George - the boy next door

George, the Scottish terrier is often seen as the " poor relation"  amongst the dog pack
It has to be said that he is the lowest in the pecking order
He IS the least demanding of all of the house pets
And he is the one that has never caused us any concern in the seven years he has been with us
He is the dog version of the boy next door.
Yesterday, I took the dogs for a walk on the railway line in Dyserth
And as usual I let George wander off on his own as I took the other dogs on their leads along the walkway.
After a short time we came across a group of a dozen or so elderly men with learning difficulties , who were out walking hand in hand with their carers, and after we passed them I looked back to check what George was up to
Amid a chorus of friendly chatter ( but no attempts at physical contact) the Scottish terrier was obviously enjoying himself, and from 25 yards in front , I watched as the group ambled forward with George trotting energetically in the middle of them, head up, tail wagging, and mouth smiling.
The men around him chatted away to him about nothing as they walked, and with typical good nature he bounced along , savouring the banter
It was a moment that would give you a small lump in the throat if you saw it.

It was almost as though George knew that he was amongst friends

  10. George is an empathy! What a gift he is. You must be very proud and we know he's not really at the bottom of the pecking order.

  16. What a great wee dog! I witnessed a similar incident this morning whilst visiting a friend, her son is severely compromised by MD and he was leaning forward stroking their lovely crossbreed farm dog. The dog did all in its power to lean into the stroke so as not to cause the son undue hardship in his action. And the dog was making eyes at him all the time he was doing it. It was a very touching scene, so much so I had to leave the room and clear my throat and wipe my eyes. Animals just know..... don't they!

  26. Who's the little cutie-pie then? (I hope that what looks like an incipient smile doesn't turn into a snarl. It's on the edge of something.)

I love the way in which dogs, unless they have been trained to act otherwise, tend to give strangers the benefit of the doubt and to see everyone as a potential friend. It's their non-judgmental attitude that wins me over every time.

  28. What a lovely boy, give him a big kiss from me, its the little simple things that make all the difference in my opinion, they are no doubt still thinking and talking about him now.

  29. He's absolutely adorable.

It's always the ones that cause the least fuss and go through life quietly that suddenly surprise us with their endearing ways. It's just as though they are so comfortable in their own skin and chilled, they find happy moments when they want to and delight us when we spot them.

Lovely George, and his name suits him to a tee.

  42. George has always been my favourite. I did think it was because he can look so beautifully bizarre in the wind but now I know it is because he is an absolute gem!

  43. John, I deleted my comment because on thinking about it I realised that the wording of it could be misconstrued. What I meant was that scotties often get a bad press as being irritable and rather snappy whereas I think they are one of the lovliest and kindest dogs - trust a scotties to be the one to make friends with such a group of happy people. I have worked most of my working life with people with learning difficulties of some kind and know that any act of kindness towards them is always doubly appreciated.

  44. How discerning, George is my absolute favourite even if just because he looks so cute in the wind!
