The Good

The image of the Muslim bride placing her wedding bouquet on the Sydney memorial for the two Australians killed in the Martin Place seige was, I guess, pure gold to the newsmakers from across the globe.
But it remains something more than that.

For It underlines the good

  1. I completely believe that people are good, it's just that we sometimes stop seeing it until there is a huge contrast

  2. One message that the Cairns community is trying to get out after losing 8 young lives this week is that GOOD will come from the tragic loss.

  3. That is a touching image. It's funny how so many in the West ascribe the views of a small number of fanatics to millions and millions of innocent people. It's like assuming that all Christians think like the Rev. Fred Phelps.

  4. That is a great picture John. I hadn't seen it before. She may not have understood the significance of her gesture but hopefully it will have done a lot of good. It is far too easy to bracket people together. Too often I hear sweeping remarks about Muslims or "Pakis". Americans or "The French". I detest that kind of facile, racist pigeon-holing.

    1. She understood what she was doing, according to local news she was nervous about it and did it anyway, which makes it all the more meaningful

  5. A nice gesture of sympathy and grief. The sheer quantity of flowers shows how many people were deeply affected by the siege.

Strange that we're still not being told exactly how the two Australians died. There seems to be a news blackout.

    1. It has been widely reported that the cafe manager was shot by the gunman, i heard one report that seemed never to be repeated, saying that the woman was killed in crossfire. It will all be subject to investigation before we really know

  6. There is an anti-Arab sentiment around now which is even eclipsing the pre-911 anti-American sentiment, and I feel genuinely sorry for the 99.9% of the rest of the devout Muslims, which has nothing to do with their spiritual rules and regulations.

If there can be any good to come out of the massacre of the Pakistani children, it is that it may harden the resolve of the Pakistan government to eradicate the extremist murderers that they have been turning a blind eye to up until now.

    1. I expect it is against their human rights to be eradicated.

  7. Yep, pure gold. Not enough of that in the news.

  8. Such goodness and optimism and hope is wonderful....I'm a pessimist and the state of this world and the people in it make me despair...but sometimes images such as this remind me that hopefully good will prevail over evil.

  9. Yes. That is all. Just...yes.

  13. Such a lovely gesture is not something we would necessarily see here in the US and that makes me sad. But I can be cynical so maybe I just have to have my faith in humanity restored by a picture such as this and believe it would happen. Thank you for sharing.

  15. And we need to underline the good as much as possible in this bloodthirsty world.

  16. She did more for Muslims, and the Islamic faith, in that one action, than the press globally have done in the last ten years.

  17. Yes I thought this too John - we must all think of the good things, not the bad.

  19. Such a brave couple. Also in Australia a pubowner recently put up a sign saying 'No Muslims'. I know which people I would prefer to know...

  20. You're right...and most are good. Good news deserves more media attention, people learn by example.

there is too much bad otherwise !!

  23. It is a nice gesture John. I think people in the West are very worried about what terrorists will do next. Peace on Earth for everybody this Christmas.

  24. I notice something that maybe most people overlook. That outfit is a perfect blend of Western and Muslim traditions. This woman is absolutely an Australian. And a Muslim Good on her.

  25. I consider myself to be extremely fortunate; I live in a multi-cultural town and see the good every day; I live next-door to the good, I travel on buses driven by the good, I use shops owned by the good, I worked and studied alongside the good and my daughters are friends with the good.
They're ordinary folk; getting on with their lives, doing their best, loving their families and they're the majority. If only everyone could see that.

  26. Yes it did make headlines as did the pictures of Tori's father walking around with different religious leaders.
If only a small amount of good comes from these tragedies.

  27. Beautiful gesture. I, too, believe there is a huge amount of good in the world. The "news" is mostly about the bad and it can start to seem like that's what is predominant in the world at large, but it's just that we hear about it more.

  29. Was an amazing sight to see all the floral tributes left for the two victims. They have today been removed to be clean composted and used in permanent memorial for Tori & Katrina. Both funerals were held today.
