Bake Off Week 4

Howard...a nice guy even when  Deborah stole his custard
Its a bit of a non news day today.... am working night shift tonight....so apologies for those non Uk readers for a bit of a Uk TV based blog entry. The Great British Bake Off continued last night and I must admit the BBC has done it again , as a simple cookery programme is transformed into a soap in which you start to root for your favourite characters.
Top of my list must be Howard, a wry, sensitive Yorkshireman who cried when the cute and rather innovative Ali was voted off last night. He may not be as talented as the luminous Kimberly or student Ruby, but there is a niceness about him which is rather appealing.
" Nice" is perhaps a byword for Bake Off
Christine, the oldest member of the group is a sweetie, so is the rotund wisecracking teacher Glen who endeared himself to the audience by covering his eyes so dramatically when Mel and  Sue tried to help Howard save his filo pastry ring from its container. and it makes a nice change to be able to sit down with a cuppa to watch nice people, doing nice things in a nice programme.
Sometimes nice is just right.

  2. I wonder if Howard Street, Walkley and The Howard Hotel near the station were named after Howard. Niceness is good - that's one of the reason I like the quiz show "Pointless" with nice Alexander Armstrong and his wryly humorous sidekick Richard Osman. There's never any nastiness in this show.

  5. Hear, hear. There are too many people snarling at each other on the tele, I get fed up with it. I also love this programme.

  6. Howard is very sweet, I agree. Love luminous as an adjective for Kimberly. Ruby is beginning to slightly irritate me with her self conscious beauty and saucer eyes; I doubt her student accommodation is quite as squalid as Mary and Paul were making out. Sour grapes? Definitely!

Your cooking competition programmes must be much nice than our cut throat version where they all hate each other.

    1. The BBC TRIES to film ( or catch) the competitors watching each other in an effort to see if they can catch a sneer, but generally it does it work

  12. I agree about "nice".
The opposite is nasty and there's an awful lot of that about.
I haven't seen a single programme yet. The catching up will make dragging ourselves back to the UK tomorrow from our nice little house in France just about bearable.

  15. Being nice is underestimated.
I went to the doctor today, needed a blood test and instead of making an appointment for another day which could ahve proved tricky, I got whisked through to do it immediately because the nurse new was at reception because someone failed to turn up for their appointment. I thanked him profusely and he responded with an 'That's ok,it's nice to be nice.'
    Couldn't agree more.

Spot on! We've all become so cynically bored and "post" everything in our culture, that some bog-ordinary niceness is great to escape to.

  23. Love that programme! I hope we don't have to wait too long for it to come to NZ television, we're always way behind over here. I loved the 2012 series and I fondly remember the squirrel from 2011.

  24. Paul Hollywood was in a neighbouring town to me yesterday, he was being filmed tasting coffee at a nearby Costa Coffee Shop - my friend's husband had his pic taken with him. I won't mention what a cheating scumbag he is (PH not my friend's husband!) for dumping his wife and running off with some tart(pun intended). I like Mary,Mel and Sue though.

  25. It must be nice, even Lovely Hubby is captivated, and he hates cooking shows, hates reality TV anything and hates frilly frou frou (kitsch.)

  27. Yes, it is NICE to see something positive AND enetrtaining on the telly (as opposed to constant bad news that we're being fed and some really bad movies and reality shows...). Howard and Glen are my favourite! Such nice :) genuine and warm men!
    Pozdrawiam, Anula.
