Bette was Right

well to paraphrase old Bette Davis in the movie THE LETTER
I am happy to shriek
"And I'm glad I tell you.....Glad....GLAD! G L A D!"

Of course I am talking about yesterday's vote by the house which finally backed, in principle, the concept of gay marriage .
Although I have no strong views on the subject per se, this 'final' stepping stone seems, well just logical to me. In a similar way that I think we should have female bishops, that single people should not be discriminated over the 'ideal norm' of couple-dom and that racism, ageism and the nanny state should be made unacceptable.
It's just the way it should be.
now do I want to don a white tux and stand by the alter of St Michaels clutching a posy of freesias while auntie Glad and the RFWF throw confetti.? No I jolly well do not! , but I support my right to be able to do it if I chose to.
(  now go back a minute.......me in white....think about it.....now that's a Larf!!)
Apart from a slight propensity for shopping at Waitrose, gay couples fuck up as much as straight  ones do,we are no different in the bumbling way we live our lives, and so, as Spock would say, it would seem logical that we should be afforded the same opportunities .
It's not rocket science.
Anyhow I was going to illustrate this blog entry by laying down some witty caption or video. now I couldn't find one on gay marriage..so I will have to be content to share this very funny and clever video with a gay theme......hope you enjoy it...I am full of cold this morning and feel like shite......
But it still made me laugh on this blustery and cold morning.....

  1. I too am jolly glad that a bunch of usually clueless Toffs finally managed to do the right thing. After my friends fabulous Goth wedding last year I vowed never to attend another 'normal wedding' again as I associate them with shrieking bimbo's in bad dresses that look like they should have an Andrex shoved up the skirt! At least now I have the chance of being invited to a few where the couple may dress with style.

  3. My only thought on the subject is that I can't imagine why anybody would want to go through such an important ceremony in an institution that doesn't support their beliefs.

And as a Christian, Chris will tell you that that the Bible isn't ambivalent on the question of homosexuality. The Good Book may say God is love - but it doesn't embrace the concept of same sex relationships.

    1. Why do you think I do Not go to church bel..or would want a church wedding for myself? To me , for the reason you are stating, it would not feel right......
My point in the blog entry is that I support the idea...in the sake of fairness.. The 'wider' issues are in great need of ironing

    2. I thoroughly agree with you. But the problem with religion - any religion - is that we can't pick and choose the bits we like best and ignore the rest.

Christianity is one of those clubs I have no desire to become a member of. But I guess Im not club sort of person.

As for you tripping down the aisle in white...over my dead body!!! But a nice grey might do the trick...

    3. There will never be gay marriages in church for many many years......
Civil marriages at least will give everyone a fair deal

    4. In New Zealand, you can already have a civil union, which is a slightly odd compromise I think as it is in ever respect a civil marriage except in name. But we have plenty of churches who will bless anyone's union if their heart is in it.
The Bible is a VERY old document, miraculously not needing to have been updated except in translation versions for 1300 years I believe? Amazing that. And so of course it is fraught with contextual issues, being written in a very different society. First principles all the way for me. God is love, three things count on this earth, faith hope and love, etc. Pillars of salt, burning bushes and stoning people I think we can take as interesting bits of Judaic (mythical) history.

I too totally support the idea of gay marriage as a point of fairness. I now just await the chance for heterosexual couples to be able to have a civil partnership instead of a marriage if they so wish. That will then complete the circle of fairness for all.

  6. I just hope the bill makes it through all the rest of the red tape and commons stuff before it gets to the Lords. Love the idea of you in white John....more Alec Guinness than Elvis obviously.

  7. YAY! I say. 'Bout bloody time. I have very liberal views on sexuality and sexual identity and this is a great step in the right direction. And if the Christian God is a god of love, then he should be right behind this. Let's not forget, 'the book' was written years (decades and in some case centuries) after the 'fact' and is as much a tool about control as it is about faith.

  8. I have to say that this gay marriage thing reminds me of when - a few years ago - a group of blind people got together to protest at how they were automatically excluded from appreciating paintings at art exhibitions. They lobbied to force all public exhibitions to have a strong tactile element to them, and that they be allowed to handle the paintings. I always thought that those exhibitions were called 'sculpture'.

Other than that, this is going to split the Anglican Church right down the middle (except in Africa, where it will be completely destroyed). For some reason, I don't think that anyone will care about lesbian priests any more than they care about women priests in general, and since the Catholic Church cares less about sexual orientation than it does about it's ministers being celibate, I think we are all going to be born again Catholics!

  11. According to a Gallup Poll, the majority of Americans are in favor of legalizing gay marriage. The rest are Republicans and nobody likes them.

  12. As an American, I am disgusted by the lack of compassion that certain religious and moral groups show to others. As a married 50+ woman who has never had (nor wanted to) give birth, it really makes my blood boil when someone else tries to tell me that the main and only reason for marriage is to produce offspring. Those that deny the rights of same-sex marriage would also like to give women like me no choice but to reproduce. I am gladdened when I see any form of government recognize that marriage should not be regulated or oriented to a faith-based or morally regulated philosophy. And just look at the Britney Spears and Kim Kardashians of the world to see how hetero couples screw up the institution. Really, if those two idiots were allowed to be married....

and btw.... I came here via Sue! But I had to post as this is an issue I feel is very important.

It's easy to confuse. The religious side of marriage with the legal side ( which I have done)
All that should be sorted is a fair deal for all

  13. and a Lesbian friend of mine in a civil partnership has just given birth. it's not rocket science.

I'm delighted by last night's vote but have no wish to repeat the mistakes of my own marriage nor to ape straight society. But it's the recognition that we too exist and are not aliens.
But I'm also delighted to see the tory party in its true colours, in spite of Dave's efforts to prove that they are progressive and enlightened.... They've lost the pink vote again, I'm afraid.

Having been married now for close on 39 years I often wonder what the attraction is..but if people want to get married they should be allowed to find out for themselves lol. Good for the house finally making it into the 21st century. Take care of that cold.

  17. When I see and hear some of those back bench (and nearer the front bench) Tories stand up and give their objections to Gay Marriage John, I know exactly why I could never vote conservative in a million years. Of course Gay couples should have exactly the same rights as everyone else - we don't live in the Middle Ages. Do we?

  18. I'm staying out of this as most of the arguments go way over my head...I had always assumed that 'marriage' was a religious ceremony, and therefore it would be a church that decides who they will or won't marry...but obviously I'm wrong...would love somebody explain it to me. My only real thought being that two people should have the right to be happy together whatever their sex

  20. Congratulations to our government for finally addressing an inequality. About bloody time - surely the issue is that marriage both civil and religious along with suffrage, freedom, justice should be available to all regardless of their race, religion, sexual orientation or gender.

Looking forward to pictures of your wedding breakfast of scotch eggs and chocolate macaroons ! :-)
