Bad Service

We went to collect our wedding rings yesterday afternoon.
Picking them out was a delightful experience thanks primarily to the sterling efforts of the saleswoman who, quite rightly made a big fuss of us.
Expecting a similar experience, we stood in front of a tired looking frump at the counter, who emptied the plastic bagged rings with a plop .
It didn't bode well.
The woman then launched into a rather depressing and monotone list of dos and donts before suggesting that my ring was not perhaps the best choice for a nurse to pick given the amount hand gel I may use . She also criticized the fact that we chose less robust rings ( we both hate chunky rings ) Which was the icing on the cake.
She made the whole thing feel rather lacklustre and I immediately wondered if her sales pitch would have been any different if a straight couple was standing before her.

I took a step back, knowing fully what was about to happen and let Chris give her both barrels.Which he did with all the killer instinct of a shark eating a tuna
Now Chris seldom looses his cool. But bad service is something that will get both of his Roger Moore eyebrows lifting at the same time.
In a cool voice he smartly told the woman that her attitude stank , and all she had done was to take the shine out of a potentially joyful experience.
The woman then made another mistake
She started to argue back
I tried to give her a look of " you silly bitch, say nothing more"- you don't know who you are dealing with
But it was too late
The  full , just fury of an articulate PhD was unleashed in its entirety
Heads turned, and the shop went incredibly quiet as the woman silently wrapped the rings up with a big bow.
" It was a pleasure to meet you" she said finally handing me the rings in a desperate ploy to regain some control of the situation.
I let Chris have the last word
" well it wasn't a pleasure meeting you"  he replied loudly before we swished out of the shop......

Hey ho

  1. I liked your description of Chris. I also wonder if she'll go home and contemplate where she went wrong? Or will she just write it off as a couple of grumpy customers who wouldn't yield to her supposed superior knowledge? Damn, I wish you had to go back for something else now just to get a sequel.

One so rarely hears the word swished now. I am so pleased Chris swished. There was a lot of swishing around when I was younger. Bah on the salesperson for spoiling what should have been a terrific moment.

  4. I had a very snotty sails assistant telling me in a jewellery shop we have used for years that " I'd be better off going to Joe Bloggs high street " and " Did I know anything about diamonds ? " When I was looking for a tiny diamond necklace for my daughter's 18th birthday present.

I told the story to a friend who just happened to work at the jewellery shop & later received a sort of apology from a girl who didn't think she was the one who'd said this but sorry just incase she was !!! I think she was the shop owner's up herself daughter. I've never shopped there again & bought my daughter's 21st birthday present in another jewelers.

    2. Perhaps he should include in it a few comments about the pleasant service you received from the girl who sold you the rings in the first place ? It seems that mostly we don't bother to tell employers about good service from their workers, just about the bad stuff. Positive reinforcement in the workplace might have more salespeople thinking about how they approach customers to make the shopping experience one that they would be happy to repeat on another occasion.

  12. Bitch indeed! No need for such rudeness, and anti-Gay shit, does she not like being employed???

Reminds me of when I worked at a large hospital in Nottingham, it had a Hairdressing salon. I went in my lunch break to have it cut and styled for a special 'do' that evening. It looked ok but, when I got back, the Sister said, "It's a right mess at the back, go back and get him to do it properly!". I did and got nothing but, "We are so busy, what do you think I am, Superman?". For the very first time, I came back with, "But I PAID for Superman!". I was ushered into a chair and got the best cut I've ever had! Needless to say, I NEVER went back and told everyone!

  15. I can't stand bad service and would definately have responded like Chris on this occasion. I've had a variety of jobs but my main employ was as a manageress with John Lewis in one of their department stores. Rising through the ranks from a lowly start as a trainee we were always taught that the customer is always right!!! And at all times whatever happens you are polite and efficient in your dealings with
them. This was a while ago and I think standards have slipped everywhere somewhat but I for one always expect to at least be treated in a courteous manner.

