A Life With Little Legs

George is Chris' dog
It was never planned that way,
Its just that their personalities dovetail perfectly with each other.
Like Maddie's personality did before him.

Scottish terriers are fiercly loyal, mistrusting of strangers,
aloof, stubbon and love routine.
They prefer to lie next to you rather than on you
and in George's case, they love bedtimes, even though
they have to be lifted from the floor by hand every night at 9pm.

While the Welsh terriers and Bulldog spend most of their time sucking
physical and emotional warmth from me 24/7
George is happy sitting quietly next to Chris each night
No fuss, no emotional romping, and no demands more than
a space amongst the cushions.
the odd tickle around the chops
and the slightly sad realisation that he is firmly last in the pack's pecking order

If GOING GENTLY was ever a feature film,
George would win the oscar for best supporting actor.

  1. What a sweetie your George seems to be! My mother-in-law's husband loves Scotties and his adult daughter owns one named Buster. Just this weekend we went to visit and we heard a great story about Buster.

My MIL has recently been diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia. One of the worst problems she's had so far has been frequent falls. Last week Buster was visiting with his family and my MIL fell, again, and cracked her collarbone. Buster ran over to her, then ran to her husband (as if looking for help) then went back and laid down beside her until they got her up. They said he stayed close to her for the rest of their visit, as if to protect her. What a good boy he was! Her husband says he always had Scotties when his kids were growing up and they're wonderful family dogs.

  4. My Dad always loved Scotties, (and vice versa) and the Professor's personality sounds rather like his. Seems the two 'types' just go together.

    2. I hope that does the trick. Bloody other dog. I wish people with skittish animals would learn to keep them on the lead. Hope she heals soon.

    1. Simone...will do......William as you may guess is the " gentleman" of the pack. He is, in essence , the sweetest and benign dog we have ever owned

  9. George is smart. He gets 100% of the attention from Chris rather than 1/4 from you.

  11. One can only hope, wistfully, that there will be a Going Gently the Movie. I, unfortunately, have three strong characters who have all claimed me. It is a bit much at times.

  12. Gorgeous George !
Everything you wrote is very true and I think more so with the females.
They are pragmatic and very Zen. They know ever thing but really don't care and are not at all conceited.
They are just happy dogs and love their family with one definite favorite. Watson is my sons while thehamish is mine.
Dr. Watson is the sweetest loving most mellow dog I have even know while thehamish is just plain nuts.
They have the shortest legs attached to the biggest hearts.
    I love my Scotties.

    cheers, parsnip

  14. I wanted to blubber until I read the above comment about George getting 100% of Chris' attention - now I simply admire a dog who can figure that out!

Also, dogs - and people - with little legs don't have to work so hard to reach stuff on the floor. Not such a bad life :)

  15. Routine.. so true! Our Fitzgerald sits on the back of the couch each night and watches out the window for each of us to come home then arrooo at us when we come in the house. They can be so fiersome when confronted, but are really just the most loveable little creatures..

  19. "Scottish terriers are fiercely loyal, mistrusting of strangers,
aloof, stubbon and...and they love bedtimes."

This sounds uncannily like me. Can Scottie dogs and Scottie people share genes? We all come from the same origins ultimately, after all. I would also prefer to lie next to people rather than on them (my good lady excepted, when the mood is right).
