Heaven

Today's earlier blog seemed a little serious
So I will balance it with a little bit of luxurious frivolity
With Chris working away, I was only going to have a bagel for tea
But Val & Peter from Anchor house
Called round and dropped off a cannon ball sized , bespoke black pudding scotch egg
from the Hawarden Estate farm shop

It was bloody lovely!

  4. You will never lose weight John - but does it really matter when faced with that on a plate?

  6. Very nice. I like Scotch eggs too but have never dared to say in case I got told off by someone. I liked my mum's homemade ones best and cannot make them like she did. I tend to go for the deconstructed ones these days, a sausage and a hard-boiled egg and salad cream. I am not keen on the supermarket ones. P also likes them a lot so I have to buy them for him though. xx

  7. Now my lot expects me to whip up a batch! It's 26C today. Not happening.

I'll have to do it next month though, my sons godfather is coming and it's part of his visit.

  9. It's like two yellow eyes looking at you. All that face needs is a pork sausage for a mouth and a vine tomato for a nose. And may I say that the long comment just above this one is a load of bollix!

  10. John, you seem to really like those scotch eggs. For us Americans, would you be so kind as to tell us what's in a scotch egg and why is it called "scotch" egg?

    1. A Scotch egg consists of a shelled hard-boiled egg, wrapped in a sausage meat mixture, coated in breadcrumbs, and deep-fried. Scotch eggs are commonly eaten cold, typically with salad and pickles.

From the Telegraph (Feb 2011) see the rest of the article below

The Scotch egg’s origins are obscure. The exclusive London provisioner Fortnum & Mason claims it invented the portable snack for rich coach travellers in 1738. “The eggs would have been smaller in those days,’’ says the company’s archivist Dr Andrea Turner. “They would have been pullet’s eggs rather than hen’s eggs, and the meat would have been gamier, like a strong Victorian pâté.’’

She believes that the eggs then filtered down the social ranks, first becoming a Victorian savoury using cheaper meats, and finally arriving at the mass-produced egg served in the pubs, cafés and at picnics in second half of the last century.

An alternative theory, propounded by Annette Hope in her book A Caledonian Feast, claims that the Scotch egg evolved from Nargisi Kofta, an Indian dish that is also made from minced meat and a boiled egg.

    2. So, nothing Scotch about them, eh? Unless it's because they pair exceptionally well with that liquid commodity of the Highlands, perhaps. You should give that a try and report back to us.

  11. No, no, no. I would have definitely gone down the bagel path. Love that your friends gave you this treat though. And the more you eat of them the less there are in the world to confront me. Which is a good thing.

  13. I must have a go at making a veggie version one day. We have lots of lovely little Pekin Bantam eggs that would make lovely Scotch Eggs.

You've got some nice friends and neighbours :-)

  14. With a bit of genetic modification, you could get a brood which laid Scotch Eggs as a matter of course.

The outlay might be a bit prohibitive, though.

  16. Don't you ever worry that your scotch egg will be fertilised and a tiny redhead in a kilt will be curled up inside it???
