all been by our house since we moved here in 1988. Eventually my sister asked if Mr. Amity wore coveralls, and the son and Mr. Amity's granddaughter both unburdened themselves of their stories of his ghost. The granddaugher, who we think is a bit off, is terrified of the old man. We only see him peering in windows, as if to be sure things are satisfactory. We last saw the son at least ten years ago, stopping by on his way to live in California. The granddaugter has never reappeared, fortunately. Knock wood; telling such stories can bring people to you front door.

      Ghost story

A man was recovering from an operation and to give him a complete rest he
had gone to stay at the home of his wife’s parents at their cottage in the country.

The cottage was set on a hill, near woodland.
It had a beautiful garden and a gravel path sweeping around the building.

One night, feverish but cold the man drifted in and out of sleep.
He woke briefly to hear the distinct sound of footsteps
      on the gravelled path outside.
He shivered with cold, not fear
as he saw the shadowy figure of a tall man by his bedside.
      A sudden warmth enveloped him
and he slept restfully for the remainder of the night.

In the morning the fever had gone and the man felt refreshed and better.
He thanked the gentleman of the house for the extra blanket
but the older man shook his head in amazement
as he hadn’t entered the room.

      The matter was easily forgotten and time went on with family gatherings;
birthdays, Christmases and times to enjoy family and friends.
It was a beautiful, happy place.

Sometime later the lady of the house was unwell
and had taken to sleeping in the spare room for the quiet
and to allow her husband to sleep while she tossed and turned in the night.
She was feverish and shivery all at the same time.

Late one night she heard footsteps outside on the path
and thought of her husband letting the dog out before settling the house for the night.
She couldn’t know that this task had already been made.

      Later while cold and aching,
the drowsy woman saw a tall, dark shape at the foot of her bed
she glanced at her small bedside clock.
Late for him still to be up she thought, but kind to check and add the blanket.
An immense warmth wrapped around her and she slept deeply and restfully.

The woman was feeling stronger in the morning so scolded her husband for being up so late.
But he had retired to bed some hours before having checked on her then.

Some years later the couple’s daughter met a historian who specialised in the area.
She found herself telling the story of her husband and her mother.
The man smiled simply and said,
“ Oh that would be John the Monk.
He was a healer in his lifetime and continues to be “

The cottage was situated on Monk’s Hill.

The man in the story was my father, the elderly couple my Grandparents.

  20. When we were in our teenage years my sister gave my a birdhouse jewelry box. When you open the little drawer the bird sitting on the perch would swing back and forth to the tune of "Love Story". But you had to open the drawer to set the bird and music to going. Unfortunately my sister died at the age from an asthma attack. I was having a particularly rough day and crying my eyes out missing her. I said out loud, Valerie, just give me a sign you're alright. The jewelry box started playing Love Story and the bird swung back and forth. It actually completed the whole tune and then stopped. I just stood there and watched. Mind you, the drawer had to be open for the tune to play. It was not. After it was done I said thank you and oddly enough felt much better.

  24. We bought a house in a brand new development outside of Phoenix, Arizona near a Yaqui Indian village in the 80's. The house was two stories and included a lovely fireplace in the living room downstairs. Moving day. We load our various boxes, and belongings in, get the beds upstairs and made and prepared to rest for the night. My husband went upstairs to sleep and I remained downstairs with my sister who was helping . It was close to midnight as we were sitting in the living room when all of a sudden we hear a baby crying. Now it's howling. WTF? Is it a cat? We are up frantically looking everywhere for the baby. I turn around and out of the fireplace wooshes not one,two or three babies but dozens. They are all screaming now as they fly around the room and up the stairs. My sister and I are a fuckin mess. I call my husband and son from upstairs. They come running down, we are stumbling over our words describing the glowing, screaming babies that just appeared out of nowhere. My husband and son say they heard nothing. Holy shit, what? So this happens every night for months. I am a wreck. My husband and son never hear the babies or see them, We put our home up for sale. Move out. Several months later there is an article in the local paper. The subdivision has been abandoned. No one lives there. The developers had built the homes on an ancient Yaqui cemetery for babies and children.

As it was only my husband and myself living in the house at the time, I figured it was him, coming to see what I was working on. I didn't hear his footsteps across the floor but I felt the movement of air, then he placed his hands on my shoulders. Without turning, I asked him what he thought of the mandala. He didn't answer, so I turned around. No one was there. I jumped up and ran into living room and my husband was sound asleep on the sofa, open book on his chest and his glasses a little cattiwompus.

