Eurovision 2015

The Eurovision Song Contest over recent years, seems to have morphed into a wonderful hybrid of professional showbiz extravaganza with a light show and laser technology that would shame  Steven Spielberg movie and a political rally for the world's campest audience.
Some of it just needs to be seen to be believed .
I have watched the semi finals in Austria with some renewed interest in the whole shebang, mainly because the BBC fronted the show with a wonderful sarcastic and playful Mel Giecroyc who should, in my opinion host the final show tomorrow night,. Eurovision  has found a kindred spirit in her.

Anyhow I think Serbia should win the contest as it's song " Beauty Never Lies"  ticks EVERY one of Eurovision's boxes

It has an uplifting message sung by a sassy underdog with a weight issue
It has flags
It has masks
It has the ripping off of clothes,
It has the stereotypical key change towards the end,
It has a camp, dance break,
It has air punching galore
It has lipstick, glitter make up
And  it has
an audience who nearly busts a collective bundle of blood vessels
in their excitement

Yes Serbia to win......

  3. It sounds like the perfect song to win.

I have finally persuaded Lovely Hubby that we need to have a Eurovision NIght this year. Alcohol, nibbles and avid watching for the duration, it's something I used to do with my younger son before LH came on the scene. The campest, nibbly, fun filled evening possible.... it just puts a smile on your face, and I love Graham Norton's wit. :-)

  4. Yes - I think you have picked a winner there John. If only she had a farting bulldog to accompany her and she would have nailed it!

  5. Sorry to disagree but Australia all the way with Guy Sebastian. First time OZ invited to enter. We will see!

    1. No, sorry I'm in Oz but Guy's song is not a patch on the Serbian extravaganza.

  6. Where's the National Pride then? UK to win surely?!
Actually you're right - useless as usual.

I haven't seen Eurovision since Bucks Fizz were trying to make their mind up. Now I know why I've been avoiding it. The only saving grace here is that the singer didn't take part in the whole clothes-ripping bit!

  9. I haven't seen any of the heats, but will watch tomorrow. This is a great Eurovision song isn't it!!!! All the right ingredients as you say, and not a bad song at all!!! She has a great voice and surely, ahem!, that is what is all about!! I wonder if we will get more than nil point!

  10. The best of all time Eurovision was the Olsen Brothers "Fly On The Wings of Love" and Jorgen is sooo easy on the eyes!

  11. Your description of the Serbian entry sounds like The Trelawnyd Annual Flower Show but without as much razzmatazz or oddly shaped vegetables.

  12. Saturday is the highlight of the year! I do scorecards, I do snacks, I do drinks. I think this year my daughter will get initiated - she's seven, she can stay up now. I'm rooting for Belgium, though. A bit of nationalism, just because Conchita can't win twice. (Last year even I couldn't support Belgium. I still listen to her song every week, while running. Love it!)

  14. I didn't want to wake you up, J.G., but regretfully (hah!) have to point out that you are SO wrong. I've heard all the songs at least four times now and Serbia's offering just doesn't cut the mustard, performer with 'embonpoint' notwithstanding.. The 'correct' winner this year is Estonia - that is to say, only if the U.K. doesn't take the honours with our brave, toe-tapping entry, (despite the unpatriotic carping and dismissal) but we all know our chances of winning are extra-slim at best.
Having put cards on table I have to say that in my own opinion this year's entries overall have been of a lower standard than some recent years.
Okay, I'm still a little sore that my number three choice, Denmark, didn't clear the hurdle. But my second, Austria, is still there with its automatic qualification so there'll be all to play for tomorrow night.
But Serbia? Take it from me, - no, no, no - NO!

    1. Elina looks rather dour but yes I liked Estonia's ditty
Serbia's camp as christmas entry is typical Eurovision
      Estonia is more commercial

    2. Tomorrow night I'm going to look for the 'camp' in Serbia 'cos I sure as hell missed it yesterday. Maybe my 'camp-dar' is not as finely tuned as yours is.

Btw: Did you notice Lithuania's M/M & F/F kisses last night? Blink and you could have missed them. And from Lithuania too!

Btw2: Striking a further discordant note, I found both Mel and Mills infuriating commentators, particularly the former. Get 'em off (for next year)!

    3. Okay, just watched Serbia yet again and I'll concede that there is some 'camp' there, and the song certainly has an in-yer-face' message - all of which could well play in its favour. But I still prefer several others over this one.

  15. WOW! They are good!
We can get this here on 'Out TV' but the 2 male hosts NEVER SHUT UP and we miss the 'live' commentary. Very frustrating.

    1. No worries there, Sol. Don't have to be a member of the EU to take part in Eurovision - see Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, Israel, Turkey, various former USSR countries and of course, for this year only, Australia.

  21. I'm liking UK's entry. I agree with you about Mel but Norton can be really funny with it too. Btw, Clooney's on his show tonight. I'm trying to stay awake that long! x

  23. I had dismissed Serbia before but the stage presentation really elevated it and I do think it has a good chance. I read that the composer is the same guy who wrote Conchita's winning entry from last year. Could we all have a whip around and have him write an entry for the UK next year? I like Ray's Estonia pick because it reminds me of the Dutch second place entry from last year. But I'll stick with my original picks of Norway and Italy - we shall see! Sadly I have a feeling that Russia my get it with their OK song but lots of terrified neighbours voting for them.

    1. I too have fears about Russia carrying it off yet again, helped along (as if they needed it!) by their entry performed third from last, while U.K. has the harder task of singing in 5th place.
Maybe we'll have needed to the Irish referendum result to have saved us from total despondency (IF it really does go the way as expected) - but I still reckon the British entry is a jolly good one, as I've said from the start - so yah-boo to all the nay-sayers.

  24. I love Serbia's entry. It's the only one I've heard though! I listened to Conchita Wurst speaking on Saturday Live Radio 4 a couple of weeks back. A rather gracious person, I thought. With a lovely speaking voice!
