Post 2 Munich

I am waiting to get on the plane again...........we are in Munich
Managed to watch the awful SAN ANDREAS
Which drowned out the numerous babies in the main cabin......I sat next to the overly friendly and very camp Bertl who has just had a pneumatic week visiting his boyfriend in Manchester. His boyfriend is 24 and he is not a day younger than 50 ( though he insisted to me that he is just 40). Thank God he got off in Germany....I don't think I could have stomached the lurid details.
Apparently Bertl means Nobel in German......or so he told me.........
Hey ho
( btw ..and this is so true...I have just googled " old camp German" to find a suitable photo to illustrate  this post.....and all I came up with is an old picture of Auschwitz)

  1. It is not so good watching movies on planes. The details later are quite hazy. But then sometimes one really sticks in your mind.

  6. A few years ago on a Turkish Airlines flight, the touchscreen video display on the back of the headrest of the seat in front did not seem to work. I kept tapping away and eventually went bang, bang, bang with the heel of my hand. It did not occur to me that there was someone sitting there. The occupant turn round to me and in a Turksh accent quietly but authoritively said "touch it". Now, whenever it think about this lying in bed in the dead of night I still find it necessary to cover my face with my pillow.

  7. John, funny things (or people) just seem to follow you around, don't they? You must be a magnet for oddities! Hope you have an uneventful next leg.

  8. I have had two awful flights. One to South Africa and the man sitting next to me tried to read my book all the time and then asked me "Do you eat reindeer at Christmas"?? At which point I was saved by an air hostess. Hoe you have a wonderful holiday.

  14. A pneumatic week? Did they have a bad dose of the flu or were they drilling holes in the road for the council? You had best not tell The Prof about your intimate airborne relationship with Herr Bertl.

  15. Ah, Muenchen Flughafen! An airport I used to know so well - though I believe has been markedly expanded since I was part of its regular traffic. (And where I once had the dubious honour of being singled out by three or four Polizei from an entire departure hall full of travellers to have my luggage minutely searched! But I hold no grudges). Anyway you've long since left that hallowed terrain on reading this.
There's no shortage of film NOT to be viewed while in flight. Perhaps you can take a cue from 'Airplane' and send a message to the Chief Pilot asking him if he likes to look at pictures of naked men?

My admittedly slow-rusting knowledge of Deutsch can't make the leap from 'Bertl' to 'noble' (usually 'edel' in German, as in 'Edelweiss') but you weren't sure anyway (and it could be regional idiomatic).

Be all that as it may, you are now where you are.
    Happy landing(s)!

  16. Remember that movie "The accidental Tourist"? I think that's what it was called, anyway. The main character said that you should always pack a book when traveling - not necessarily to read it, but to give other people, who are just dying to tell you their life story, the impression that you are very busy.

Now, since I am German, I have to weigh in on the whole Bertl = noble issue. Ehhhhhhh, no. Bertl is just Bertl. Unless he got it all mixed up at some point and meant to say that Bertl is the abbreviation for the German name 'Norbert', which could sound like 'noble' when one slurres after a couple of airport cocktails.

  21. I have flown to Australia twice. Never again. It is very nice when you get there but by the time you have recovered you have to come home. Also Perth at any rate is more expensive than London, which I was not expecting. Lovely beaches, too may speed cops and a weird mix of the politically correct and the raving sexist. Interesting place. I believe they like cricket, ask them about the recent Ashes tour in UK.

  28. I have found that bad movies go right to airplanes. There they have a captive audience.

  29. Yes, the words "camp" and Germany never sound good.

  30. Wow, crying babies or Mr Chatty-Kathy who lies about his age. Air travel can make one feel like a captive audience, no?