  32. Over the years I've had some strange experiences, I was getting ready for bed one night and went into my lounge to turn the tv and light off and as i got to the door i became aware of someone sitting on the sofa.
I looked back and there sat a man although i could still see the sofa through him, I just shut the door.
For years when i've got up in the middle of the night to go to the toilet I would always here a conversation between two people in the hallway outside my bedroom but you could never pinpoint where they were.
Then one night i got up and just got to the hall doorway when a male voice as clear as day said "I Love you" the voices have been gone since.
My daughter has always spoke about a man and woman that would stand at the bottom of her bed in victorian clothing.
But i guess the strangest was one night i was laying in bed when i felt the other side of the bed go down like someone had sat on it, then i was woken in the middle of the night by what felt like someone sleeping next to me and an arm laying over me.
Even after all this i still find the living a lot more scary than the dead.

  36. We have lived in this old Welsh farmhouse for 27 years and experienced quite a few odd things - hearing footsteps coming up the stairs (including the footfall of my husband who was at that time in bed with me - my late m-in-law heard them too). There have been noises, smells, more footsteps, lights/computers/tvs going on and off and other electrical things but this happens less now our middle daughter has left home.

I was somewhat freaked recently when, on several occasions, my new food mixer suddenly turned itself on when it had been VERY firmly off (believe me, I made sure of this after the first time it did it) and about 10 days ago the cups from my husband's flask were suddenly airborne from where they had been on top of a biscuit barrel.

That I can just about cope with as there is no real scary feeling with all this (hope I'm not tempting fate here). Far worse was my one experience of a ghost proper elsewhere, in Breamore House in Hampshire. I had been there several times and knew it was supposed to be haunted but never felt any atmosphere or anything untoward. On this occasion, I was with my best friend, and we both seem to "pick up" on atmospheres. We somehow got included in a coach load of Dutch women who were visiting the house. They were very cheerful and noisy and full of fun. We went into one of the bedrooms - which I thought from a past tour, was the one where a dastardly murder had been carried out. I got as far as the doorway and it was like walking into a wall of hatred. The atmosphere was so thick it was like a jelly. I was out of there in a flash but my friend said she wasn't going to let a ghost keep her out of a room.

I wandered into the next room, which was a big double cube in shape, painted light blue, with lots of windows and light. I was on my own, as all the others were still listening to the Guide in the bedroom, my friend included. I moved across to look at an embroidery at the far end of the room, and my back was to the window.

As I looked at the embroidery, I felt an intense cold down my back. Blimey I thought, there's one heck of a draught in here - they need to sort the windows. I moved away, and the cold came with me, and began to penetrate into the backs of my legs and right into my body. It was a feeling I recognized from nightmares in my own house, where I was being overwhelmed by an entity. It was terrifying, and as I walked briskly away the Guide and party came into the room. I moved across to my friend and said, whatever you do, don't go near that embroidery at the bottom end.

However, the party gravitated that way and my friend was shunted towards the window. As I watched I saw her face took on a look of horror, and all the hairs stood up on her arms. She moved away and said, "You were right about that ghost" and the Dutch ladies, overhearing the word ghost, said "Ah, a HAUNT!" and pointed at my friends' arms with goosepimples and hair on end. So yes, I DO believe in ghosts. There are more things than we can ever explain.

    1. Your comment reminds me of a documentary that suggested ghosts were merely imprints in time of electrical energy
Often these houses ( like yours) lie on electrical energy related to underground water
      Thanks for this

  37. When my daughter was about 1 year old and learning to walk, I was showing her pictures in an old family album. I was naming who everyone was and lingered on a picture of my mom and my husband's mom I said "Grandma" a few times and she squirmed to get down and move on to something more interesting. As she toddled away from me she suddenly tripped and started to fall head first towards a raised hearth brick fireplace. In mid-fall her body made a complete right turn, 90 degrees from the projected fall! Her forehead missed the corner of the hearth. My mother-in Law had just died a year before she was born and since this incident I've always felt she was her guardian angel! (we covered the bricks the next day!)

  38. I do not think you will read this John, so, bugger all the ghosts and ghoulies. . . but if Robert Mitchum would like to freak me out he has my permission . . . but only when he looked like on that film, not all stiff faced as he was as he grew older. I should know better at my age but WHAT a man. Love Andie xxx

  42. I'm not sure if this qualifies as a ghost story, I'll leave it to you all to make up your own minds. About 20 years ago, when I was 19, I was seeing a soldier, and I was completely smitten. We were together for about a year, but we only saw each other for about a month in all that time, as he was posted overseas and never home for long. I was happy with this, being young and ridiculously in love, but he was about ten years older and wiser, and he ended the relationship as he thought it was unfair on me. I was heartbroken, and I never heard from him again. But.... Several months later, one night, I was woken up because he was kissing me. I felt the pressure of his lips, the texture, I could smell his aftershave, it was absolutely real, but of course there was no one there. I felt really disturbed by it, and I told my mother about it the next day. She thinks he died and came to say goodbye - he did have a dangerous job after all, so it's not unlikely. I don't know, and I don't think I want to know, either.

