World War Z

She may look worried...they are headed to Wales
From the get-go WORLD WAR Z  looked promising.
Seconds after we meet Brad Pitt, his surprisingly vapid and rather plain wife and their  two Hollywood kiddies, a galloping zombie hoard overwhelms the city of Boston ( well its stand in of Glasgow) in a tidal wave of the undead reminiscent of  chilling initial chase sequence in 28 Weeks Later.
Unfortunately things go all tits up after this, as this global " Walking Dead"  disaster movie doesn't really get off the ground., despite its 190 million dollar production costs, which is a bleeding shame, as some of the set pieces ( zombies running amok on a passenger plane ) are really quite good.

Pitt plays a UN trouble shooter who is given the remit to find a cure for the pandemic. He is smuggled into various " hotspots" around the world ( From New York, the Mid Atlantic, then Jerusalem via South Korea) in search for clues that may stop the infection and ends up bizarrely surviving a plane crash with a one armed female Israeli soldier in the middle of the Welsh Countryside!
( Chris was laughing hysterically at this point)

I was hoping that World War Z was going to be a big screen Walking Dead.
It isn't.
It is in fact a bloated, drama-less, and rather uninteresting CGI laden mess.
5/10
I had to eat a Marks & Spencer Scotch egg to cheer myself up.

  1. i think i will wait to see this at home when it finally arrives. i had a feeling it was not going to be too great with all the PR pitt has been out there doing. scotch eggs always make me happy!

  2. they say Pitt smokes a lot of weed....maybe this movie is the physical proof of that?

  3. ..... any excuse for a Scotch Egg :-)

  4. CGI over content...

  6. Is this Pitt fellow you mention related to William Pitt the Younger, allegedly the inventor of scotch eggs. Fortnum and Mason's claim that they invented the scotch egg as early as 1738 is a damnable lie!

  7. It's on my plan for Tues - BUT did you see it in 3D? If not d'you reckon that that format might increase the interest factor and depress the risibility? Or is it 'something' that just can't be polished? (Unfortunately, as scotch eggs aren't on my feelgood list, it'd have to be a fried egg sarnie or two.)

    1. 3D WAS NOT A GOOD IDEA...it blurs the image. Which makes the action sequences somewhat difficult to watch.
There are some interesting storylines and visuals......pity thewalking Dead producers didn't run with it

    2. Oh, this gets worse and worse, as the timing of a 3D showing suits me much better than the flat screening. Drat! If it wasn't for scrumptious Brad I might well have given up on it by now.

  8. I'm glad that I never wanted to see the movie, not my cup of tea. Seems I don't have missed very much.

  9. Whatever it takes to cheer yourself up!!

  10. Oh darn, I like the premise but it sounds dreary in the film itself. We like The Walking Dead, though I do close my eyes when it looks like too much gore.

  11. I remember when they were filming this in Glasgow. Scenes of Brad being overwhelmed with fawning fans were non-existent. No-one batted an eyelid! My son was at the Springsteen concert there the other night and The Boss dedicated a song to 'Shug' - well seen he was in Glesca!!Have a good week.x

  12. I'll give that a miss then. x

  13. The CGI that has been on the trailers, the zombies just engulfing everything lake waves is fabulous but I figure this is one of the movies where the trailers are the best part of the movie !
Might watch on netflix just for the special effects.

    cheers, parsnip

  16. I almost sent you a package this weekend. Two abandoned minks. I posted about them. Not sure if they were actual minks. You, of the wild, may know.

  17. Not my cup of tea all. Dearie me. No.
Though I might be persuaded to watch a zombie film if Alan Bennett wrote it and Thora Hird was in it....

  19. Hey, John, I have no updates on my last encounter but here is where I posted about Big Foot http://gailatthefarm.blogspot.com/2013/03/yeti-sasquatch-panther-or-tom-cat.html
Call it anything but we all have seen and heard it several times. I am waiting to catch him/her in the kitchen house and I'm nailing the door shut!

  20. Proof read! Chicken house instead of kitchen house. If Big Foot ends up in my kitchen, he can have it.

We have had a weekly removal of one chicken with no signs, no track or loose weathers. Makes you wonder...

  22. I'd sooner eat at The Scottish Restaurant than watch Brad Pitt in a war film.

  23. Does my beloved City of Yonkers feature in the film? Apparently, it was the site of a pivotal scene in the book.

  24. Here's a funny thing - a very dear friend of mine is one of those zombies on the plane...

  25. So much of this was re-made, I'm amazed it ever got out...still there's no stopping a zombie, not even a scotch egg!

  26. There was a funny review of the movie written by an Australian/Welshman in our weekend paper. "Of course the virus had to begin in Wales! Is this kind of discrimination fair to the Welsh?"
(I'm ad libbing - since started my fire with the copy ... but I did think of you.)

  27. It looked dire in the previews so thanks for confirming it. I recall well the streets of Glasgow being effectively shut down in the centre two years ago when it was filmed. There were masses of American cars and buses brought in - all very strange.

  28. I just saw a review from a film critic and he said he like it. I always seem to gravitate to films that the critics dislike. Seems like the films are more enjoyable when a critic gives it a thumbs down and the general public comments on it favorably.
I'll just watch it when Netflix gets around to having it, thanks for the heads up on this one.

  29. The book is quite good, which is why I'm incredibly hesitant to see the film. It appears to have very little to do with the book.

  30. That stinks, I was looking forward to it. Oh well, off to find a Scotch egg and drown me sorrows.

  31. Have you had a look at the walking dead comics/graphic novel;s yet? You should do - I enjoyed them a lot and they are sufficiently different plot wise from the TV show to give you some plot surprises.
