Mostyn Hall

Just three miles north East of Trelawnyd lies the historic country house Mostyn hall. The 15th Century house is a private seat of the latest Lord Mostyn who is 29 years old and the 13th richest man in a Britain under the age of 30.
The house has been opened to the public for a few weeks this year for the very first time, so, after a glowing report from my sister who had a guided tour of the Hall last week.I drove up to have a look for myself.
It was a fascinating hour out of my day. With only 8 of us on the tour, we had time to look at Charles The first's death warrant signed by Oliver Cromwell ( Oliver P)', learn all about the flamboyant Savage Mostyn who was responsible for the design of the modern sailor uniform!
and notice the cans of coke almost hidden away on the drinks trolley in the library.
As usual with these ancient family homes of Britain, the interest was not only in the grand public rooms which were a real delight, it was the quick glimpses of the 1970 avocado bathrooms which gave the whole visit a grounding in the normal

A painting of Mostyn hall's delightful library

  1. What a lovely old pile. I have to drive two hours and pay through the nose to visit our local chateau, Biltmore. A very commercial estate today, and not a single avocado or harvest gold fixture in sight.

  3. Savage Mostyn? Hmmmm, flamboyant, as you say - with that camp hand on hip pose, the other hand ready to catch the cannonball as it's fired.

And (of course!) you meant Charles 1st rather than James.

      Savage never married!

    2. The penny's just dropped. That 'Savage' was obviously a case of irony. Slow me!

  4. That would be Charles I. His dad James died with his head intact a long time before Cromwell was on the scene.

  5. Avocado baths and tins of coke eh? Under the skin (and sans bank balance) we are all the same aren't we? We only had our avocade bath taken out about five years ago when my blackouts meant I could no longer take a bath but had to have a shower.

  9. There was a PBS series about some of those grand old houses in England. I guess it was a reaction to the Downton Abbey craze. I loved looking at those houses. They were probably ostentatious in their time, but now they seem a labor of love. I think it's wonderful their owners have found it worthwhile to preserve them. They don't do that here, they tear down old buildings and build condominiums.

  10. Sounds like a good place to visit. The young Lord Mostyn owns around half of the property in Llandudno I've heard.

Nice that he's let some of it out so that we are about to get a Prezzo .... yay .. I'm happy :-)

  17. Mostyn is the name given to a man with a big cock. Justin is the name for a man with a small one. As you can tell, I am now being alerted to other people's posts.

  18. A smaller version of where I work.Sounds like the National Trust is involved if the house has been recently opened to the public. They have to do that once a year and will probably apply for grants to get rid of the avocado bathrooms. I've got 'housemaid's knee', an occupational hazard of my job - I'll be like Mrs Overall soon!

  19. Wow. And I think it was Deborah, then Duchess of Devonshire, who first starting opening up homes and gardens as a fund-raiser. And if I lived there I would go. Often.