  43. We had a ghost kitty........We moved to CA from TX three years ago for a new job for hubby and after much searching decided to purchase a new house that was in the process of being built.... It took four months but we finally got moved in and settled...We own a black cat named Jinx ... and he likes to follow you in the bathroom and be petted while you are on the toilet .. i know.. go figure...Well while on the toilet i felt something tap my leg.. thinking it was Jinx i reached down to pet him...um...no Jinx... didn't think much of it... Then a few days later i was sitting at the desk at the computer when again i felt that tap tap... must be Jinx... reached down to pet him... no Jinx.... and this continued to happen the three years we lived there....
My husband left for work early and i would stay in bed... With my eyes closed i could hear Jinx walk across the carpet to the opposite side of the bed and then he would jump up... Only he never jumped up... I sat up in bed and looked for him...no Jinx.. even looked under the bed...no Jinx... What the heck? This happened over and over while we lived in that house....Ofcourse it only happened to me......I couldn't help but wonder if maybe a cat had gotten buried in the foundation or something during the build and maybe that was my ghost kitty....????? By the way we have since sold that house and moved to Arkansas and the ghost kitty did not follow me.... :) Happy Halloween John! Hugs! deb

  46. When I worked at the nursing home, dying patients often called to family members who had predeceased them, and they often saw the family members. A man dying of cancer said repeatedly that his wife was sitting in the chair across from his bed. I think she was there to help him with his journey. Another lady who broke her hip when she was 99 often spoke to her sister, who was sitting in the chair next to her bed--except no one was there. The charge nurse told the woman's daughter. She said, Oh, yes. Mama has always communicated with late relatives. For the record: Night of the Hunter is the most frightening movie ever.

    Love,

  47. I think the 'energy' thing is right John. I have had a couple of weird experiences and feel that stones and bricks and furniture soak up the emotions or passions of past events........makes me sound mental I know but who cares? and as for Night of the Hunter? one of my favourite films........

  48. I've posted an experience here before, but I've had a few One that always stays with me is, when a late teen, my BF of the time and I were offered the chance to cheaply rent a house that had been empty for many years. Being young, we had plenty of friends at a loose end and they came to help us clean up this very grubby old house and have a party while doing it. We all experienced odd things like lights being off that we were sure had been left on and such, and the back end of the house was absolutely freezing and spooky to go down to on your own, but we weren't to be put off. (Cheap rent!) We all beavered away and then collected in the kitchen to have a drinky to celebrate our hard work. We were all sitting there happily, when all of a sudden the window in the kitchen, one that had one of those bendy arms that you drop a pin into to hold it open at your chosen angle, suddenly began to swing back and forth back and forth back and forth, the pin thingy rattling across its holes but not going in, then stopped again as if it had never happened. The feeling we got at the same time, brrr, so malevolent! We all watched in horror, girls and guys both, and then we packed up all our cleaning stuff and left. We'd been told in no uncertain terms that the house (or its grumpy inhabitant) wanted to stay empty! We were in such a hurry we left our portable stereo there, and I had to go back and get it at a later date. I went in daylight, terrified, and got in and out of there as fast as I could! The house stayed empty after that until years later again, when it was bulldozed to make way for a new shopping centre. I wonder what happened to its ghost then?

  50. I have just finished reading all of these comments and I find them fascinating. I have a tale to tell - not a ghost story as such - but the weirdest coincidence I have ever experienced. I went jeans shopping with my teenage daughter. We were strapped for cash so went to a retail park and started by looking in Asda. Nothing. We then moved to New Look where my daughter found a pair that she absolutely loved - but they didn't have them in her size. I felt so disappointed for her - and me - as the next stop was the rather pricey Next. As we walked in I made a silent plea to whoever might have been listening to help us find something that my daughter liked. Off we went to the jeans section and would you believe that hanging in the middle of all the Next jeans was a pair of the New Look jeans that my daughter had loved? We looked a each other in astonishment and I found an assistant. I told her we had found the jeans hanging amongst their own and we really wanted them! She said that she couldn't sell them to us and to just take them!! I think of that incident every day trying to come up with an explanation - but can't.
