Boiled Fruit Cake

This afternoon I have finally caught up with blog reading.....I did this in between baking my biscuits and boiled fruit cake entries  for the flower Show and it was nice to read Tom's knocking shop Joke , hear all about Rachel's holiday, The weavers farm days and Yorkshire puddings trip to the theatre....but in the end I was a slave to  non stick parchment baking paper and a badly functioning fan oven.....Mary Berry you have a lot to answer for!

  1. I hope you are as generous with your fruit as you are with your Ls.

  2. Nothing to do with fruitcake (unless I am the fruitcake) but I meant to say... I have just returned from Wales.

Did you go to Kent just to avoid me?

I discovered that Cardiff Castle was appropriated long ago by a Scottish Marquis because he married a lass with Welsh properties to offer him, then the house of Bute eventually gave the castle back to the Welsh in the 1940s when it became too expensive to maintain (or something like that). How I admire my genes...

    3. Now I am wondering at what point on my long winding norhward journey home Cardiff ended and Scotland began. I was sure there were other places in-between, but I am, of course, an idiot.

With coffee in the afternoon, lovely.
Anne, I am almost the farthest I could be from you.
I live in the wild wild west in Tucson, Arizona next to the very porous border with Mexico.

    8. I also like fruitcake. My Gram made one nearly every year for Christmas. I never got her recipe, and the last year she was lucid, she told me it had gotten so expensive to get all the ingredients and no one seemed to care for it much anymore, she decided not to bother.

I suppose I should try making one myself.

  5. My DNA Dear NfA, it makes me what I am... a cheapskate, cynical, glum and conniving Scot (but admirable, of course).

    1. I liked Cardiff very much, following the recommendation of my son, who works in Cheltenham and visits Cardiff often. The stuff between Cardiff and the Brecon Beacons... no comment, and then it gets all lovely again until the gloom descends around Trelawnyd and remains until the English border. Albert is nice though.

    2. Maybe it was the North Wales weather. While further south Cardiff was about 22 degrees C and in glorious sunshine with not a cloud in the sky as we explored a wonderful parkland around the River Taff (I think), the glorious improvements that a Scottish family had made to Cardiff Castle and the pleasantly vibrant cafe and shopping quarter nearby. Even the Welsh people were ok.

    6. By the way, I am not surprised you have not visited Cardiff if you think it is 7 hours away. A mere 3 hours and 56 minutes the AA route planner advised me, but perhaps a Berlingo driven by your good self would take much longer. You should visit your capital, I suggest.

    7. Furthermore, from my village in Perthshire just south of the Scottish Highlands down to Gloucester, nearly where we stayed first night, was a mere 6 hours 33 minutes of driving. Do you actually reside on a different planet??

    8. You forgot the 56 minutes, which is nearly an hour. Not fast roads though. AA route planner times are fairly accurate, I find, not that I travel long without breaks, however (except between Cardiff and the Brecon Beacons).

  7. Back into the groove. I'm sure there was much catching up to do with the lovely villagers.

Many can only dream of living in such a nice place.

  12. With homemade fruitcakes you can do the fruits you prefer. Also the spices control and these are very good ....I like ones with a light color batter and lots of cherries in it. I smell a first place.

  15. I LOVE real homemade fruitcake but it MUST have almond paste and icing on top and down the sides, that's the best part, and hopefully your doggies wouldn't nibble.

  18. I have a Cardiganshire recipe for a boiled fruit cake which never fails and is a wonderful last-minute substitute for a Christmas Cake, as you would never know it was just made yesterday! It has a tin of crushed pineapple in it and is so moist and . . . . dammnit, I am going to have to make one again now!
