Nocturnal Activities

I have spent the day in bed
Back to work tonight.
I used to enjoy doing a run of nights in wintertime when I was a younger nurse
Bloody hell, I used to do seven consecutive shifts in a row, and slept all day every day between every one of them.
Natural sunlight was never seen.
Home was sleep and junk food.
Now I seldom do more than one night shift at a time, so a day in bed today felt indulgent and all a bit naughty.
It has also taken it's toll on my 51 year old face
Which now looks like a bag of spanners

  1. Just went to my underhouse workshop to put all my spanners in an old cloth bag once used for gym shoes. I must admit, it did look damned ugly! A bit like Frankie Howerd (BTW another Yorkshireman).

Did all the dogs pile in on top of you?

  3. Bloody hell, rather you than me. Like you, when I was younger I never seemed to mind. Now if I miss a night's sleep, I am grumpy for days. The other thing I have noticed is that when I was younger, I could sleep through an exploding atom bomb, now I wake up at four in the morning if a butterfly farts within a mile!

    It gets worse ;)

  8. I know how you feel. I'm 54 and work part time. I refuse to do more than three shifts in a row.

I'm doing a run of three nights over New Years for a friend who is going to Vegas for New Years Eve. She owes me!

Just accept that we could be hired as extras for the Walking Dead and not use makeup after we've worked night shift!

  9. A bag of what? You made that up. How much of you can you wrench. Not a bag of potatoes either; you left those at Weight Watchers.

No, he didn't. I looked it up. He's not flattering himself. :-)

  10. I hear you. Sleep deprivation is torture. One which I used to willingly inflict on myself. Now? No way, no how.

  11. John

It's hard to give in to getting old and not being able to do what you did back them.

  12. I really need my sleep the last few years (since hitting 50), or else. The "or else" includes feeling like death is not far away, and the look of the bag of spanners you mentioned. Neither one is pleasant!

  13. Really, I don't even know how you do one night shift. Staying up all night is something I have never been able to do.

  14. Hmm, I thought we were supposed to need less sleep as we got older. Not me! I can happily sleep for 10 or 11 hours, given the chance - but usually the bleddy phone wakes me. I hate phones!
Poor you, having arranged to work 3 nights. She definitely owes you - lots of drink?

  15. Pulling all-nighters used to be a breeze. Now, it takes a week to recover.

  16. Oh, our endurance and ability to work 24/7 is the stuff of legends. Now? I need a nap by 2pm.,

  18. Hahahahaha. Sorry, John. Couldn't help but laugh. We have noticed the same things, so I can commiserate with you.
Hope the night shift goes quickly. ♥

  19. Oh John you just can't say no can you ?

Repeat after me, " NO "

It's the cats who wake me up wanting in - out in again with mice & I get so cross. Then I look at them sleeping blissfully during the day & my heart melts.

  20. Those face creases that you find in the morning are taking longer and longer to unfold in my case..........a man can seem to get away with being a bit craggy..but a woman? life is very unforgiving sometimes...sigh.....

  21. Not a pretty picture in my mind at the moment, your poor old face, perhaps the thought of an illicit Scotch Egg would smooth out those furrows ;-)

  22. Thanks to Jaz for asking the question. Saved me looking it up. I once worked night shifts and split shifts ... about 100 years ago. I actually enjoyed it. Couldn't imagine working one single night now.

  23. I am utterly disappointed at the lack of supporting photographic evidence here!

  24. I ended up having to work on a project on Saturday, and rather than taking three hours, as i thought, it took nine. I ended up doing an all-nighter, which wasn't in my plan. My older cat, Phoebe, complained that i was up too late, and then complained that i was sleeping past her breakfast time. sigh.

I am 48 years old and working 24 hour shifts at the hospital. I do somewhat enjoy napping the next day and having my hubby cook me dinner. But it is exhausting. Not sure how long I can do this for.
