Liv & Winnie

For the first time yesterday, I got to watch Winnie interact on a one to one with  small child and it was a revelation. With the weather fine, affable despot Jason, his wife, the even more affable Claire, and their two girls came down the lane for a walk. The girls are well used in coming into the field , so had a wander around with the hens, the sheep and the dogs in their own incredibly confident way.
The youngest girl, liv is around six, and is a little Bette Davis wrapped up in a small girl's body, so I watched her interaction with Winnie, who has studiously ignored every child she has ever met on her lead,  with some interest.
Like I said It was a revelation.
Everywhere the child ran, off Winnie would follow, her big goo goo eyes all bright and friendly and gentle.
There was non of the usual clumsy silliness  I have gotten used to since she arrived in Wales

When Liv would stop, so would Winnie, and strangely the big bulldog would spin around to playfully sit directly on the child's feet, before the two would gallop off around the field together.
In her past Winnie must have known and loved children...unfortunately this past remains a total mystery to me

The spectacle even surprised Claire who stopped, open mouthed, at the gate to watch the fun
Dogs and children.
They never fail to surprise you.

  1. If I didn't know better I'd be calling Children Services... they look like they're planning on having her for dinner! No... not really... look at their eyes and the "smile" on their face.... they're having a blast!

    1. I knew she was generally placid and accepting
But her obvious affection for little people was a first for me

    1. Winnie came from a breeder of bulldogs
As far as i know she had two litters
But after she had her pyppies she was no longer a viable bitch..
I suspect she was loved dearly but then she couldnt " contribute" to the home bills..
      Thats when i got her

  10. Having many dogs where I don't know their past relationships with children I have to be careful, but like you, I've been pleasantly surprised at times. However, our girl Sheba lived with kids her first year, and they must have tormented her. Because she is the most gentle of Goldens with adults, but turns into Cujo and will eat any kid in just one bite!

  12. The photo at top made me uneasy, but then the story became a delight. Little children should visit more often.

  15. It's lovely to watch unexpected interaction isn't it :-)

We were worried about Rosy with the children during our hillside get together, the youngest was under two, but she was very soft and loving with them, she used up all her patience on them though and gave Suky a good telling off later to get it out of her system.

  16. Kindred spirits! A memory of when I was a kid just popped into my head. My friend had a Jack Russell who was very fussy about food and would not eat if the fancy took her. This would go on until my help was needed, I only had to put a foot over the threshold and the mutt would scoff its grub and lick the bowl! Strangely I never remember eating dog food. x

  18. That photo is hilarious -- though it seems unlikely, from what I've read on your blog, that Winnie could get that high off the ground!

It's cute that kids awoke something in Winnie that you had never seen before. Makes me wonder about the hidden potential in all our animals!

  19. Winnie needed a female/child to relate to. She is so loving and childlike herself.
