Master Bedroom

This is my third favourite Andrew Wyeth's painting entitled Master Bedroom
To me the dog looks old and frail.......it's a painting that always makes me a tad emotional

Lucky I don't " do" emotional romps on New Years Eve either
Am working night shift tomorrow night..........I have never liked New years Eve since 1989 it must be said
My Father and a good friend of mine , newspaper photographer Ian Parry died tragically a couple of days from each other......around new year Eve almost 24 years ago

Since then, I have never really had the stomach for it all

  1. Perhaps his master died recently..the dog is sleeping where his master used to lie..trying to remember his touch..his voice.

That is what I was thinking....that he is curled up there trying to capture that last little bit of comfort.

  2. My lot always look like this when they sneak off to our beds after sneaking food from us all then farting on the pillows!
Not a nice time of year for you, remember the good times.
    Much love. X

  3. My Dad died 3 days before my 30th birthday. I forgot it was my birthday that year, and haven't 'celebrated' one since. Like you I don't have the stomach for it. You have my sympathies - I hope you manage to get through it okay.

  6. My dad died on Memorial Day (a day during May to honor those killed while in the military). I always dread Memorial Day, so when the most recent one approached, I got in touch with Willy Dunne Wooters and asked if we could have lunch together. At that point, we'd communicated online only a little. We met at a restaurant in my neighborhood. He walked in and I fell in love when I saw the smile in his eyes.

    Love,
    Janie

  7. The dog on the bed looks a lot like my darling old boy"Dillon" who was put to rest in June aged around 16. I had him for just over 11 wonderful years. You do seem to have the gift of making me cry! Sorry that new year is a bad time for you. X

  8. Adore the print. I am sorry for your feelings around new year. I hope work distracts you but 2014 is one of your best.

Love the blog, you are my morning read, cup of tea in hand and dogs next to me on the sofa.

Sorry about the sad memories. :-(

I did enough partying in my youth. My son and I watch giggling Anderson Cooper on CNN. Hope he's back this year.

    2. 2nd Man and I LOVE Anderson and Kathy. It's become 'our' tradition for NYE, ha. Glad to hear others like it too.

Some times of year are best gotten through quietly and efficiently. I feel the same way about the month of October as you feel about New Years.

  12. I know exactly how you feel, John. My dad died very suddenly on new years day 1977. Although it's 37 years ago, for me new year celebrations always bring a feeling of sadness and regret for a life cut short - he was only 49 and left a big gap in my family's life......

  14. My Mom died the day after Christmas.... and I always think that she "waited" until the day after Christmas so that all her kids, grandkids and great grandkids would not think of Christmas in a sad way. but then, my Mom was practically a saint... So... instead of feeling sad for my loss, I just marvel that she gave us all another good day. Maybe it's just one of those glass empty/glass full kind of things?

  15. I always find being busy to be the best medicine for sad times. I like to think the dog is enjoying his master's spot, much as my English Pointer likes to do.

  16. How coincidental that you feature a Wyeth painting today. Only this morning a friend mentioned him and I Googled his paintings. I have to confess that the ones I saw seem cold and 'dark'; I prefer strong sunny colours which make me happy. This 'Bedroom' one makes me feel sad.
My own Dad died on 27th December, suddenly and unexpectedly, so Christmas has sad connotations, but for the sake of those around me I don't mention it; it's enough that I think of my Dad with love and good memories. I am retired now so I can't avoid celebrating Christmas by working as I used to, but I hope it works for you. xx

  17. I don't like it either. All that noise and drinking and unkept resolutions... plus I can't stay awake past ten o'clock.

  18. I know what you mean about not being able to enjoy certain holidays because of memories. My beloved father died 4 weeks ago, the evening after Thanksgiving Day. That used to be my favorite holiday but I don't think I'll be feeling quite the same about it from now on. :(

  19. I've lost people i've loved over the holidays, too. It just makes it harder sometimes, although i'd know they'd want me to enjoy myself. Some years i do, and some years, i just can't. This has been more of a can't year.

  20. I always try to stay up for Jools's new year TV bash, but we're an hour ahead of the UK, and it's just too late.

  21. I'm amazed at how many people lose loved ones at the holidays. I too lost my Dad on New Years Eve, suddenly. He got home from work, laid down to take a nap and never woke up. The way we all might want to go but probably the hardest most unexpected way for the rest of the family. NYE hasn't been the same since.

Plus, here in the states anyway, there are just so many crazy drivers on the road, it's dangerous too. Better to just stay in and laugh with Anderson and Kathy.

All our best to you, and everyone.

  22. The picture is a sad one, Jack sleeps on the bed when DH is out of town and mourns for days. I get the "Holiday Blues", have never cared for them much. Working is a good way to get your mind off of sad memories. (Besides, I think they appreciate a "volunteer")

  23. We also watched this programme about Wyeth. Not being arty folk, we'd never heard of him but we absolutely loved this programme and his paintings. Our dogs would be up on the bed too given half a chance!! but there is a stairgate across the bedroom door while we're out. I think they like to be close to our smells (even the bad ones) when we're away from the house.

My dad walked out on Christmas Day and my mum hates Christmas so I find it a hard time of year. I make an effort for my son's sake because I don't want him associating Christmas with bad feeling. Sometimes best to keep busy when times are difficult John. This time of year will soon be over. Take care.

  24. I caught up with Michael Palin's program about Andrew Wyeth after you mentioned it. My favourite painting is " Around the corner "

I think of my dad a lot on November 11th the date he died & he was a military man through & through.

  25. i dont normally care about new years eve but this year i'm already feeling mid-life crisis-ish so it seems like a huge failure to be at home with the telly. oh well, life is peaks & troughs, eh?

  26. I like this painting John especially of the light coming through the window onto the bed and the dog lying on his master's pillow. I am sorry that this time of year holds sad memories for you. I am not keen on new year's eve and I am always apprehensive about it for no particular reason! We will soon be into a fresh new year and can focus on the good times to come. x

  27. I dislike new year's eve as well for very different but just as upsetting reasons. Andrew Wyeth is one of my favourite painters, there is so much pathos in his work.

  28. My sympathies for your sad memories, John. I hope you get through this night. Love the painting especially because of the dog! xxx

  29. So sorry for your losses. Holidays really do bring the best and worst with them.
Wyeth is fabulous and I find this particular painting sad yet, oddly comforting. XO