  32. What a bitch! Surely when you do that job you know you're going to be dealing with people preparing for one of the most important days of their lives and should be suitably joyful and pleasant. I so hope the rest of your preparations are much more pleasant. xx

  33. Good for Chris - can i please borrow him next time I have bad service? And do you need lessons to swish - I'm afraid I'm more like Miranda and would probably trip up as I left. My Mum had bad service at Next recently. She wanted to buy a dressing gown and they wouldn't let her try it on cause it was tied up with a ribbon. She had to bring it home and on getting home found the security tag was still on. I told her to complain on Facebook (she hates complaining) and she not only got an apology but also a £35 voucher. She's learning that a complaint may be worthwhile. What's it got to do with the saleswoman if you've chosen an appropriate ring - it's your wedding and your choice - Grrrrrrrrr.

  40. Good for you both. Here in the states, some couples are experiencing bad service and negativity because of the whole gay marriage controversy. They just need to get used to it. It blows my mind that a store, in the business to make money, would treat a whole new group
of custom of potential customers like this. Sigh.

2nd Man would react much like your Dr. Chris.

Congrats by the way, so excited to watch your wedding events unfold. We are waiting for the Supreme Court to make its decision in July that, hopefully, will legalize it across the entire United States. Probably this time next year, we'll be in the same place as you are now!

  42. Good for Chris! Our shopping experience for wedding rings was just awful, and I got very loud as well. I think my raised eyebrows may have touched my hairline. 43. I am fairly terrible about confrontation; my voice goes wobbly and I am apt to cry, so I admire those who can keep their cool. But once, just once, I took on a manager for treating her clerk like crap. I asked to see her privately, told her that she had been mean and rude to her assistant, and walked out, smiling at her assistant on my way. I was so pleased that I hadn't collapsed into a snivelling heap. Chris sounds like a force to be reckoned with!

Perhaps it is time for her to move on. And if her stinky attitude was because you are two men getting hitched, clutch the pearls and suck it up sister, the world has gone forward without ya.

  47. If she sounded like a twat, and acted like a twat... she's a twat, and deserved everything Chris gave her. I must say, you shattered his Roger Moore image a bit with your reference to swishing. I'd always pictured him in a suit, flaying students and idiots (essentially the same thing) with an ice cold tongue but now I see him as more of the Errol Flynn/Tyrone Power sword-bearing type, with only that lone eyebrow to remind me of the Roger Moore days.

I guess this now makes him a swishbuckler.

Taking the joy out of anyone's day is a crime which deserves two Chris barrels... but now you have all these funny/supportive/clever comments to think of. Should brighten your memories a bit. =)

  49. Can I just quickly share a not entirely funny story - I own a craft shop and I am quite opinionated, alas, and sometimes I give my opinions to customers. Free, of course. One of my opinions is that Dylon dye is not anywhere near as good as iDye.
Anyway, I was helping a lovely gentleman choose the right product - after giving him $2 for his parking and we get on so well, and it is not the first time he had shopped with us, and he said, "I'm so pleased you bought this shop, you are so much nicer than the old owner" Hmm, they were really nice people and I have to defend their honour thinks I, "Oh? What makes you say that?" I inquire gently, "My wife tells me the last owner was really rude! She told my wife that Dylon was crap compared to idye" Oh my, I had to confess that it was me as the previous owners didn't sell iDye and would NEVER have used such language!! I apologised profusely to him and begged that he pass my apologies onto his wife for my terrible language. He thought it was very funny actually, I suspect it came down to two alpha, opinionated females stepping unintentionally on one another's toes!

She might be giving you right advice about the kind of rings and all. But after someone has made their decision, and gone through with it, she should have kept quiet on the issue.

It is perfectly fine to judge others. That saleswoman might be homophobic, and that is all right by me. What is NOT fine is that she cannot let her opinions affect her job. Or, she should find another job. Opinion is the new religion.
