Maga's Daughter

Watching tv this evening , I was reminded of one of my most favourite pieces of art.....I have blogged about Christina's World by Andrew Wyeth before.....which is was a painting that captured my heart and my imagination when we visited MOMA in New York many moons ago but it is Wyeth's 1966 portrait of his wife Betsy that really takes one's breath away
Enjoy

  4. andrew found his wife looking through a trunk of old clothes and when she put this hat on, she blushed and that was the way he wanted to paint her. magda's daughter. it is one of my favorites of his. i used to live by the wyeth's and i would see andrew all the time and drive by his gorgeous house. i knew where his studio was too which was quite a local secret.

    2. Yes, I know, and no derision or criticism was intended at all. I like all sorts of other stuff as well, arty or not.

  15. What a beautiful painting, and subject to paint. She's blushing, maybe from simply having herself painted I wonder? Thanks John.

While I don't want to own it, it is just about one of the best portraits I have ever seen.

  19. This portrait is beautiful. I didn't know that Wyeth's wife was handicapped or that they were married 69 years. Soulmates! We took our girls to the art museum yesterday and I was admiring a similar portrait entitled 'My daughter Elizabeth' by Frank Weston Benson. When artists paint their beloveds something extra shines forth...love.

    1. Just reading about Wyeth and discovered it was his neighbor, Christina who was handicapped by polio, not Betsy his wife.

  20. Shame Andy isn't still on the planet to paint a pic of you with all the dogs in bed.

I favoured NC Wyeth's paintings to those of his son or grandson, although i do like this portrait of Betsy very much.

  21. I don't know anything about Wyeth, but that's a beautiful painting. The Hurricane and I visited The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. We sat on a bench in front of a Frida and Kahlo and just stared at it for about 30 minutes. We had to leave so we could see Pollock and Warhol before the museum closed.

    Love,
    Janie

    2. I can't believe I wrote Frida and Kahlo instead of Frida Kahlo. I am an idiot. Someone from The Hurricane's prep school is moving to her area and will work at San Francisco MOMA. If you can return to SF, maybe I can work out a special visit to the museum for you.

  22. What a funny set-up with those folks whose bedroom he let himself into each morning to paint. Their Christmases seemed rather odd too. I loved his paintings of Helga.
